He's hot, he's genberbent, so consider me sold lol! That's actually pretty hot and funny. Usually the cliche is some goddess or curse turns our MC female, that's the first outside of hentai that willed it man.

I absolutely love Pretty Cure franchise. :3

The Pretty Cure franchise is (obviously) aware of their male viewers and caters to them. A good example is the transformation sequences, colloquially referred to as the "money shot" by industry animators. Yay to everyone mentioning Cardcaptor Sakura... it is also my favorite Anime ever and I'm a full grown man.

Been enjoying plenty of the CGDCT stuff and these shows could appeal to everybody when done right.

I voted: Yes, but i am not a man.

However, the truth is that i only like Shoujo sometimes (there were plenty of Shoujo anime i actually despised) I tend to prefer Shounen more in general, though i will still watch any Shoujo that peaks my interest (And they are usually a safer bet for me, content wise in comparison to the other demographics...)

If we're talking anime, it probably doesn't help that the shoujo demographic has the least amount of actual anime with last year only having new 12 titles with less than half of them even being TV series. I'd be honestly surprised if most even saw any of them. This year is still pretty low as well but at least it seems we'll actually have some TV series. This just means even exposure than something like shounen adaptions which get pretty much double to triple the amount of adaptions.

As for me, I still enjoy the traditional romcom/romance shoujos like Fruits Basket. Shoujo isekai kinda boomed with its villainess isekai trope like Hamefura which I do enjoy but these feel less and less like a shoujo as I watch/read more of them and just feel like another isekai but with hot guys/reverse harems which I guess is enough for some to resemble a shoujo but it's not like there aren't non-shoujo isekais that do the same, sometimes intentionally to play with the trope. Then we have shows like Natsume Yuujinchou which you probably wouldn't even know was a shoujo unless you actually looked it up. I don't really care for 'shoujo' mahou shoujos. Not a fan of them despite hilariously having an audience of a young girls and adult men. I have tried a few in the past and usually end up dropping them really early. Magical girls that aren't specifically shoujo demographics I might try out and I can see a few people in this topic that can't seem to differentiate that mahou shoujo =/= shoujo demopgrahic.

Why does the transformation sequence cater to males, specifically, they're usually all pretty tame for the most part.

I read more shoujo than watch it because the adaptations always lack something, whenever I look at 3d kanojo I begin to cry, the manga is a romance masterpiece yet the anime is cringey and forced, anyways I watch shoujo whenever I can

I think it's interesting that shoujo anime/manga went from being made by grown men, for young girls to being made by grown women, for young girls, then back to the former (current state of magical girl show demographic).

As a grown man, I'm a fan of the genre, although that may be due to my exposure to it at a young age, library in town had almost exclusively shoujo manga, with just a few volumes of bleach, fma, stuff like that.
Currently watching cardcaptor sakura and just finished oniisama e the other week, was rereading rose of versailles the other day. Kaichou wa maid sama, fruits basket, my heavenly hockey club are among some of my favourites. I'm more partial to shoujo manga rather than anime.

I don't know, I feel like you have to be awfully sheltered to view most transformation sequences in a sexualized way, but maybe I'm reading that too literally. I also don't see why younger audiences wouldn't be interested in more than just the narrative function, a lot of the transformations are cool/cute looking, and any overtly sexual view toward the characters/transformations has to be at odds with the tone of these types of shows. Plus, is the argument really that some of the first transformation sequences in mahou shoujo's history were designed specifically with male viewers in mind? Anyway, I realize these aren't necessarily your thoughts, so thanks for the info.

No they mention that Pretty Cure is among the first magical girl franchises to acknowledge their male viewers. Also this article is specifically referring to Japanese viewership, which I would argue probably is a lot more sheltered, and definitely more hardcore when it comes to fandom.

I'm not aware of PreCure doing anything particularly special in their transformation sequences compared to the "norm", but admittedly I'm not a mahou shoujou expert. I assumed that the article was referring to Japanese males, but unless we're assuming the majority of males viewing these types of shows are lolicons, I can't really agree with the idea that these sequences are "sexualized" to any significant degree for the average male. Anyway, there's probably no point debating the nuances of this subject, I'm just skeptical of those claims.

Yes, sure. I see them as an experimental journey, with avant garde artistic choices; and some share colorful "art trips" in common. It is bright and dazing, but also mesmerizing and dark when it needs.

Shoujo is great, especially magical girl and idol stuff. Those kind really aren't that different from seinen anime tbh. They're about cute girls doing things. Slice of life shoujo romance I'm not as interested in, although I will watch/read it occasionally as well.

I seen a few shoujo and some of them are actually pretty good. One of my favorite shoujo is Skip Beats. Honestly, that show was a surprise and I didn't expect to like it so much. Would recommend along with Madoka Magica. I think what I like about shoujo for the most part is the female protagonist as their journey and character growth is very different in comparison to the male protagonist in a shonen anime. I think this type of reasoning is similar to the female and male protagonist in railgun and index respectively. Even though both their stories took place in the same world, the way they tell their story is completely different and unique from each other.

Shoujo has always had a big male fan base.

It can be wish-fulfillment for the male watcher to view themselves as the male love interest that the protagonist is super into.

The men in shoujo manga are way more interesting than the average male-oriented romance MC. They  have more shit going on in their lives, etc. since they are meant to be relatable to the average dweeby japanese male teen.

If it's something like Twilight of the dark master or X, sure. I like those. The world is still beautiful, if we're talking about something less dark, is another one I enjoyed. Though, last shoujo I watched was Bibliophile Princess and it was horrible. As for magical girls themed shows, well... I stay away from those.

Manga is pretty good, clamp's illustrations are top notch, as with everything else they make.

I've watched quite a few anime with family members lol. Madoka is good, not my favourite though, but mostly a matter of personal taste.
