Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin movie series is easily the best way from what little I have watched.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/10937/Mobile_Suit_Gundam__The_Origin?q=origin&cat=anime

Most of the time Gundam storylines are bit of a mess for a new watcher but that series is centered around only a few characters. It is kind of a back story arc to the original MS Gundam.

Much better animation than the old ones as well.

You can start of any Gundam titles including Turn A if you want.

Although my personal recommendation for first timers is either Gundam 00 or Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans.

Edit: If you want to "steer clear" of the old ones you're really missing out on a lot of good stuff. Stay filtered.

I personally don't like any 80s Gundam as much as L–Gaim, and there's no way most people will ever watch L–Gaim. So while I understand your love of old anime, I also understand his preference for newer anime. Turn A is old too, so it's not as if this guy is only watching seasonals.

I just feel it's really insipid to reject anime based on age. That's as if I chose to reject all anime made after the 2010s. And franky OG Gundam is a classic for a reason, it influenced the anime industry in ways few anime had.

I can quote myself:

alshu said:

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin (prequel to Universal Century, also kind of Code Geass but done right)
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (stand-alone from Universal Century)
Gundam Build Fighters (stand-alone from Universal Century, also more of a sport-hobby show, not a military action)

They recently developed a movie around episode 15...but for some reason in alternative timeline...and it doesn't suck...but is kind of uninteresting.

You can start with Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin since it tells the beginning of UC timeline before Gundam even exist plus it has great animation too. Or you can watch a standalone one titled Mobile Suit Gundam War in the Pocket since this one is really good compared to the original. Then you can start watching the original one.

Sorry, but you'll have to watch the "old ones" to get into Gundam, starting with the original 1979 series.

You have a Ranma 1/2 picture in your profile, and that didn't come out yesterday either. If you can watch Ranma 1/2, you can watch the original Gundam anime.

Watch the newest movies?
The Char Anazabelle movies are really good, and its basically a prequel to the original gundam series. So I think thats a good place to start.

Any of the Gundam titles that aren't in the Universal Century timeline like Turn A, Wing, or G, you should be okay watching them without prior knowledge of the franchise if you start from their first series.

Anything Universal Century, though? You will almost certainly need to start with the original 1979 anime as almost all the UC titles refer to characters and events that took place at varying points of the timeline that you'll be lost on without seeing the earlier installments of the continuity.

If you don't want to watch anything old, you don't deserve Gundam recs tbh. Just keep watching seasonals like the rest of the anti-old-anime people. If you want to get into classic franchises like Gundam you need to get over your prejudice first.
I probably regret this post by now.

I am new to anime so unlike like some of you who are watching anime for a really long time, I've only seen anime with good animations or like I watch anime because of their beautiful animations so it's kinda hard for me to watch something less attractive.

I'm confused by all the people recommending Gundam Origin. Do they not know it ends on a cliffhanger? And that one must sit through 1979 animation to see the ending (or read the manga)? Actually, Rijupalika, I recommend reading the Origin manga if you can find it. It is a self-contained retelling of the dated 1979 anime everyone is so desperate for you to watch.

Not really.
It simply says "And here the story of Gundan 0079 stars". There are no characters in immediate peril to call it cliffhanger.

Lucifrost said:

Ending of what?
To see what happens with Amouro and Char you need also to watch Gundam Zeta, Gundam ZZ (where they are background charters) and the CCA movie.

But this is only if you like the characters...what if you don't? The Origin is good fort testing the waters also explains what UC is about. After it for example you cane skip the TV series and go with OVAs like Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Unicorn...or maybe movies like the Thunderbolt ones.

I'm gonna guess because being one of the more recent UC Gundam installments, it's perceived as being more accessible to fans of more recent titles and allows one to get a sense if going through the other Gundam titles of Universal Century will be worth your time or not, since Origin explores the past of the franchise's famous antagonist, Char Aznable, before the events of the original 1979 Gundam series. From a certain perspective if you want to dip your toes without going through a few dozen episodes (as many of the Gundam TV anime are known to be fairly lengthy at around 50 episodes a pop), I could see where folks may want to dabble into Gundam: The Origin first before the older anime.

As for the older titles, Char and Amuro's story is covered with the original series, Zeta, ZZ, and Char's Counterattack.

But you still need to watch it to understand Char's Counterattack. (Also sadly ZZ is the last short appearance of Sayla).

The main UC line is the best of what Gundam has to offer tbh. Take the boomer pill. Maybe watch Sneed though. That's the best AU I've seen so far.

if you're not going to watch the older anime, which is the bulk of UC gundam, then it literally doesn't matter what you watch first, because you've already committed yourself to not watching it chronologically and not knowing wtf is going on. it's not gatekeeping, it's just the truth bro. you can't ask this paradoxical ass question, "how do i get into gundam if i dont want to watch 50% of gundam?" and expect a better answer than that.

if you have no interest in UC gundam at all, then there is no guide or watch order for the other series. they have nothing to do with one another. wing, seed, 00, IBO. just watch whatever you want.

as for Turn A, you don't need to watch anything else to understand it. you would probably have a somewhat different impression of it if you knew about the UC gundam setting and timeline though.

If you don't want to watch "old anime," you don't want to watch Gundam.

You can either have this ridiculous, arbitrary line you won't cross, or you can effectively understand and enjoy the franchise, but you can't have both at once.

And for the record, few people watch "old anime" because they've been watching anime for a long time, most do it because they have taste.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

Starting with the origin sounds like a terrible idea. It's a prequel, so it already expects some knowledge of the UC.

Just go with alternate universe series like Gundam 00 or IBO. Or even better: watch the "old" series.

Personally I started with Gundam 00 which is still my favourite Gundam and my second Gundam was Iron Blooded Orphans, both are great. Iron Blooded Orphans is completely stand alone though so that is probably the better one to start with, without prior knowledge the ending to Gundam 00 season 2 probably seem cheap.

A lot of people are saying start with Gundam the Origin and while I think that show is amazing I think it works a lot better after having seen the main character (Char) in other shows before going into his back story. I felt more of an impact after seeing him in the original 1979 Gundam and then seeing his back story in the origin.

Fyi 00 is overrated. Nearly everyone thought 00 sucked after season 1 particularly the movie. So much bandai stopped making mgs for 00 after season 1. Ibo also flopped hard and they basically cut the mg line. These only get good reviews because they have better animation than the 79, zeta, seed, wing.

I started by watching "Gundam 00" then "Gundam SEED". Then I watched "Iron Blooded Orphans", afterwards "Gundam Build Fighters". Finally I watched "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin" and "Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096".

These I think can be watched without any worry, in whatever order you like. Only "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin" is related to the GUNDAM lore. But this is my casual approach to GUNDAM, so it's up to you.

my cat just watch gundam seed and gundam seed destiny and call it a day.

if ya put a seed you get it indeed
if ya plant a cabbage then you would need a seed
if ya touch a cat don't squeeze out it's seed
shower me timbers watch turn a gundam that you seek
for the seed will make you shower in heat

see this line will always be blur
like your vision on this timeline will always gets bomb
but not to worry you don't have to slur
cause ten four dinosaur will get you cockscomb
