When I was a teen, it was a big thing to say that anime is not just "cartoons". That is to say, it's not for children (due to blood, nudity, etcetera). So it's made for teenagers? What about people in their 30s and 40s?

i believe there are anime for everyone. its a form of entertainment in the end. everyone can enjoy it even if they are 15 or 40. it doesnt really matter to me and i wouldnt critisize someone who enjoys anime by their age

Some anime are aimed at certain demographics (e.g a lot of shounen anime is mainly targeted towards teenage boys) but that doesn't mean anyone outside those demographics can't enjoy them. And ofc there's also anime that is specifically aimed at older audiences. Look for seinen & josei anime if you want something like that.

I think a lot of them are made for teenagers, Shounen Jump magazine is target towards teenagers and so is most of the anime adaptations of those mangas. Most light novel are targeted towards teenagers and this is kinda obvious since only regular novels would be targeted toward adults. Overall I think that even though some of them have blood and violence I think the majority of seasonal anime that come out each season is targeted towards teenagers. Just looking at the first 16 shows of this season, I can't see any which would be targeted to adults over teenagers.

When I was a teenager, I was insecure about that kind of stuff, but I gradually stopped caring about it as I got older. It's exactly like any other medium, some are more family oriented, while others are more graphic, and adult oriented.

anime is made for all ages. the content itself determines what age group. for example, i dont think claymore, freezing, tokyo ghoul, devils line or other violent and gruesome shows with nudity and sexual suggestions are at all made for children. Just like books and movies and Tv shows can be made for children, adults and teens ...so can anime, hence the rating system . this isnt to say a 40 year old cant enjoy naruto or one peice which is aimed at mostly teenagers but there are definately alot of anime that a teenager should never watch

There are SOME animes for adults. Annoyingly few though... Also gore doesn't make anime adult, when I was in first grade kids used to watch Happy Tree Friends, to look edgy, which they confused with mature... What differentiates a real mature anime from something made for kids, is the emotional subtlety, and the life experience invoked in the show.

I think people should just enjoy whatever content appeals to them regardless of demographic. I think the mindset of something be "childish" is flawed since there are people out there who carry interests from their childhood into adulthood. Or who find pleasure in things that would typically be for kids. Mindsets like that are often times pushed by people who want to project a higher level of maturity than they actually have.

I'd say the brunt of anime is aimed at teenagers and young adults, with a sizeable minority of children's anime and a few outlier for older people. Of course that doesn't mean there's a time where you're too old for anime. Miss me with that Twitter garbage

Anime is for whoever the hell wants to watch it, just like animation as a whole. Even trying to push anime away from other animation in an attempt to prove its more mature is ultimately stupid. There are plenty of shows that shouldnt be seen by really young children, and plenty of adult jokes in shows that are mostly aimed at kids. Putting a cap on how old you can be to enjoy these shows is absurd. I mean, yeah, it might be weird for an adult to watch some Dora level preschool shit, but in the end, what does it really matter? I fully believe once you're no longer a kid, you should have free range to watch whatever the hell you want. Then again, I watched adultswim shows and ecchi and a few kinda gory anime before I probably should have, and I turned out relatively fine....I think...At the very least it taught me the difference between reality and fiction early. But its probably not a good idea to use myself as the baseline for what kids should watch...

Movies are for kids. Then you realize how ridiculous that sounds when you apply that to anything else like TV shows, anime, etc. I used to have someone tell me video games are for kids. But there's video games you can't even buy unless you have your parents permission or over 18 y/o.

Is watching cartoons taboo for adults? I like watching cartoons at my 31. There are even older guys who share my hobby. Should we feel ashamed or what? Nobody cares about age restrictions (shounen, seinen whatever), sex restrictions (shoujo, shounen, whatever) or sexuality restrictions (yaoi, yuri, whatever). You are free to like anything.

What about people in their 30s and 40s? To give you some context about animation in general, In the 70s you would find people in their 40s and 50s watching Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Anime basically stopped being a medium for just a general audience in the 70s when they started creating titles like "Devilman" and "Lupin the 3rd" back in 1972. My parents use to watch Anime when they use to visit Japan frequently as missionaries from Korea. My father told me that the fandom surrounding Anime was quite different and there is an obvious different attitude about the medium today than back then. Although both my parents consumed more Japanese films than anything else, both of them still watch Anime even today even if it's very selective and they are in their late 80s now. My parents would be considered Elitist if they were actually apart of the MAL community, because they think "almost" everything released after the 80s is shit. |

What has more is adaptation of manga/novel for the teen audience and little adaptation of manga/novel for the young adult audience. And answering the question would be yes and no, because it is something made for an audience of different ages, so at the same time it can be something for children like Doraemon, or it can be something for teenagers like Naruto and it can also be something for adults like Uchuu Kyoudai, so it's not something for just one audience.

But in this digital age, it's so easy for an underage kid to pretend they are over 18 and buy a game online. |

But I think I recall other M rated games requiring parent's permission. Back then we used to rent a lot of games and movies instead and I was into JRPGs most of the time. |

People who say that are annoying and reeks double standards. They’re probably the ones that say Western mature cartoons are for adults. The same ones who applaud you for being fans of western cartoons but will call you names if you watch an anime. Sure mature cartoons tend to air after 8:30pm BUT anime used to air way later than that for a reason.

I would say that it is for everybody, or to put it better, anyone can enjoy it. Of course, this doesn't mean that there aren't animes intended for certain audiences by design, but even so, I guess you can say there's enjoyment out of everything no matter the target. I do see myself watching Anime as an "adult" or at least society defines it, so there's that.
