What's worse? A story that's incredibly predictable from the beginning to end or a story with a Random, curveball with no buildup and no real payoff? (IE: A twist just to have a twist)

This isn't really "Strictly" with anime and also applies to other mediums.

So what's worse? A predictable, paint by the numbers story without anything too surprising and just follows the formula.

Or a story with 1 or more shocking swerves that you didn't see coming but ultimately had no payoff, no buildup, and was just pure randomly thrown in. A twist just for the sake of having a twist.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

I would pick the second option because predictable story can still be very enjoyable if it is executed well.

I'd rather have a twist that goes nowhere than a predictable story, at least the twist break the monotony even if it leads ultimately to nothing whereas a predictable story is boring from start to finish.

A predictable story because the execution is more important.

Sometimes, being predictable means that it's being well written.

The second option is worse, since a predictable story can still be decent and isn't complete bullshit like a random twist done for shock value.

Would I rather be slightly bored or infuriated? I choose the former.

Unpredictability isn't always a plus, but it isn't inherently worse than predictability either.

There's nothing wrong with a predictable show that hits all the right notes, while a bullshit twist can ruin everything up to that moment.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

for those of you who like random plot twists, I humbly recommend Ousama Ranking (3/10 - very bad).

honestly speaking, its all based on how its writen cos either can be done well or terribly based on how its written in the context of the plot

I think it depends on whether the twist is supposed to be significant and important to the story or not. If it is, then I believe the second option is worse than the first option. Story structures that follow tried and true formulas tend to be better than the stories with major plot twists that are completely random, serve no purpose, and lead to no change in outcome.

Both are bad.

If you make a "by the numbers" show/story where the viewer/reader can predict everything it's going to be boring and many will stop following it. And if you put some twists without buildup or payoff (aka: ass-pulls or deus-ex-machina) in your story it will ruin all investment one might have. Some twists can be worse than others but they always harm the experience. It is also not really that difficult to set your twists up properly (or at least it should not be), so there is never an excuse for such thing.

I would rather have a predictable story.

Plot twists that are completely random and out of place mostly anger me rather excite.

There could be well written plot twists that do make sense storywise. They are good.

Predictability doesn't necessarily mean that something can't be enjoyable. Whereas with the second option, if the twist is just there for a surprise and doesn't contribute anything to the plot, then the experience would just be the same as if it wasn't there at all (although a little confused XD).

I think you spelled attack on titan wrong. It's "attack on titan" not "huntrash x garbage".

nothing is worse than basic when it comes to media imo.

a 3 or 4/10 with a dumb twist that I will remember and talk about is way more interesting than a basic 5 or 6/10 show.

I take stuff like darling in the franxx over demon slayer every day, even though the former is a much worse show objectively.

I'd have to go with the latter. There's a reason why predictable stories are predictable. They were once good so everyone's doing it.

But a twist just for the sake of a twist to happen can never be good. At least not in my eyes.

Really depends on what the curveball twist in question is, as some are much more egregious than others. Usually though, I'd prefer a predictable story.

Plot twist: It stops being "good" if it doesn't make sense.

A predictable story can be fun with great characters and great action scenes. A lot of shonen fall under predictable but can be very enjoyable and entertaining.
what is dumb is a plot twist can comes out of no where and has no payoff. for example the twist in fireworks makes no sense

I'm a creature of habit, sudden changes to my routine are frowned upon. Contradictory though it is, I also strive for a fixed amount of variety in my life. When it comes to my entertainment, I think anime should make small changes, steadily and carefully, so we can avoid whiplash.

A series that tries to deviate by including a shocking swerve or twist but the buildup/payoff just isn't there.

I'd say a predictable show because predictable doesn't automatically mean bad. A twist with no payoff/build up feels like a waste of my time.
