Summertime Rendering
| Just started watching Summer Time Render. 5 minutes in, already 2 distasteful fanservice scenes. Including showing the underwear of a girl that looks like 14yo. Had to pause it and come here to check.... Is it going to be like that during the whole show? Update : Just finished watching the show. Started strong, was a good 8/10 until ep 11/12. Then it went downhill until the terrible last couple of episodes. What a letdown!! Still a 6/10 because the art is beautiful, got attached to the characters and the concept was great. But wow, what a waste. I had the wrong idea about the "fanservice" and the romances are actually pretty well done for once... Why do so many animes tend to go trippy and messy in the end? Conclusion of a story is so crucial, it's like mangakas don't know how to end a story properly... |

| Those two quality fanservice scenes are probably the only ones on entire show because they are significant to the plot and are brought up later on in the story. Not even joking. Later on you have something inconsequential, like shower scene, and Hizuru being hot all the time she has on screen. But besides that, there is very little to no ecchi. Btw, I'm not really into ad hominem, but you literally have Kill La Kill in favourites, so I have no idea how you could have a problem with this. |

| No, it doesn't get better. I also have Kill la Kill in my favorites, but there's no contradiction. Fanservice & ecchi only work in comedies (in the broader sense of the term, as the opposite of drama), since ecchi = playful erotic content. KLK has both comedy and drama elements. On the other hand, Summertime Render is a 100% serious mystery thriller story and that's why it's literally the only anime I've ever seen in which fanservice is detrimental. |

Kill La Kill takes place in a fantasy world with girls wearing "combat suits" that are quite revealing. I made an exception for this anime because of this context and the way it was handled. There is something absurd about it. It's not really sexual. Summer Time setting is more "realistic", as in it doesn't seem to have an absurdist tone . Then it starts with the death of a young girl. This is dramatic. The tone is set. And there is nothing absurd or funny about the fanservice I saw, it's just plain sexualizing of a school girl and non-consent touching of a woman. I honestly see a difference between this and the absurdism of KLK. Again, it's just my point of view. I think there is a difference between a nude body or a sexy outfit, and the good old sexualization of female characters. The two segments I was refering to occur literally in the first 5 minutes, which was even more unsettling and concerning to me about this show. I wouldn't have minded that much if it had been dilluted in later episodes in rare occurences. The story seems interesting, and the art style is beautiful, so I would be disappointed if I had to drop it, if it kept going like that every 5 minutes. Hence my question... The production staff of the anime knows that younger, horny teenagers are the majority of the viewers and that's why many modern shows sexualize their characters, especially in the early episodes. |
