Technically amazing animes rated between 7.2 and 7.8, worth the risk?

Anime is one of the few remaining media where originality is still coming through, but there is something that i don't understand: What makes producers take the risk?

Because we see time and time again amazing animes with scores around 7.2/7.8...
Let me take the recent Sonny Boy for example, technically a joy for the eyes, worldbuilding/animations objectively 9+/10, it takes more of less the same effort to make an episode of "Made in Abyss" and one of "Sonny Boy", then why the risk?

Use the resources to adapt a 9+ scored manga and get better profit... Instead of animating something that you know is going over the heads of the mainstream population.

What do you think?

Things that are rated higher on MAL aren't actually always more successful in Japan. There's actually a lot of really low ranking anime that made a lot more money in Japan than plenty of the shows in the top 100 highest rated on MAL. Japanese people don't actually use MAL so it doesn't influence their decisions about what anime to watch.

Sazae-san is ranked #7971 on MAL.

In Japan it always one of the most popular, and beloved shows.

Anime producers don't take the scores on an English speaking website in consideration when deciding what manga to adapt. How well the manga does commercially is much more important. Not to mention just because something has a low score on here doesn't necessarily mean it's unpopular in Japan (aka the primary target audience of anime).

Also just because a manga has a high score doesn't mean it'll translate well into anime. Just take a look at Berserk.

You know guys, you may be right, I need to visit Japan to understand for myself how really different things are, because i would generally guess that the median score in japan is the median score for us as well, with exceptions of course.

As long as a studio has a good enough budget experimental anime can end up being a really good investment. NGE was a pretty big risk at the time, and look how well it turned out.
Besides, there will always be niche audiences for everything, so good enough advertising can guarantee success for almost any series, either globally or just in Japan.

Yes, Evangelion is in a similar spot, i guess japan is something else... half the top-rated reviews on evangelion are 5/10 and the other half 10/10...

Guys, i get it, Japan doesnt use MAL, but i would still guess the median score is more or less the same, sure there are exceptions, but 9 times out of 10 a good anime for the west is a good anime in Japan as well

What are these scores though? There is plenty of great anime that don't sell, and plenty of "bad" anime that do.

Either way, they don't know how an anime is going to perform before they make it. How good or popular the manga is, isn't always that important. There are many manga that are niche, only for the anime to come out and make it really popular.
How many people knew about Kimetsu no Yaiba, for example, before the anime? The manga had already been going for 3 years, but I never heard any body talking about it until the anime. People don't know what the next big hit is going to be.

Another thing to consider, many times, the anime is made to increase the popularity of the source material, not to sell well on it's own. Whenever they make an anime of a gacha game you never heard of, for example, they are doing it to increase the popularity of the gacha game, not to sell anime. It is basically just a big advertisement.

- No one outside MAL really cares for MAL scores. Not even people who use it take it seriously all the time.
- Japan likes to do multimedia projects: manga - anime - merchandise - games. If the potential for these extra products is low, the chance of an adaptation is low. Cute sellable characters and expanding franchises > brilliant one-time-only story.

That being said, a studio will take the risk if they are positive they will get a good return for their investment. It will either make a good profit by itself with cinema screenings, Blu-Ray sales and streaming licensing, or they plan to make money by licensing the brand to put on someone else's products.

Also, how is anime such an original media when most of it is manga or LN adaptations?

In such case they will look at popularity before rating and even then they will prioritize the Asian market over the West.

I think even minority populations are relatively huge.
So someone might as well cater to them to get the money that is there.
Obviously thats the more realistic or cynical outlook on it.
The more positive outlook on the same idea is that there are always people who are going to want to make artsier projects as well as people who want to see them

The only consensus the anime community managed to come to is that the taste of everyone else is trash. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Like why is this so highly rated?
I drop lots of shows for all sorts of reasons, so my low ratings are usually pretty uninformed, but that I actually finished, and a score of 3 still feels generous.

The only nice thing I can tell about MAL scores is that there is a positive correlation between the shows I liked, and the ones that have high ratings, as long as I introduce a huge sampling bias by not watching anything I know I wouldn't like.

One of the biggest example is Kochikame one of the best comedy anime and also top 5 best selling manga of all time but it doesn't even have a fansub or fantranslate

1. Sales being more important than ratings on some random anime website.
2. Even if ratings mattered, they aren't easy to predict.

I think so, 7 is a pretty safe rating. There's not much to worry about. Many hidden gems i've seen have been in the 7's.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

western tastes are a lot more diverse than eastern tastes which is depicted in the ranking system on MAL which is inconsistent with the top anime in Japan. This is probably one big factor producers look for when adapting a series - the ability to affect a wider international audience vs a local audience.

Mal is the opinion of a very small amount of weebs that hardly reflects the actual popularity or success of a series.

Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon are basically non-existent on mal but are literally the biggest franchises of all time, not just anime. Pokemon is dubbed tons of languages and shown globally, and has grossed literally hundreds of billions of dollars.

99% of the people who watch anime aren't anime fans they are just watching a TV show. The 1% who call themselves anime fans are found here.
