Damn, Alicia deserves better in this show.

Looks like Helck ran into some more trouble on the road and was fighting against time. A very tense episode as well and this does show how much he cares about his allies. Truly though, it's sad to see Alicia suffer. She was happy in one of the previous episodes and now this. Yikes.

Wow. It's heartbreaking for Alicia. Yet, even in her final moments, she manages to wear a smile.

Before the running Helck, there stood bounty hunters and soldiers. Helck defeated the large army one by one and continued steadfastly towards the royal capital. There, he witnessed the pitiful state of Alicia, who had been dragged to the execution grounds. Helck was enraged by the cruelty and ugliness of the people's actions, but Alicia, despite her injuries, gently cared for him. Soon, as if to celebrate their reunion, snow began to fall.

What a merciless world. They should never have conducted a public execution... It's no wonder Helck wore a constant smile at the start; I had no inkling of the weight he carried. I still find it hard to believe Alicia is gone, especially considering there was an awakened hero skilled with a bow, much like her. Perhaps Alicia has transformed into one of the winged soldiers. Yet, I've glimpsed a spark of hope.

Could it be that taking down the king will be the key to saving everyone? Maybe all is not lost after all?

Another heart breaking episode, despite Helck's best efforts to save Alicia he was too late to save her or the rest of his friends from the awakening. Now we know why Helck despises the humans so much that they turn their own kind into monsters.

Well, it was an incredibly sad episode.
Although it strangely gave me some hope that Helck might be able to save Alicia in the present day (here's hoping that smile plays a role later).

Looking at the preview for next week, it looks like some more hard moments for Helck might be coming, but we also may be finally back to present day?
I hope so at least.

Holy cow man, Helck sure has it rough! I'm suprised he can keep smiling still after all this trauma. Never mind the king, thats one nasty human, no wonder Helck went over to the demon realm to try out for demon lord competition!

You know, I appreciate the amount of time going into this backstory, it's very fleshed out and gives far meaning to Helck and his situation, than if they quickly ran through it all in an episode or two, but my god, that was far too emotionally forceful for my liking, didn't get the feels at all. It's like banging in a nail with a sledgehammer, it's too much.

Manga readers weren't wrong, this man really went through a lot. His brother was taken advantage of, had to kill himself to stop the evil plans but in the end, that didn't even matter so Helck watched his brother died for nothing, then his group of friends was hunted and killed? (I don't know about this part, I don't think they made It clear if they died or not) and then has to watch her friend (and possible girlfriend) turn into a mindless beast.
Pretty clear why this man wants to erase the human kingdom.

T-T they did it, they made me cry, watching Helck lose his friends one by one always saying goodbye with a smile and even if Helck managed to stop Alicia's excecution right on time and it was a beautiful reunion it was all for nothing, just like Rafaed said, as soon as he had hopes they all turned into despair. It was a long flashback but man, that final moment of Alicia and Helck made it so worth it : (

Unless they mess up at the end this is a 10/10 show. This season at least.

This kind of tragedy is almost One Piece level. This kind of suffering hits different. I didn't actually cry, so it not quite OP level, but it's damn close.
Imagine what would have happened if A-1 Pictures gave this story the big budget anime treatment?

It's been a while since I sympathized with a character on this level. People in the know are gonna start putting Helck with the big dawgs when it comes to amazing MC's.

Pretty much the "Joker's smile"

Where the Joker is smiling on the outside, but deep inside, he's sad and angry and wants revenge on the world.

Wait, that's exactly what Helck is.

Except, the Joka is the good guys this time and the "Batman" is the bad guy.

.

Also, as mentioned in an earlier episode, the "new world monsters" are actually by-products of Human experiments.

This means the entire thing since the start was all the "king's plan" where he orchestrated the entire "demons" attacking humans, in order to raise up Cless so he can turn everyone else into his minions. Since the "monster outbreak" didn't start to increase until Cless and Helck was "saved".

So yea, the Humans are 100% bad guys in here and I fully support the idea of having Helck becoming a top Demon King so he can wipe these Humans off.

.

Also, we're not sure if "taking down the king" will actually solve everything.

Causer remember, majority of the humans are now monsters and most likely unable to be reverted, since the "Awakening"s transformation isn't directly by the King, the King just has the power to control others. The Awakening power was always there, just that normal humans couldn't tap into the power, as said, when they do, they become monsters cause they can't handle the power.

And the people/ Helck's former friends will probably be perma dead if the King dies, since the King is literally the one that's "reviving" everyone, so everyone that gets revived by the king is only alive because of the king. So the assumption is that people that's revived by the King will also die with the King, meaning Helck won't be saving anyone anyways in the end.

Which would make Helck's "KILL ALL HUMANS" yell at episode one, TRUE.

The ending of the flashback was good but it doesn't make up for how long and drawn out the rest of it was. The first half of this episode was pretty bad too. Here's hoping the show bounces back now that we finally are getting back to the main plot after like three months of real world time

@Lightsrevenge
Yeah I had been wondering up this episode why Helck had been smiling through most of the series, damn.

So it's finally starting to all come together now with the awakened people resembling the winged heroes that were seen earlier on in the first few episodes. When Helck was fighting his way to the castle the masked guy he beat killed himself and said something about coming back stronger so at that point they were already aware of dying and being resurrected at a stronger level.

I seriously don't know why MAL lists this as 24 episodes long, since it is clearly written for 36 episodes. I mean we hit the 1/3rd mark at episode 13 and with this episode (and preview of next) we hit exactly the halfway mark.

Problems with pacing, direction etc. remain, though aren't as bad as they were in the beginning.

But I still HIGHLY recommend reading Manga. For years it was on top 10 lists of FINISHED Manga's. It's sad that it got such... mid (IDK how people exactly use this word, but I think it fits) adaptation.

And without spoiling - pacing problem might be worse during certain parts of confrontation with [REDACTED]. Because it is incredibly fast paced on purpose to make it barely understandable, so you get confused like characters are.

Given that this adaptation is almost verbatim adaptation of Manga, with only differing things being some original material that Anime adds to pad the runtime (why? it is already drawn out?), that will be a doozy. Like it was in this episode. Yes it was very emotional conversation between Alicia and Helck, but it could have been done in half the length and have the same impact. Or if you want to go slow - okay, but first have 36 episodes and second, pacing isn't just about how fast or slow things go. It's about the flow of scenes. And while Anime got better at it (in the beginning it was 3/10 when it came to pacing, now it's about 6/10, though this is partially because of source material), I am so mad that this legendary series didn't get an adaptation that it deserves. Something of the quality of "Sousou no Frieren" for example.

Ah yes, the age old trope of "this bad thing happens to everyone almost instantly. Except for this one single person that has to talk for twenty minutes in emotional exposition before succumbing because screw consistency". Helck is a good story with terrible execution, and the fact we've had a prequel series jammed into the middle of the actual series with zero progress on the actual story has made it a chore to watch each week, and it doesn't even look like we're done getting more backstory that could have been summarized in 2-3 dedicated episodes or several flashback scenes during the actual story.

@Malebranche Nonsense, you can't fit 30 chapters into a couple episodes. You're grasping at straws, it started with dunking on cheap budget values and when the story lifted off, you were forced to move on ever more niche and fastidious complaints. Give it a rest and realize you were the butt of Helck's best gag: don't judge a book by its cover.

Damn! Just like that, Helck is now all alone. All of his friends have either been killed or turned into monsters.
Animation hiccups aside, that backstory was fantastic. Though, I think it would be even better in a marathon style, watching the episodes back to back. Especially, with last week's episode and this week's episode. The break in between killed the momentum a bit. Though it was still solid.

I kind of hate to see this part of the story end, but it adds new depth and feeling to the main story that we didn't know existed prior. I'm interested to see how this shapes the rest of the journey.

@xdiesp The entire back story arc is a literal full on prequel series, and while the lore dump was nice in the beginning, it's become a chore. They stretched out character development, back story, history, full life resume, love interests, lack of love interests, hero journey, and everything else they can fit into what could have been covered with "My brother was the hero, I was a mercenary, my friends were dear to me, shit hit the fan, nobles were corrupt, my friends died/were awakened saving me, now I'm on a mission to avenge them and save what's left of the human kingdom."

The story of Helck w/ demon girl has been interesting. The anime was interesting. Until they decided to outright abandon the story they started with to go down memory lane for literally 1/3 of what has aired. 13-18, all lore dump backstory with absolutely zero progression of the actual plot. I had Helck rated 8/10 in my friend group from the outset, it was a fun show for tuesdays... Now I delay it until Wednesday because I rather start with the disappointment of infinite useless backstory that doesn't matter that Helck has become and go into shows that actually deliver on their characters.

Not where where you think I dunked on the cheap budget values or anything else (I've not made a single post on Helck until now). But go off.
