Well what the hell was the bubblegum and the headphones???...that was too unrealistic....its and olden days type setting , that too the bubble gum was pink....!!
Well the male character is highly unlikable , he looks macho and hes just plain wierd . thought this would be humour orientated but the killing surprised me , glad theres murder because only humour would just be plain bad...and the girl singing infront of the beheaded heads was disturbing....
What the hell is up with the talking boar??I guess the main dude witnessed someones muder under sakura tree...bascially someone whom he cared abt...
Bascially loved yozos story better though shouldnt be judging by the 1st part but Yozos story was realistic, I loved the 1st arc,but this one is sortof not likable....serioulsy the bubblegums bothering and most probably was that an ipod:P?????

One word: COMEDY. It's as simple as that, it's for comedic purposes, and I wonder why people makes a big fuss about that when they already knew anime can or always be unrealistic. I even saw analytical research in this board concerning why the bubble gum is there LOL Overthinking much? That or maybe I myself am simple whenever it needs to be...

Nana fan??!!! , a Josei, relating music carriers , love , completely sane non- killer characters ,involving good looking men like takumi and Ren who are not steroidish macho , in cities with cars and huge hotels...
So how does being a nana fan help to judge this anime, exactly how???.......sry if i sound mean, but your comment is puzzling....sry agn if u think i am trying to make fun of u...^__^

No, Nana as in the Nana V.A-ing the pretty gal, the singer one whom I even bother to remember her name because of her singing for WA and her
comment regarding that show. but your question does hold some value and I will ask you this: Can you explain why Endless Eight DVD can sell or why any RPG as long as it carries the name of Final Fucktasy can friggin' sell? No? Well, you already answered your own question, congratz!!! ;)

Used the word realistic because its based on a novel , there are specific things which if superimposed looks completely crap,i get comedy is fine but the chewing gum thing really doesnt match, dont know why is the damn chewing gum bothering me so much. I am just trying to compare no longer human with this , hence its irritating me..and am already in an irritated mood..

I thought I had downloaded the wrong show for a while, there. Awesome is what it was, anyway. The out-of-place comedy just added to the weird, scary atmosphere. Great episode.

Sorta looks like Bleach now.

Anyways, that bitch is fucking ridiculous. Basically she knows she has that guy in the palm of her hands. Killing off all his ex wives for her...x_X Some shit's gonna go down really soon.

This episode was outrageously disappointing in my opinion.

Obviously, the art director is Tite Kubo, who I don't particularly like. Maybe you do. I don't. The Carbon-Copy Bleach jokes just made it worse. When the main character walked on screen with earbuds chewing bubble gum with a hood over his head I facepalmed so hard I think I hurt the back of my head. The talking boar was unnecessary, as was the power-up at the beginning of the episode - why did we need that? From the first four episodes seriousness this was a complete contrast for the worst. Even the murder scene was sloppy. I agree it was disturbing, but, the character change from "I'm a nice guy" to bloody murder was terrible. Hopefully they build on why this man has a psychological breakdown that makes him kill six women, and then completely disregard it as nothing just because a woman he met told him to. I understand this is adapted from a novel, but I think the adaption could have been much better. No Longer Human was a great arc full of wonderment while this seems rather sloppily done with a lot of screaming and unnecessary "comedy". Haha.

I'd like to give a shout out to backgrounds though. The animation was beautiful and really caught my eye. The sakura petals falling was amazing and when I first started the episode I had so much hope for the plot. Overall, the quality was also really high (I was watching 720p, and it looked far greater than even that).

Of course I'll finish this but I sure hope the other arcs are more up-to-standards than this one.

Also please don't flame me incessantly just because I didn't enjoy this episode.

The last arc was creepy yet I really LOVED it.
As for this...I'll review after the arc ends or I get to watch the next ep (& like it) so far I guess it's not bad...I guess I was just not ready.
Since I just marathon'd episodes 2 to 4.
I can't wait for the next ep then.

All the comedy was unnecessary. :'<
& it doesn't help that Nana Mizuki's in this...the main lead's VA doesn't suit the char either...^^;;
Not that I don't like them. Nana Mizuki's OK, it's just that I'm tired of hearing her voice. O,o (Hinata is OK...& I love her as Misaki in DtB)

lol wat?

at the beginning i was really turned off by the art and the main character's voice actor but i got over that soon enough and instead laughed at the comedy in this. lmao at Shigemaru slapping that guy silly, the ex who spoke engrish, the iPod, and slaughter music video! hilarious!

I think he's being possessed by his new wife and that she's some sort of sakura demon in disguise.

Comedy? In my Aoi Bungaku? No way. Especially not the unfunny kind. :-|

His seiyuu is terrible, and he's a complete piece of trash for killing those women only because that waifu-wannabe bitch told him to.
And what's up with the talking boar, and the MP3 & bubblegum combo? That's just retarded.

The art, animation, and scenery were beautiful, but that's all.

Kubo sure has a thing for big swords, btw.

For a while I've been looking forward for this anime purely because of this arc/story. In fact I haven't even watched the first four episodes yet.

I actually read "In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom" from a book my prof put together (listed in the references - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ango_Sakaguchi) a while back and I loved it. It was a lot of fun to read and it was just soooo creepy.

Due to that reason, the first 5-10 mins of this episode really turned me off with the random humour. It was amusing and I did smile and laugh at a couple of times but I was overall not pleased with the unnecessary humour. Really disappointed guys.

The episode had it's moments though. I liked the scene in which Shigemaru met Shoko for the first time; was relieved that they kept the whole carrying Shoko on Shigemaru's back part; and the slaughtering of the wives. The cherry blossom scenes were okay, but I've seen better.

The singing was just so random although it did give a sort of eery effect. Kinda disappointed that they went all harem like with the wives. Especially the last wife (the one who wasn't killed), she's supposed to be ugly - not a short, attempted to be cute looking loli with glasses. Which makes me wonder were in the world did she get glasses - I swear they did not have glasses back then.

Anyways it was an okay episode, I was hoping for an animation like quality and atmosphere like in Mouryou no Hako....but obviously we did not get that. Hopefully it will improve in later episodes - I know I'll sit through this whole arc no matter what since I waited so long for it. If anyone is planning to read "In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom", I suggest to you to watch it after watching the anime hahahaa..

Edit: I just read through some comments and I missed a few bunch of yucky stuff too - I totally forgot about that random talking boar. And did I miss something here? Shigemaru had ipod earbuds? This episode is filled with so many historical inconsistencies!! - and this is coming from a person who lacks knowledge in history. This is really insulting to Sakaguchi Ango...if he was alive to see this, I swear he'll have a heart attack.

Um.... what?

So yes, the slaughtering scene was interesting, bloody, and twisted. But other than that, I'm not really sure what to make of it. What is this about? Some wuss who follows this creepy woman's orders? Also, the comedy is highly unnecessary in some parts.

Okay creepy sakura is pretty god damn creepy xD
Also quite a strange op, or well.. wat.. is that even an op?
Oh well at least creepy effin' shit is creepy effin' shit.

Wait wat, mp3-player, bubble-gum and a hoodie, followed by some slaughter, and suddenly the guy's got a wife lol xD
Although that's apparantly not a wife that's handled with ease xD..
Quite demanding, she is, eh?

Hoo boy, I was thinking this seemed rather comical at first, but heck this is creepy shit xD
Soon we'll see how this continues : >

Well that was unexpectedly different from No Longer Human. The comedy was unnesseccary, but I liked the rest a lot. The main character in this arc has the same seiyuu as Oba Yozo - didn't think it fit at first but I got used to it. I loved the scene where he killed his wives.

Visuals were great.

Oh yeah.. Do subbers really need to translate insert songs? I mean, who wants to see romaji, kanji and english covering half the screen in the middle of an episode?! I'm okay with the OP & ED but insert songs are too much. :E

Combining comedy with slaughter is rather interesting, but in this episode it didn't feel quite right. Why insert chibis, talking boars and few minutes later switch to mature themes? Well the art was better in no longer human, but it's still much better than some other recent anime.

At least there's some action, it's a bit boring to watch when nothing really happens.
no longer human deserves at least 9/10, despite the lack of events. It's too early to rate this arc.

I'm glad they decided to pull the rug out from the audience a little. It shows that the studio is willing to give each story its own personality. I think it would be detrimental to have every story be like No Longer Human.

Besides that, I'm on the fence on this one. There were parts that I enjoyed, and parts that fell pretty flat for me. I'm still sticking with it, though.

Creepy insane beautiful princess > loli > mountain whores

The animation tone drastically change but still keeps the mystery atmosphere. If I was about to watch this whole12 episodes of depression and sorrow like the first 4, I would have a severe stomachache before get the series ends.

Anyway, the characters in this episode are likable, especially Shigeru. I just like mountain man.

Oh what the fuck happened? So this is like an arc by arc series, I see. So we're done with the first arc and a second one comes in, whichis totally different and has nothing to do with the previous one.

Okay so at first I thought it was going to be a comedy series. We get an hilarious mountain bandit at first but then suddenly turned into a dark type after he met that mysterious beautiful girl. I gotta admit that girl was hot. Heck, she's the perfect match for that handsome guy Yozo in the previous arc, lol.

Good thing he didn't kill the girl with the glasses. She was mad cute, although I would assume that the new and pretty girl sure was controlling the bandit around. She's like in charge of everything. Aaah, and what's so special about this cherry tree?!

Not sure what to make of this. I thought the Ipod scene was incredibly out of place, because I assume this story is supposed to take place in the early 1900's and as we all know Ipods didn't exist then. On the other hand Akiko singing a rather cute and innocent song while Shigemaru commits deeds that are far from cute and innocent in the background? Wow

The engrish was gold in this episode. "Cock is most favorite food in my life!" Especially since the japanese translations didn't match up, makes me wonder if they be trollin'.

Also, while all the girls were probably thinking "not the face, not the face," I was thinking "not the loli! not the loli!" It worked.

This was quite... macabre, wasn't it? Nevertheless I have to say that I enjoyed this episode a lot. Overall it reminded me of those modern plays with an historic setting which combine humorous parts with more serious or even brutal parts, a combination which can often be found in old tales.

I'm trying to figure out what is and is not a part of the original novel. I'm guessing most of the "comedic" elements weren't a part of it, but not knowing the novel, or the original author's style, I cannot be sure.
If it was all inserted though, I must say I think Kubo has some really poor taste in his writing/story creation. The comedy was only barely funny, and if it wasn't in the original work, it has no place being in this either. Trying to force comedy where it doesn't belong just cause you like it is quite unprofessional.

Aside from the comedy stuff, it seemed pretty good.
I'm a fan of extreme gore and bloodshed, but I thought the singing part where he killed the women was well done in a good artistic way.
Need to see how this story progresses.

"What's in the bag?!"

This was certainly weird, and very very different from our first story for Aoi Bungaku.

But I'm curious about the message of this story. It seems like a pretty basic tale, but the way it's being presented... It makes me wonder if the anachronisms are being used to draw comparisons between our modern age and this medieval era.
