Do you think it's unfair to rate an anime based on it's manga (or whatever source material) or do you think it's okay to be rated in relation to it's source material?

There are some anime in my list that I would absolutely rate much higher but there is one problem: the manga is just so much better and I can't ignore that fact and feel like it would be an insult to the source material that the anime didn't adapt it better, but at the same time I also feel like it's a bit unfair because every piece of art should be rated independently.

What do you think about this? Do you have some anime that you would've rated higher if you didn't know about it's source material?

The anime and the manga should be rated independently of each other.

If you're rating the anime you should rate it as an anime. Even if the manga was the second coming of Jesus, if the anime is an 8/10 there's no reason to give it a 6/10 just because it didn't live up to the source material.

I see no problem with that case.
The only dumb thing is fanboy who rated anime based on manga chapters which haven't adapted yet. Saw if quite often.

I think anime should be evaluated mostly based on the anime itself, so probably yes.

I don't rate or put most manga in the list and only read manga as extension of anime. So yeah my anime score is heavily influenced by manga.

Even if it was not the case, a unfinished products are hardly independent or rateable for me regardless. Next thing u know would be that it would be unfair if each panel/cut of anime is not independently rated because animators or episode director or who worked on it are different.

... Manga is Manga and anime is anime.. They are made by different people..
A Manga author isnt the director of the anime..
It's an unfair comparison

I rarely read manga but when I do and then watch the anime sometimes I do the opposite. I rate the anime higher than it is worth because having read its manga source made me get used to and in consequence more forgiving of its flaws if I liked the story in general, they not bother me as much as they would have done if I had met them in the anime the first time.

I like mystery genre so the enjoyment will always be lower after knowing the answer to the mystery. Battle oriented one too, since you'll know who's gonna win. Rating it independently is impossible since it's like acting you don't know who the culprit or who's gonna win, even tho you know it even before the adaptation is being made.

When the first episode of a hyped up show airs and everyone immediately gives the show a 10/10.

I'm on the side of rating the anime and manga independently, I don't really have a concrete explanation for it, doing the alternative just feels kinda weird

I always rate them independently even if I do compare the two.

I believe that they should be judged separately, they are different mediums after all.
one is print and the other is motion, a 1 to 1 comparison wouldn't entirely impartial.

adaptations should be faithful, and try to elevate the source material.
watered down rewrites always suck the fun out of everything.
pair that with plain censorship make it a badly drawn rushed product and it's impossible to enjoy.

Wouldn't you just rate an anime based on the anime and the manga based on the manga???
Obviously, If I've read X manga and then watched the anime, I'm gonna have preconceived opinions already but that doesn't mean the anime will turn out the same.

There are no such thing as unfair when it comes to rating an anime, but personally I don't do such thing myself, source such as manga/LN/VN have never been a factor to the anime score.

What it comes down to is; is the anime a faithful adaptation of the source material? Or do you only watch the anime and not read its source?
I seem to be in the minority here, but if an anime is a poor adaptation of it's source then it is fair to judge it harshly; because it isn't faithful to it.
For example, if an anime goes original with it's story (like Tokyo Ghoul 2nd season) then it is fair game to judge it poorly as a failed adaptation. If an anime butchers it's adaptation to the point it shouldn't even be considered an adaptation (Promised Neverland 2nd season) then, again, I see no issue basing your opinion on how poor of a job it did adapting it's source.
If you've read it's source before watching the anime then you have an idea of what the anime should be like and if it does justice to its source.

Using my two examples mentioned, I rated them poorly because of how bad of a job they did adapting from the source. Basically not even trying to adapt it. Also, because I had read their sources as well so my opinion was weighted of how bad they were compared to the manga. Would I have been as unfair to them if I only watched the anime? Maybe, maybe not. I don't read the source of everything I watch so I can understand the bias.

For me, it depends on whether I’ve read the source material or not.

If I’ve never read the source material, I’ll rate the anime independently as is.

If I’ve read the source material, I would rate the anime in relation to its original source material to a certain degree. I’ll rate based on how good the anime adaptation was to its source, as well as how good the anime is just as an anime, but I’ll give more weight to the latter. If I’ve read the source material, I would have a certain expectation in mind for what the anime will be like, so it is kind of inevitable that I’ll compare some parts of the anime to its original source.

As for fairness, I think rating an anime adaptation low can feel unfair sometimes depending on how you look at it. There are a lot of different factors, but I like to keep things simple whenever I can. The way that I see it, anime adaptations are always connected to their original source material, so I don’t think it would be too unfair to rate the anime lower if it’s bad and unfaithful.

You can't be really sure that you would have enjoyed the anime more if you hadn't read the manga, so just trust your feelings.

nothing could be more unfair than rating an anime based on it's manga or vice-versa.

If it's a single category, which includes the anime, it's sequels and it's source material, then sure

However if it's split in different categories:
TV, OVA, ONA, Movie and Special
Manga
Light novel
Then rate them all separately, because you yourself will experience the story in question differently, in each of these categories.

Should be scored independent of manga, definitely. Unless it carries a note ヘ( ̄ω ̄ヘ)

i think there are few exceptions where the anime is just better than the manga. for instance, sailor moon 90s series might actually be better than its crystal adaptation because crystal always had pacing issues, while 90's adaptation always had the monster of the week format to prevent really fast pacing. the 90s version showed instances where the sailor scouts got stronger and gave them more character moments within the group (definitely more moments than the manga).

i'm also aware that revolutionary girl utena is different from its source material, but no one calls it out because apparently they're good changes (haven't read the manga only heard about the differences).

Well, I'm watching Saint Seiya right now. And so far, I would have to say that I enjoyed the manga more in comparison to the anime. The anime just draws out adapting material from the manga that I think is more interesting than the filler. But the problem with the filler is that it's incorporated into the anime's story. So, while the anime does adapt material from the manga, the added content from the filler creates an entirely different story.

I don't think too much about it, I just give a number that is close to my mental state about the anime at that specific time
