I dont watch that much dub anime anymore like I used when I started anime but I personally think that dub voice actors should like or watch anime. Reason’s for that would be if they didn’t they wouldn’t put the effort they shoul in order for people to enjoy what there watching also people who dont like anime and voicing it would probably change stuff that they shouldn’t .

Also don’t mention the Japanese vas cause that a whole different thing . Japanese vas dont need to enjoy anime for them to put an effort cause i am pretty sure if they dont give it their all in their voice acting they wouldn’t be hired .

Dub actors almost certainly care more for anime than Japanese VA's. In Japan, they are doing the voice acting as a career. Their main reason for doing it is $$$

In America, a lot of them arent doing it as a career. If you go through some shows you will see that a lot of English VAs dont do a ton of roles.

Interesting question.

Well, it certainly couldn't hurt. One of my main complaints with dubs is that the actors sound bored and devoid of passion. Maybe they're just reading lines with no clue about the context. Maybe they just don't care.

I'm pretty sure they do watch it, it'd be pretty weird if they just read lines without watching scenes for context.

Do you really assume that no English voice actors watch/like anime?

That's a bit of an overgeneralization. There are plenty of Japanese voice actors that audition to roles because they happen to be a fan of the source material that will be adapted.

People train to be Japanese VA, some even go to school for it. Its not really an inaccurate generalization to say that most japanese VA arent doing it because they "love to watch anime "

So your logic is that just because Japan treats voice acting more seriously than other places, it means nobody there does it out of passion and not purely out of profession? Have you ever considered the idea that people want to become voice actors BECAUSE they love anime?

I don't really think there's a single anime dub VA who doesn't really like anime, I mean I'm sure there's a few who are not that big into anime since most VAs also work on other projects like western cartoons or video games.

Generally yeah, actors should be invested in the stories they are portraying. They don't need to watch them to do a good job. Apparently Johnny Depp has never seen Pirates of the Caribbean for example.

dub voice actors can be picky about what series to sub or even hate participating altogether.

Eg in our case the actress that did the voice of Candy Candy, Sailor Moon and others, refused to participate in first Dragon ball because of the violence.

Similarly another actor that voiced mécha Anime said in an interview that he detested those type of Japanese shows with robots and violence. He preferred dubbing and promoting kids series, later being key member of a small dubbing studio. He also participated in power rangers and said the staff made his life hell about his love preferences

How did you came to the conclusion that they don't like anime? There was this meme on /a/ that claimed that all anime dub voice actors are failures who couldn't break into video ganes (where the good voice actors work) so they are stuck with anime but I don't know if there's any truth to that.

"Do you think dub voice actors should like anime and watch it"

I think that liking or disliking anime should be irrelevant to your work.

PS
Most of the english VAs I know off are canadians, so my bet is there are more hockey fans between them than anime fans.

The only thing they should be good at is voice acting. Unfortunately, 99% of them are not.

It definitely helps, I think. And it seems a lot of them already do.

I would say yes.
I think if you like a show, you're more likely to give it your all for the dub

If they do a good enough job, I don't really care. It's not my place to determine what they should and shouldn't like either. But it certainly wouldn't hurt if they liked anime too, which I'm sure is true for a few of them.

A lot of actors don't watch their own stuff, so I don't think they need to actually watch the anime they act in, but I do feel like they should like anime.

FYI some dub actors not only dub but also help out with the production in other ways. Colleen Clinkenbeard for example has served as ADR director for a bunch of things.
Avatar character is Gabriel from Gabriel DropOut.

A job is a job at the end of the day. You cannot expect all of them to care as much, but it doesn't mean they will do a bad job even if they are not as committed. As long as they put a good effort that is all that matters.
