What's the most unique opening you've seen in an anime (IE: Uses an unconventional song or has a different visual style)

Cowboy Bebop is an obvious one as it's a mostly instrumental jazz op.

Elfen Lied with it's more opera inspired theme song

The opening to the japanese version of Fighting Foodons is just a slideshow of various food and not any actual footage.

The world god only knows season 2 is almost all English
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

#1 probably Cowboy Bebop. Has unique visuals and music, one of the best openers ever made and still sounds good today. Probably always will.

But apart from that, Mushi-shi had a very unique approach to an opening. The creator of the show said he wanted to make something "that people would wonder what it was" when the show came on. The second season kept this theme but the song Shiver is even better than the original season. Something similar is the opening of Hakumei & Mikochi that I watched more recently and both the opener and closer are brilliant and strangely heartbreaking.

I don't know about unique or what would be considered an unconventional song, but some I found to be visually interesting in particular:

Mononoke
Casshern Sins
Texhnolyze
Tokyo Ghoul √A

Maybe there are a few more, but I can't remember at the moment.

The second OP to Requiem for the Phantom is delightfully batshit insane.

Tsukuyomi's "Nekomimi Mode" will not be forgotten by anyone who sees it. (And the way it occasionally becomes "Tsukuyomi' Mode" is also noteworthy, though that's a trick a few anime use.

Monogatari's Mousou Express demolishing a previous OP stands out hugely.

Utena's second ED re-using the choral song Virtual Star Hasseigaku to a rapidly rising lift through those various stages is completely unlike anything else.

And then there are the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei credits.

the OP for the K-On movie might be the only usage of showtunes style music in anime. it's a super catchy song and so damn cute.

Rozen Maiden Traumend has my personal favorite visual presentation of any OP. I think it's cool as hell.

Also, not opening but FLCL's "Ride on Shooting Star" is really nice. And KareKano endings too. They were all filmed in the real world. I wish we had more endings and also openings like those.

I am working on a stack of this precisely.

Also, English openings aren't that unusual: Berserk (1997) and Serial Experiments Lain's openings are sung in English entirely.

If I were to choose the most unusual openings though, I'd say the ones that are mostly live action like the Kuchuu Buranko, Boogiepop Phantom and Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei openings.

MOKUSHI KUSHIMO SHIMOKU KUMOSHI MOSHIKU SHIKUMO.

Hanada Shounen-shi's opening and ending are by The Backstreet Boys.

The Sound of Music is based on a memoir called The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. This memoir was also made into an anime. The anime's opening is a number from The Sound of Music, performed in Japanese.

Magical Destroyers - This ones' kind of insane, and the visuals are nice on the eyes (for the most part)

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - This OP is also intense and also has interesting visuals

Aku no Hana - The OP and the ED are unlike any I've ever heard. The OP also has multiple versions that are sang from the prospective of the main cast.

Honey and Clover + Honey and Clover II - Two of my favorites, one uses food for its visuals, and the other uses an abstract statue of animals

Chainsaw Man - Intense, and uses references from movies, which I thought was pretty cool

JJBA part 1 + 2 - Great songs and great use of CGI

in terms of animation style, probably Hanhua Riji is what comes to mind recently. Not just the default animation style, but they also added jokes and gags to it in different episodes!

In terms of music, I guess those anime that used a western band for their music? Such as Great Pretenders using Freddie Mercury.

All of Naoki urasawa's works like monster, pluto and master keaton.
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

Some of the first ones which always stand out and stick out in my mind are ones which either are entirely instrumental with no signing or lyrics, or those which are mostly or entirely comprised of live action footage.

For entirely instrumental,

the Haibane Renmei OP:

or the Shadows House season 1 OP:

(This is the full version and not the TV version, as apparently the TV version which definitely used to be there for quite some time disappeared from YouTube, or at least easily search engine-accessible YouTube, at some point. Probably due to the usual stupid obnoxious copyright-related BS).

Also, the Hakumei to Mikochi OP for the first one which springs to mind for making use of live action imagery. It was almost entirely live action. Also never saw an available version of this on YouTube to provide to show others due to I'm sure more copyright nonsense.

Not an anime opening, but since I'm listening to the song, I'd like to mention "Paranoid Android" which was the ED song for "Ergo Proxy." I did not expect to hear a Radiohead song in an anime. When it comes to anime openings, I think you'd be hard pressed to find something like the opening of "Paranoia Agent."

Desert Punk takes the cake for sure. The only opening i've seen use only live action footage. I do wonder if they did it for the sake of saving budget or just for fun but seeing someone dressed up as the protagonist running around in an actual desert is just fun to watch. Not to mention the original english theme song to go with it.
