Personally, I can't choose between Tohru, Kyo, Yuki, and Momiji. So what's your opinion about this? If your choice is not in the options, just state it. I want to read your comments.

Yuki has experienced the most profound emotional growth through the end of season 2. At the beginning of the series, Yuki acted composed but deep down he was struggling greatly

I personally think kyo but also yuki close second they both have such hard history and the fact that they both despise eachother but at the same time want everything the other person has is just mind blowing to me. They put all their differences aside just for Tohru because they both love her so much in their own way. And the change in kyo attitude after telling Tohru how he feels was so beautiful to me. But also Rin if not them 2 she was such a great character and went through hell for Haru everything she did was for him not matter how much it destroyed her

Akito for me, hands up!! I really like her character and her madness from the start.

I think Akito is one of the most complex of the characters in the series. She undergoes the most dramatic change, and the fact that most of the audience still feels some sympathy or can even empathize with her despite what she’s done is what makes me consider her the best written.

I agree.

And Yuki would probably be my second choice. One thing I think is really cool with his character is how the author made him look and act a bit like Akito as his outward facade, even though she's a source of fear and pain to him. She was the dominant influence in his life for several years and it seems like he adopted some of her expressions and mannerisms as a way to protect himself, like when he's mad at Kyo he acts and looks more like Akito than he does in any other context. He can do these really intimidating 'cool'/ cold facial expressions even though that's not who is is inside at all. I honestly think he picked it up from Akito as a kid. Little details like that are what make this series SO good. Because Akito was the powerful one in their relationship so Yuki acts like her when he needs to feel powerful.

Yuki and Rin are very well written and have great character development. As much as I still don't like Akito she is probably the best written character in the series.

shigure is easily the most complex character in the show, for me atleast he starts of as a pervy middle aged dude with hints of grey in s1 but later on(especially in s3) you realise that he is kinda fucked up too,and his way of showing affection is very interesting to say the least, also yuki has the best character growth/development in the show so i would say these both are the best written but i voted yuki cause i like him a bit more than shigure

Unfortunately. I only have to choose one character, which is difficult because the writing of Kyo's character was excellent and also Toru and I love them so much and I can't choose. So I close my eyes and I'll pick one of them by chance. Ah I chose Tooru, but don't worry Kyu, I personally see him as a very cool and special character☺️

Wow I came here just to say exactly what you said.

Shigure is the most complex and Yuki is easily the most well developed character for me, and my personal favorite too. Sometimes I feel that everytime this guy enter the scene he learn something and grown up, even when it's not about him (remember Kisa's arc). His character is always learning, from beginning to end.

EDIT: Akira in 2nd for most complex, Rin in 2nd for best development.

My vote goes to Tohru. She is a fascinating character that is utterly grounded and realistic. Her composed, selfless nature may appear as surface level, but when you go into all the trauma behind the curtains Tohru's behavior and mindset seem so sad. Her character goes through so much while being a positive beacon of joy and hope in the who soma family. Best written character in the show!

I adore Kyou as a character but I don't think he deserves to win a "best writing" poll. I think the best written characters are 1) Yuki, 2) Tohru, 3) Akito, 4) Shigure then Kyou. I'm not including the secondary characters because they don't get nearly as much screentime as these 5, so it's not a fair comparison, but out of the main 5 characters I believe Kyou had the weakest development and writing. He simply had the best personality.

I'm still on the fence about whether it was necessary to overload Kyou's backstory with the Kyoko trauma on top of everything else he already had going on, even if the conclusion to it in episode 12 was one of the highlights of Fruits Basket for me... But I think the author tried too hard to make Kyou interesting with backstories when she should have focused on giving him more and better dialogues. Yuki, Tohru, Akito and Shigure had masterpiece dialogues and monologues constantly, while Kyou mainly had interesting events happening around him (and a charming personality). Even when he confronted his father for example, he had almost nothing to say and what he said was bland. Same with his confrontation with Yuki who stole the entire scene while Kyou said almost nothing. His writing only truly shines with Tohru, but Tohru shines regardless of him. So that's my general take on that.

Aside from Kyou, the other 4 main characters are just incredible when it comes to their characterization and development. They're all almost tied for me.

I never even thought of that but you're so right about the dialogues.

I think Kyou is more of a typical archetype than the other leads which is maybe why the author expected people to relate to him without developing him as much as the others, and it seems like she was right considering how much people love him. I feel like Kyou (and to a degree, Tohru) are the more recognizable characters in the series that people can easily relate to and project their feelings onto (which doesn't mean they're badly written, I still think both are well written especially Tohru) whereas Yuki, Shigure, and Akito are more unique characters that you need time to really understand - none of them are anywhere close to what they appear at first glance.

This is very true as well. Yuki, Akito and Shigure were given the type of methodical development you would see in an actual 1000+ pages novel. So whether you will find them interesting or not depends on whether you're paying careful attention to them. Tohru, Kyou, Momiji, Saki and Haru on the other hand, are characters you will love regardless of their development because of their iconic personalities.

As for best written character, i would say:
1- Shigure (you need to watch the show 3 times at least to finaly get him xD)
2- Akito (highly suggest to read the manga to see and comprehend her even more)
3- Yuki
4- Tohru (i say the same than with Akito because they skipped her mother backstory and it makes you understand Tohru even more)
5- Kyo

Its funny how they are the main four plus the antagonist xD

As for best development:
1- Yuki (READ THE MANGA BECAUSE THERE IS MUCH MORE DEVELOPMENT ABOUT HIM THAT THE ANIME SKIPPED AND I'M MADDDD)
2- Akito
3- Kyo

Yuki is probably the most well written largely cause of how less theatrical alot of his storyline is, he feels alot more down to earth in his problems and his relationships largely feel a lot more relatable because of it.

It just came very naturally to me. I didn't have to think about it. Yuki, imo had the best character development. As for best written, I am not really sure what the parameters to measure that are. But, intuitively I'd rank the top 5 as :

4. Tohru
5. Shigure

Definitely Shigure. He was selfish all the way through, and always said so. And yet, I couldn't help but love him. Because even though he was selfish--wanting Akito for himself alone, he did grow into a pseudo father figure to Tohru despite his best intentions.

The little scenes that showed his own wonderment at his caring for Tohru were lovely. When he went to her parent teacher conference I was so happy. Even though he went there to tease her teacher, it was clear he thought about Tohru beyond his own selfishness.

I love how his house became the safe hangout place for the teens/children zodiac members.

In order: Kyo/Akito/Yuki (Can't choose lol), Tohru, Shigure, Rin. All of them had their own different experiences, traumas and goals that you understand every single one of their actions. The way so many things were foreshadowed and come back later to hit you in the gut just prove how well written they were. Totally grateful I could finally see their development fully animated.

I I wonder if people mistook this poll for a popularity poll. Sure, Kyou is arguably the most likable as he has interesting personality, and he and Tohru are best-fit for each others, but I don't think he's that well-written compared to characters like Yuki, Akito, and Shigure.

I used to dislike Yuki at the beginning of the show as he has boring personality, how he interacted with others is just too unnatural, and he acted like a typical shoujo prince-charming character most of the times. However, he improves as the story progresses. His interaction with Tohru, Akito, Kakeru, Machi, Kyou, Ayame, and others slowly changes him into a more human, interesting character. You can notice how different him from the early episodes is to him on the last episode.

If Yuki is well-written for his continuous character development, Akito and Shigure are well-written for their complexity. Shigure appears to be a mere nice, carefree man yet he turned out to be a twisted, toxic, manipulative person that he even goes as far as. The same can be said to Akito. Despite not being a cunning manipulator like Shigure, we learned how she's not merely an evil villain of the story. We learned how the world looks like from her point of view, how her upbringing made her became twisted and induced suffering to others, and how she tried to redeem herself and became a better person at the end of the show

I voted Kyo, but if it had been an option, I would have voted Kakeru instead.

His character is so subtly written, and that's what I really appreciate about him. I feel like he's not only the one I relate to the most, but also just the most realistic.

Maybe that's just me though.

Tohru is one of the best written imo: the first time I see her in season 1, she's really optimistic and enthusiastic but can be sometime quite annoying + cute and I genuinely had mixed feelings towards to how her character is written, like why is she caring so much about her friends instead of herself and at the same time I think that's her charm to help others in need which I like about her trait, what's truly devastating is her parent's death that started to give hint to why her personality is all full social butterfly and gradually in the final season, she starts to embrace her genuine self and letting out all her problems.

Yuki, though he's not my favorite character.

though I would actually say Tohru's mom. the flashbacks in the Final season just kill me, uuuuuuugh.

and I think Risa's backstory is one of my favorite parts of the whole series, too, though I wasn't as fond of her whole thing with Kureno. It works, but the age gap is...eh.
