This anime is really surprising me, for a moment I thought about dropping it but now it has me hooked xd

The design of the spirits is good, it strikes me that they have different abilities (almost like a Pokémon but from hell).

It seems that Keitaro will have a new student, therefore; a new character; That's good, the dynamic of only the 3 of them was already beginning to be a bit tedious.

Now we just have to wait for next week's episode to see how the new character will be inserted.

yes actually most the places in Dark gathering specifically places with a letter replacing the name are based on real life locations. they had to change the names due to local superstition and so people don't actually visit these places because of the manga.

when faced down with supernatural beings that can kill you with a snap of their fingers you'd be crying in a corner. The only reason any of them survive is because yayoi has basically a life support system in the form of ghost dolls and as we've seen multiple times not even that's perfect.

anyone without such a defense would be dead in seconds. being afraid of such things is highly rational.

It's referring to the Sendagaya Tunnel. u/ARandomHololiveFan has been doing in depth posts about the locations and spirits on the r/DarkGathering subreddit.

To be fair, any sane person would be terrified seeing these ghosts. I get that it's annoying, but he isn't a coward anymore like the beginning of the series.

Eiko's got real charms by her own but she's just as crazy as cute and as crazy lol

All those jumpscares are completely unexpected fr, it's not as obvious as compared to those live action horror ones, and some horror animes.

That's how you do it girl, she didn't let go untill he actually said it. So there's our confirmation, they are dating. Really sweet. The spirit this time looked creepy but Yayoi still caught it. Also a new girl with special eyes?

Heh Eiko managed to press Keitaro pretty good putting him on spot to solidify things. Would have been annoying if it was all wishy washy so good on her.

Damn that ghost had a nasty face

New girl I assume also has some sort of supernatural ability or has come close to death like Yayoi.

This ep felt kind of meh not bad, it had creepy moments but felt like the ep was five minutes long.

I like it so far, the first episode was really creepy and set the tone. However, I am so sick of anime making everything so goofy/silly. It would be way better without the cartoony silliness and full send on the creepy and story.

They literally talked about the scenario beforehand. Is the MC dense or worryingly forgetful?

Honestly still surprises me that the room shit hasn't happened whilst he was locked in his room for years on end.

Feels like the reactions of Yayoi and Eiko are slow on the uptake too. He could've been dead for all they know. How did he even survive? Did the ghost need to assimilate him via an extremely long process first or something?

Nice episode(per usual). Now we're done with the "prologue", so we're getting out of the light stuff, things will become more intense from this point onwards.
so next ep will finally get to the main focus of the show or will it be a bunch of mini arcs instead of 1ep solving?
Multiple multi-episode story arcs, each with its own "boss fight," but all of them building towards the main goal of the series.

Eiko's love has 2 sides: the external lovey dovey side, and the yandere dark side. But the spirit that consumed Yayoi's mother, the Spectre of Death is one spirit hard to take down.

Keitaro's foot finally dived into the supernatural, the discovery of haunted places is gathering...together with Eiko and Yayoi. Though he doesn't want her to keep going to haunted places, he would risk his relationship with Eiko. One of the famous haunted spots where media has covered extensively: S Tunnel where a female spirit of imagery chases either car or human, which spooks Keitaro out. Of course, Eiko and Yayoi being the fearless ones, Keitaro starts feeling something holding his hand, which supura Yayoi to quickly capture it, though it makes its run.

Another night, and they try again, trying to bait the female spirit to Keitaro, and he starts seeing things. Same with Eiko and Yayoi, trying to hit the spirit to see whether it gets into the car, and her ploy works though scaring the couple momentarily. The ghost may have followed their car home, but it follows Keitaro all the way enough to possess him, which induces that the spirit that they captured as an illusion. And to do that, they need to gain access to Keitaro's house, and Yayoi steps in first to deal with business, the same spirit as with the temple incident, and she doesn't let the female spirit loose as she tried to kill Keitaro. This time, it's him who feels the amnesia, though the doll captured with the spirit wthin was shoved in front of him.

But damn, this spirit is cunning and tries to follow Keitaro, which Yayoi definitely cannot shun her alone. And a new student incoming...how would he deal with this one?

for once the ghost was actually creepy af. they stilla aren't able to get the atmosphere right which can make someone feel scared. they got the subtance for it they need to make it feel scary now. decent episode but kinda contradictory how kie couldn't even tell there was aghost beside him all that time with his senses nor was yaoi, i mean she surely would have been able to sense there were 2 ghosts in the car, right? is this what they call plot hole?

The end of an era. Thank you Wit, Mappa and Isayama.

The Keitaro cringing to death part was good; Eiko continues to be perfect. I really hope it doesn't turn out that she's somehow the villian, that she enticed the spirit to attack Yayoi's parents and somehow gave Yayoi her powers. That'd be too one-dimensional: People can be nuts without being archvillains, and having Eiko be some kind of evil mastermind of everything would suggest that people actually aren't able to be dark and messed up like Eiko is; it takes away human will and says only actual monsters are evil. If Eiko is indeed somehow responsible for killing Yayoi's parents, then Dark Gathering is a lot weaker than I was hoping. I'll continue to hope that Eiko isn't responsible, but it'd be nice to get some confirmation from the show itself.

The roadkill ghost lady actually managed to be creepy. I didn't find it scary at all, but that's to be expected for someone used to scary stuff; the part where it appears in the windshield was done particularly well. I kind of feel like Keitaro should have been dead though, given that it seemed like a lot of time passed between the ghost getting him and Yayoi rescuing him.

As for Keitaro being weak/whiny/whatever, I don't find this complaint very strong. What he is is both sensitive and introspective; it makes sense for him to doubt himself, and to be awkward about his relationship with Eiko. Everyone experiences the same kind of doubts, though whether or not they dwell on them and understand their weight is a different question. So sure, Keitaro has protagonist syndrome, but it's a pretty mild case, and the part about how the only people who know him are Eiko's friends was on-the-nose funny. He knows he's pathetic, but he forces himself to try. Don't hate on him for that.
All I'm going to say is that the later developments are going to pleasantly surprise you. Though at the rate this anime adapts manga, I'm not sure we will reach this point this season.

Yeah, I thought about posting a thread and asking that one question of people who've read the manga. Good to hear I'll be happy with it.

Meanwhile, have people noticed how buff Keitaro is? I think the humor is close to optimal: Flippancy is natural, and also keeps you sane; being silly like that makes the show truer to life. I also don't think it clashes much at all with the spooky aspects; horror doesn't have to be just scary and serious, and we shouldn't expect it to be like that. Further, I kind of expect their frivolity will come back to bite them later, like it did in Call of the Night, which rather deftly kept the inherent deadliness of vampires just below the surface until it wanted to bring it to the fore (and people made complaints about the show analogous to the criticisms here about the humor). So I thought Eiko's scheme in episode 4, in which she has Keitaro strip naked, was perfect—even the googly-eyed skull censor—as it managed to capture just about everything the show's been trying to do.
I love him who is ashamed when the dice fall in his favour and who then asks: Am I then a cheat? – for he wants to perish.

You are welcome! Yeah, it's great that Eiko has decisively no involvement with Kuubo.

I agree with your take about the humor. Series really needs levity to keep tension from overflowing constantly.

As for Keitaro being buff, dude constantly trains to keep his body more resistant to curses.

The second half of the episode really saved this episode for me. Good to see the spirits aren't all jobbers. I will say while I like the handling of Kei....they really gotta stop having say, "Yo, I'm here to help!" Just to then become a pussy and bail at the slight of trouble. Thankfully, if the manga readers are right things will finally be shaking up. I'm really hyped for this next episode. I also hope Kei isn't going to be live bait the character.

Then, how it tried to sneak out of the house through Kei's backpack and how it was shivering when it was caught. You know considering Eiko being yandere and obsessed with the supernatural, who wants to bet she got herself and Keitaro cursed on purpose? It gets her the ghostly experience she wanted and kind of ties them together in tragedy, and a yandere would take any ties she can get.

Poor s-tunnel ghost get caught, she only want to stay with Keitaro. I feel like getting caught by Yayoi is even more scarier than what the ghost did to human. Even though Yayoi did a little adorable moment while talking to Keitaro about his role this time, she's back at her savage mode again by telling the truth about him lmao. So, yeah, not really that impactful in terms of horror like some of the previous episode i got before. But i can see the plot moving forward to the more promising one, by the arrival of those one new character, which i hope bringing more thrill to my monitor. Let's see....
