It's not perfect and anyways I just look at it and think "ah, okay" and that's it.

Even if it's above 9 or below 6, my own experience hasn't got anything to do with the numbers other people have given it.

Pls don't write animeS or mangaS >.< // + <50 man(g/hw/hu)a not in MAL. // Join my >manga club< here!

I mean, no, but then nothing really matters. #nihilism

It's a decent way of getting a quick sense of what the consensus thinks about an anime. So it has some value, just not a ton.

Scores do matter. It doesn't mean that "high score = I'll like it", but that there's always a reason why some anime are rated high and others low. I try to understand these reasons, even if I may disagree. For example, good animation -> score up, whereas ecchi -> score down.

My taste is a completely different matter; I personally think that about 30% of the top 250 is good, which is satisfying because I won't find more than 30% of good anime in the lower ratings.

I think it affects what anime people pick up, but outside of that, no.
Kind of like how most gamers worship metacritic as scripture.

Same here, just kind of see how people rate and enjoy the series/season.

Kind of. If the rating is below 6 or above 8, it's a gigantic red flag.
To be fair, there are a couple good highly rated shows, and I think I only finished School days of the below 6 crowd, but you know...
Most of the shows worth watching are around 7.

Sometimes I use the mal rating to filter the show bcs i don't have much time to watch some shit. And the rating helped some anime gain more attention especially if it's your favorite anime. But yeah the rating system is biased. So, yes but no

It's crazy how much this question gets asked when we all know that mal ratings are the only thing that do matter in this life.
Everything else is secondary. Hold the ratings close to your heart and you will forever be enlightened.

Not at all, I've enjoyed a couple sub 6 rated shows and absolutely hated some 8+ rated shows. It all comes down to personal tastes and what you find enjoyable. I'll look at the rating, but I'm more interested in the synopsis as to whether or not I will watch something.

No, the global ratings are absurdly broken in favor of seasonal popular shounen and the same few "classics" peddled by anitubers.
Your own ratings are the only thing that matters.

If your series makes extreme amounts of money like the cards, concerts, gacha, the producers couldnt care less about mal scores. Look at azur lane, dolls frontline, yugioh, vanguard, love live.

If you are publisher trying to get a hit, mal scores do matter, especially for a newer series. Since the late 2010s it has been tougher for 7s to get future seasons, and 6s and below are general are danger sign that the show flopped out of the gate. There are a few exceptions where they went ahead with season anyways like for example a smaller publisher that has limited amount of hits.

Not really. They can give a general idea of the level of quality of a show, but then again we have AoT and other run of the mill shows in the top 50 so don't take all of them too seriously.

I think it depends on the person. For me, I couldn't care less. I mean, I use the 1-5 scale instead of the 1-10 scale, so it's not even the same thing for me.

It also doesn't matter to me because it doesn't tell me anything about whether I'll like the anime/manga. I would rather look at the synopsis, reviews, and tags to see what it's about.

I would say it helps to get a sense of how people think about an anime. And since we're talking about people, not you, it doesn't define how good it will be either.

I think they can help in the decision-making process for determining shows to watch. But whether or not a show is going to elicit the same enjoyment from you as everyone else is completely subjective. I know some people are of the mindset that you should just watch whatever because scores don't always reflect a person's experience. But I'm not going to waste my time watching something that's likely not going to appeal to me. It just is what it is. If scores really didn't matter, no one would rate anything at all. The only time they don't matter is when a show's average score is in opposition to a person's rating for it.

Not really, it only shows the general opinion of other people on a specific series, and is secretly a glorified popularity meter.
Who are you and why do you show your hostility towards a complete stranger whom you've not once spoken with before. Are you seriously asking to get blocked? Well, if that's what your intent is; to tempt me into throwing hands with someone as lowly and insignificant as you, then i may grant your wish provided you articulate yourself a bit better when trying to spite a person of my wavelength.

[Constellation humantwig, thinks that they matter in some way]

No they're not the be all end all, but they do help us gauge what the majority thinks is good, decent or bad in some way at least. So it does have it's merits, and of course it's based off of and average rating (i think) so someone thinking a 10/10 show is a 1 is fine cause it has to balance it out somehow.

No (30 character limit lmao)

In all seriousness, though, while MAL scores can be useful occasionally, they should be taken with several grains of salt. If something is rated 7.2-7.8 it's probably a pretty good show, if it's rated higher than that then there's a decent chance it's a really good show. How good something is depends a lot on your own opinion, though, so an action anime that's been given a mean score of 8.6 will likely be considered significantly worse than a slice of life anime rated 6.7 when judged by a fan of slice of life who hates action. The aspects of the action show that made it worth 8.6 to its viewers are irrelevant to that viewer, and its other merits weren't enough to make it enjoyable to them.

Anime rated extremely low, like under 6.0 on MAL, are rarely worth watching. Either they appeal to an extremely niche group of individuals, which you are most likely not a part of, or they had a target audience in mind and even that audience wasn't a fan of it.

No, just watch the anime you like.

Mal rating is more like current "trending" anime of all time. People have different tastes so you won't know unless you check it out for yourself.

According to my opinion NO, if you know me you would know that i like to watch many and i mean MANY ecchi anime and most of them having rating in 6 or even 5 but i never really cared bcz of some dumb peoples who don't like ecchi rate it as a 6 can't stop me from watching it infact i treat it as the more less the rating the better it is. You can see my list half of anime i have watched have ratings in 6 but caring about is not something i would do. So if you watch something which other "peoples" don't like watching then just prefer anime with low ratings they are usually better for you.

To an extent, it does because it gives an idea of what the majority likes, and in a way, how likely you'll like something.

Generally, it doesn't because people's opinions are shit.

To some people it does, but to me... not really. I don't base my opinions on what other people think of things. I like to form my own opinion and thus the MAL rating bears no importance to me. Though... if I series is rated under 6 then I won't watch it because if that many people hold a low opinion on it then there is probably a reason... but if it's rated 6+ I'll give it go if it appeals to me.

They matter because they have a big influence on the general perception of a show for a lot of people. Most people are gonna be more open to trying out something (or even just get exposed to it at all in the first place) if it's rated highly. Something with a 5 or below on MAL is not even gonna be found by most people unless they SPECIFICALLY search for it.

That said, your personal enjoyment doesn't have to follow the popular trend. I absolutely hated Gintama, Attack on Titan, Steins;Gate and so on, which are all the best anime ever according to MAL, while I absolutely adored some that are barely above 5. If you like something, good for you, regardless of whether others liked it too :)

The ratings fluctuate too much here sometimes and I dont think they are reliable when you have your own taste. A popular series will be 8.5 or 9+ but soon it will attract hate and the score eventually goes down.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

It's a decent way of knowing what's good or bad in the eyes of the majority because it's the most popular anime database, atleast it's better than hearing some rando's opinion who thinks their taste is better than everyone just because the so called "good anime" didn't satisfy them
