This show loves revenge themes so we got another episode related to one of those. Obviously, it involved a supernatural entity again.

That child spirit was creepy as fuck though. Yayoi played her role really well again at least. She's exactly what Keitarou needed this episode.

Well, it appears that the spirits inhabiting the medium were a misleading diversion. Goodness, the tale of the child was genuinely scary.

The boy carrying a sketchbook near the Ancient Water Gate revealed himself as a malevolent entity spawned from lingering bitterness, a result of his tragic demise at the hands of his own mother. Keitaro and his companions successfully eradicated the root of the curse, calling upon the spirit of the Graduate Courtesan Otogiri, the Enchanting Soul Absorber.

Lmao, I love that they censored Yayoi saying mother fucker. Got a chuckle out of me ngl. f I recall correctly, I think that's exactly what she says in the manga too. Moreover, Eiko's unconventional experiments proved invaluable on this occasion. It appears her audacity in pursuing such ventures independently has its merits after all. I suppose among the graduates, she elicits sympathy akin to the soldier. However, unlike him, who refrains from actively harming others, she exudes malevolence akin to the priest. Then again, we haven't delved into the backstory of the priest graduate. His past self might have also been deserving of empathy.

I'm curious if Kurenai managed to survive and will appear as a ghost in the present, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

So the boy's spirit is a bit different compared to the previous ones because he somehow has a physical body, which allowed him to be damaged with the rock that Eiko threw, right? Yayoi thought she was a human at first in the previous episode.
Otogiri Oiran's backtory was definitely was the highlight of the episode. I got chills when she was laughing while melting. So good.

Btw I recommend you to listen to the Dark Gathering OST. I've been listening to it for some time and I think it's really good!
It's composed by Kohta Yamamoto, who made the OST for the final season(s) of AOT, and two other smaller composers.

EDIT: The rope was what damaged the boy, the rock adds weight to the hit. It's that one spirit's hair from way back, I remember now.

anyone notice that every Graduate kind of represent seven deadly sins?

the sergeant is wrath because its personality
the skull one is gluttony for just eating every ghost
dark priest is greed because anything hears his prayers are dead
the tunnel ghost is pride for battles
oiran is lust obviously
the child is envy just like his backstory
and lastly the slit neck girl is sloth like her attacks pattern just using thousand hands while herself just stay still

@Embient No, Eiko hit the ghost boy with a rock tied with a rope made from the hair of the S tunnel ghost. The hair of the S tunnel ghost can cause psychic damage.

The child spirit apparition holding meatballs of human remains, he's definitely one of the stronger S-rank spirits with his sketchbook curse. But not even their spirits can do anything about it unless they snatch it away from him, then it's imminent victory. But taking care of it is easier said than done, as both Yayoi and Keitarou are trapped within the confines of the spirit. Sure, Eiko has her secret weapon to help out, and that at the very least managed to spare Yayoi since the doll is taking the spirit's attacks. With Yayoi's taunting intimidation, the spirit evolves into a sentiment spirit without the sketchbook, which she then can release her Graduate: the Soul-Sucking Courtesan, Otogiri Oiran.

Apparently, this Graduate has been sitting in Yayoi's room stealing the other spirits, though when fighting against the evolved spirit, it's better than having the sketchbook as its attacks are much more predictable. Otogiri Oiran's curse, using the butterflies as her main form of attack, it's much more varied than the child spirit's meatballs, inflicting the same curse which she lived by, onto the spirit apparition with no mercy. As a backup, forcing Otogiri's 3rd curse from showing her ugliness, that from her history of being sold off to being a courtesan, she had quite the tragic life to salvage whatever that was left with her, from being accepted by her caretaker Kurenai, only to be completely blindsided by her. That's Otogiri's 3rd, and most fearsome power: The Burning Manse.

The child's rage vs. the woman's ruin, nothing can be creepier and more fearsome than this.

Long-distance protection. That's nice.

So Yayoi had to clean her room alone, with a mess of the same magnitude as the monk graduation mess.

Did any and all character development go down the drain? The lets ghost crew is doing fuck all, hopefully this won't be a recurring thing.

Great to see that jealously ugly bitch burn to death. She didn't even look better than her.

Backstabbingly evil.

Both spirits seem to be able to power-up infinitely so the crew might still be in danger.

@Limi The crew fought on their own for more than half the episode before Oiran came out with Eiko surviving thanks to preparations she made on her own. Plus Yayoi is still manipulating Oiran after she came out with the mirror.

“Come at me motherfucker” nah man Yayoi is absolutely one of the funniest characters I’ve ever seen. She’ll always have the funniest dialogue mixed with the most serious facial expressions love it. Weird that they censored it considering how dark this story is, but oh well

Wild episode. This is definitely one of the strongest spirits they’ve faced and one of the most dangerous situations. Really had them up against the wall until Yayoi unleashed Oiran. The kid spirit levelling up by eating his dad’s meatballs was genuinely disturbing. What a fucked up scenario.

Oiran’s backstory is really messed up as well. Being betrayed by someone you were so close to and then disfigured like that. Don’t blame her at all for getting her revenge.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Next episode we’re gonna see who’s hungrier for revenge. Gonna be an insane battle.

Very good episode! I enjoyed both back stories and they are both sad and crazy.. but why did the courtesan get the bumps? Was she poisoned too? Like it looked like he beat her up to disfigure her but what happened to her skin?

Man this watergate kid has given the gang a run for their money, I want to say more than previous ones but ever since we entered the 2nd half of the show each ghost has been really tough. Yayoi even got into some trouble this time and wouldn’t have made it without Keitaro and Eiko helping her, but I’m ngl I really loved her “come at me motherfucker” line lol, might be the first time she’s been this mad even if she doesn’t emote much.

And we also got the backstory of another graduate, this time being the one we got recently, Otogiri Oiran, and damn it’s a sad and messed up one, it’s cool that the backstories give context for why these ghosts have certain powers, and it definitely makes you root for them despite the fact that they’ve done fucked up things too lol, but at the moment this ghost is on our side so hell yeah, go crazy ghost lady!

Honestly for me personally this show has gotten a bit too supernatural for my liking. But I’m still decently enjoying it. I definitely preferred the first half a lot more though.

I don’t know why but I really don’t like yayoi. I find her kinda annoying with how she’s practically emotionless when it comes to anything supernatural.

Seeing Kei, eiko and Ai actually react to the supernatural is far more entertaining for me personally.

@JJT1407

Seargeant is Pride because as a warrior of the battle field, he’s confident in his abilities.
Otogiri is Envy due to wanting others to always be envious of her looks before the accident. Kurenai was also jealous/envious that there was someone more beautiful than her.
Tunnel ghost is Lust because he has a blood lust for killing others. He quotes. “I want to keep killing forever and forever.”
Meatball Boy is Gluttony because all he wants to is turn people into meatballs. An insatiable appetite
Taira is Wrath because if you attack him, he will come out on his own and show you his wrath. Don’t mess with him and he won’t mess with you.

The other two you got right.

The whole thing with the courtesan is confusing me. I mean, so the curse in the love hotel was not hers? If so, why did it go away when she was out of there and how she controlled it to keep Yayoi away? The secret room?
I really loved her animation and everything though, and all the graduate abilities are really scary, interested in how they will be put in battle.

Finally Anna be useful here. Yet Eiko needs to acts more fast and thinking more agile as how she showed some confusion to act and almost get caught off again with the boy trap.

That mf saying from Yayoi really caught me off guard lmao good kid good kid perfect time to show it now because she really looks so pissed off with those boy spirit doing.

All in all courtesan is here. The soul-sucking power. Why do i not suprise with that? She got some good backstory, yet with the third phase, seems like its gonna be hard to capture the boy with just the scorching flame. Idk what Yayoi do next honestly now, but surely i am super curious and can't wait for the next sunday already....

Incredible how this anime gets more and more exciting with each week. I feel so uneasy knowing that there are only 4 episodes left and a lot to happen yet. Probably to have a second season, at least I would wish for it. Super recommended.

The art style remind me a lot to 2013 animes, the music also feels kinda in those years and transport you back in a decade to an era of animes with good writting and a lot of cliffhanger endings.

I just watched Dark Gathering Episode 21, and let me tell you – what an episode! The background sound had this seriously creepy vibe, especially with that repeated "meatball" chant. It set the perfect horror tone that had me hooked from the start.

The little boy spirit? Yeah, that gave me some serious chills. The jumpscares were on point, and the suspense had me at the edge of my seat. But then, the show introduces the oiran, and wow, she's something else. Beautiful and with curses that add this whole new layer to the story.

The oiran's revenge was hands down the best part. It felt like justice served with a side of horror. I found myself oddly satisfied, and that doesn't happen often in horror shows.

What I really appreciate about Episode 21 is how it combines all these elements – the creepy sounds, the scary spirit, and the captivating oiran – into a perfect horror blend. It's not just about scares; it's about the whole experience. I'm already counting the days until the next one!

Honestly it's hard not to feel bad for these evil spirits. The solider who had to fight for his country only to feel immense guilt and being haunted even after death by those he fought, the kid being abused by his step mom and being killed by her and this woman being betrayed by a girl she mentored.
