Fantastic episode. Just when I thought Kaie's death couldn't make me sad, they kill Daiya and Lecca. RIP you two ;_;

One thing I am pissed off about is the Republic's reluctance to send supplies or even reinforcements to the Eighty-Six. I hope something can be done about this in the future.

So, Vladilena Milizé 's superior says that them 86 can be replaced, so the question is, where do they get the replacements?

Hmm, deaths are brushed off pretty easily now...Maybe they'll recollect them in the next episode.

It's laughable to see how the Major is the only one that actually cares for them and sticks with them after realizing that they're human.
Aren't the other people that use the PARA-RAID aswell, realizing that the units are humans aswell? I mean, even in a world where almost everyone is a white haired doofus, you would think that there are people intelligent enough that caught on the units human like behaviour through curiosity, or they just simply asked and had a conversation like the Major does with 86.. Or they actually do and then they pee themselves and give up on the post?

So why doesn't anyone else seem to say something or take action, besides the Major? Even if you're brainwashed to think that they're androids fighting for your ass, you'd use your 2 neurons to think for yourself, rather than eating what your teacher is preparing for you..

I'm curious to see where they get the replacements from... My guess for now is that they have a sex factory where they abuse normal people to create new soldiers.. Or maybe the population of normal people hasn't gone extinct yet and they just choose the ones that actually survive the tests/training.

Kinda frustrating that her uncle doesn't atleast give her a fair reason for why she shouldn't get closer with the 86, besides "Don't get close to the 86". "They're aliens"... It's even more rude knowing that she was saved by one of those "aliens" and he knows that she's aware of their existence but he acts like they're a danger even though they literally use them as guinea pigs... Typical douchebag.

This is kind of like a anime if it was directed in the west but obviously 86 would be replaced by minorities. And the girl would be the white guilt protag.

Oh and that blush falling in love thing was stupid, sorry.

The jumping between time periods continues to negatively affect the cohesion of the episodes, making it more confusing and puts more of a burden on the viewer to keep track of what is happening. However, I still love how this anime is directed aside from that. There are so many little details in the sound design or in frame layouts that make it very rewarding to watch closely.

Episode ends with 'I won't forget.'.

Next episode is 'Will You Remember Me?'

86 seems to like to do this a lot, huh? xD

The episode starts with Shin flashback which he saw the juggs(drone) that his brother uses. The sakura viewing is a nice flashback scene and we saw Kaie and Kujo too.

The part were there fighting the Legion is nicely animated and with the appearance of self proppeled bomb that resembles a humanoid robot that charging towards you is a scary sight. This episode we lose Daiya and Rin with her getting suicide and the other is mercy killing by Shin. Its an intense battle around.

Overall great episode

By far my favorite episode. There are so many powerful, well crafted scenes so far in this series - but I've felt disappointed that they haven't been able to string them together in the right order to actually connect my emotions to what I'm seeing. This episode got me over the fence. I loved the scenes with Shin, they played so well off of the walk down the hallway with that other senior guy, and the look of pure childlike gratitude for a loved one on all their faces at the cherry blossom starfall festival or whatever that get together was supposed to be went down. They're grateful, innately and unconditionally, like a child - that he shoots them in the head before their brains can be havested. AND we see a fantastic half-second clip of Lecca shooting herself, to spare him the responsibility or just to die proudly - and they're not so hamfisted as to have her say which one she had in mind over the radio and ruin it. A half-second of muzzle flash on chin and gritted teet was enough and they let it be.

This episode just kept topping itself - they even got some of that fanservice blushing in as the major realizes she is flirting with the reaper again haha... that's not my kinda stuff but it wasn't bad. Such is the range of this episode, kid brother being choked out by his older brother, walking around a snowy wasteland with a rifle looking badass but confused and picturesqu - later talking to bae on the phone who has things completely backwards and has no idea when she talks to him about his older brother. She made post-its with their faces drawn on them, and she carries them in her hand to demand use of mortars from her uncle - who again steals the show as this towering figure in her life and the only one who can shut her up and bend her back towards towing the party line. Seems there's something sinister going on there and they did a great job of making me think that and doubt that at the same time. She's not getting her way, her new "friends" are dying, her closest friendship is under strain - she won't even use a real egg on her birthday anymore, look at how well they showed the passage of time there by the way. Fuckin' god damn, this was a good episode.

I more or less feel you on this. The military here is waaaaaaay too inept.

See, I didn't take issue with this in the previous episodes because the premise is, this war is ending in 2 years. So, I just thought, ok, anime logic will be anime logic, so I'll forgive this for now. But now we see, nope, not two years, it gonna stretch longer. So... how is an entire military just ignoring it? Even in peacetime, I'm pretty sure military groups are still keeping discipline and the idea that it might stretch longer shouldn't be new? At least consider the possibility? That's what a good commander will do?

And I have definitely wondered if it was odd that Lena is the only one who seems to realize they are humans. On one hand, we don't have enough details on how long the brainwashing is going on, nor what lies people were exactly fed. But uh... now, I definitely feel maybe this should be re-examined. I've been giving this bit the benefit of the doubt.
There's no inherent right or wrong in this universe, but when we think with emotions rather than logic, we make things so.

Fantastic episode.

That cherry blossom viewing was actually really gorgeously animated and that while on the battlefield. I am impressed.

It was nice to see Keia again for a moment, but overall that group was massive. So many faces that we hadn't seen yet, which only means that they had already passed before Lena became their commander.

As nice as that cherry blossom sequence was, it quickly followed with some tragic event. RIP Daiya and Rekka. Didn't expect Daiya to go so soon, but when I think about it now, the death flag was pretty obvious. Poor Anju left all alone and traumatized.

Honestly that Lena blush near the end was gold.

Wow the members are sure dropping like flies but gotta give props because the author has balls to kill of cast which let's be honest is more realistic. (unlike in SnK where most of the major cast lived and only scrubs died usually....)

Lena supporting the 86 this much will likely bite her in the ass later but at least there is a reason to develop her romance. I am assuming she will eventually meet Shin and the rest who manages to stay alive. (possibly getting thrown on the battlefield as punishment maybe?)

You missed the point. The Albas in the military know that there are "human" inside the mech from the start. But they convince themself that the 86 are "pigs", so they don't feel bad about sending them to die.

Like in WW2, somehow the German convinced themself that Jews are subhuman, so they were free to commit genocide.

Isn't the 86 thinking of Albas as "white pigs"? The Albas are brainwashed into thinking that the units are "tools/not humans" forced to not be given names.

If the Albas know that the 86 and other units are humans, the why did the Major have to tell the juniors that the units are actually humans with a heart and a brain that fight for them to protect their "paradise"...
Heck, even the Major had to actually experience being saved by one and be in touch with an actual unit for a longer period to realize they were human all along...

Like I said in my post, Albas consider the 86 as some kind of "brainless/android" type of thing.

Like I said, the Albas considrer themselves "human", and the 86 as subhuman (pig, brainless, whatever term you want to use). So they don't have to feel guity about commiting genocide.

In 1940s Germany, do you really think that the German didn't know that Jews were also human? The Jews were their friends/neighbors/co-workers at some point. But somehow the Holocaust happened. Same things here.

Sorry, I wasn't specific enough in my reply. When I said Albas, I was refering to the army...

The Albas army consider the 86 and other units as "humanoid pigs that failed to evolve", so basically guinea pigs that are doomed to protect the border even if it means death, and their death doesn't matter to them since they aren't "humans" to begin with (for Albas).

The last part of his/her comment was actually a pretty good representation of what happens in the anime...

1. They would not believe. The story behind the legion is already pretty wild, and to hear it from an 86er, the alba who who have been stuck in their ways for 9 years won’t simply believe it. They would think he’s trying to undermine them. Even more so if it’s coming from a sympathizer with the 86er. Her uncle already puts her down each time she tries to make a case for the 86.

2. More importantly, revealing shin’s ability in the process would lead to the republic experimenting on him and ultimately using him as a lab rat which more or less could get him killed. Lena does not wish that. Refer to annette’s convo with lena in this episode.
About para-raid:

All lena can do is put here connections and power to use to convince the republic to authorize use of the artillery and boost reinforcements and supplies, justifying it as important for the nations defense and war potential.

Or it can also be said that the old generations of the alba's army(ex. Lena's uncle) brain wash the new generations hence thats why the fresh students in the classroom scene act that way.

It's more like they are being brainwashed to think this rather than them forcing themselves to... There was a scene where 2 boys were walking down the escalator saying "They're just a part, how dare they talk like that", so I assume that not everyone realizes that they are actually humans. Besides maybe the people that went crazy or commited suicide.

There's no need to further compare ww2 and the anime, what you said the first time is completely correct. But I tell you something, the Germans actually saw how the jews look, hence why they know they are human.
It's harder to know what something/someone actually is if you never saw it/them..And you're also being forced to think something else on top of that.

That's because his death was barely even mentioned in the LN. It was literally just mentioned after a skip in time that he'd died recently, we never saw anything involved with it.

The fact that they took the time to show his death makes me really happy this anime exists, it was one of my big irks with the first Volume that we never saw his death.

In my understanding the alba's just run away after they lost the war and didn't want to fight the legions. Since the government doesn't want to fight they decide to strip all the rights of non-pure albas to fight for themselves. So this means that San Magnolia was not a racist country before the war.

I can't quite remember the actual reason, but I believe that the Albas, the army in particular, used the non-pure albas as experiments aswell, so that's pretty bad. I guess that if they stripped the rights of people from another race so quickly and used their lives to protect themselves, making new recruits think of them as "failed humanoids", I can say with confidence that there were racist people before the war aswell.. Otherwise they could've thought about a way for both races to fight against the legion.

The majority of Albas knows that 86 are human. Only those too young when the 86 had their rights taken from them nine years ago are brainwashed...so basically just people younger than 15-16ish i guess.

It's rare for me to see an anime go from good to outstanding in so few episodes, but 86 has managed that and more.
Sometimes,I can feel a tear in the corner of my eye from the exceptional way this has at pulling heartstrings, with the animation, the voice acting, and esp the use of music.

I can say at this moment,I am glad I'm around to watch and listen to this superb season.(I'm not being crass when I say that, since a friend of mine isn't around to see this, and since it was him who really got me into anime, manga and japanese culture, and I can safely say he would've loved every second of this)

My thanks to all involved at A-1 Pictures for this,I look forward to more.

Yet AGAIN another amazing episode from A1 Pictures! Every week I am in awe of the genuine quality that 86 possesses. Today’s episode was no different.

This week, we saw some wholesome 86 flashbacks, some not so wholesome Shin flashbacks, some insane action with some characters meeting their demise :( , some more cake with real strawberries, and Best Girl Lena turning into a tomato towards the end lmao.

Another 10/10 episode. Excited for next week, as always!

Lena -- oh my heart, you're so cute haha. I'm surprised how much I love her reactions, usually dislike hate seeing flustered moments because they can be cringey, but that was too precious. That girl knows she's in love (probably) even though the slightest idea of PDA is too much. I hope she can help Shin get out of his mind a little.

I'm surprised how much I am warming up to this series. I really thought this would be a B-tier anime; the episodes are too short :l, but it's been executed perfectly. I love how this episode really humanizes the 86, but also stirs my heart without forcing me to go through each side characters backstory. (Especially since they're quote on quote expendable.) I can see Lena's improvement as a Handler also improving as well. Major respect for her to stick around for the killing of a comrade.

i'm also feeling like the whole jumping around is not really working anymore with how predicable it's getting it worked well at the start , even if it's suppose to be deliberately jarring it's effecting the flow

don't even get me started on the incompetency of the military and this goes beyond "this sucks why aren't they taking this more seriously" , know they got time to explore this part but right now i could really use at least one other person caring about the actions of the legion and what if the war goes on longer like self-preservation. is a thing lol

Maybe I should drop this one.

I don't feel compelled by the MCs. The plot armor from the characters isn't exciting to happen.

The last few episode raises concerns of how smart a person who raised to the rank of Major need to be. Milize got to the rank of Major and still didn't get that 86 dying fight for the Republic is a win-win situation.

Shin just be there with his edgy mysterious past.

The science division is inefficient, to be like "Hey something seriously wrong with that division. Should do something? Nah.". But now the MC is there. "The we need to extract brains"

Another thing would be good, if the mechas had a self-destruct installed.
Looks like someone has more talk than think here

Maybe I should drop this one.

I don't feel compelled by the MCs. The plot armor from the characters isn't exciting to happen.

The last few episode raises concerns of how smart a person who raised to the rank of Major need to be. Milize got to the rank of Major and still didn't get that 86 dying fight for the Republic is a win-win situation.

Shin just be there with his edgy mysterious past.

From the guy who rated Captain Earth an 8, AN 8!!!. You're more talk than think I suppose. Plot Armor!!, what did you think this is, Shonen!!!. Milize is a genius in military, but doesn't mean she knows everything considering the fact she is inside of San Magnolia for years after that incident. She's fighting alone, without guidance and context from ppl bcoz all of them are bunch of pigs. Shin just be here, how funny you are considering how long he has live, his brother is his motivation in his hopeless battle in the end. What's the point of self destruct, they cant even replenish their numbers. Looks like you're not that of a deep thinker considering you're a shonentard

I think I'm starting to realize why Anette's relationships never last. Girl's attitude is unbearable as hell.

Another average episode. Two more members of the squad died but again, I never felt anything particular towards both characters so that's that. Daiya's only character feature was to be a lame Anju simp and until this episode, I didn't know Rekka even existed.

Also, it seems this series will be featuring romance as well. Yeah, not sure what to think of it yet.

Oh my god, many 86 died. I realized depth of their bonds again. Very powerful. Direction and visuals are stunning as always.
I'm worried Shin. Because he has some trauma and cruel past with his brother. I respect his faith and personalities.

That last scene with Lena was very cute. Too bad they will never meet each other.

Actually, does anyone know if they will ever meet each other? Just give me a yes or no answer using the spoiler tag.

@aightbet alright thanks for letting me know

This episode is the best so far in my blind viewing experience. Heard the deaths happening in this episode is all original, but still has ties to the LN for the deaths happened "off-screen". I was gonna give an 8 and above for this episode's first half, but the second half stopped me from doing it, as I've got reminded that this is an LN series (a.k.a. equivalent to YA novels in Western countries).

Yes, second half is all original, but it was all good for me to take in given Henrietta knowing something Lena doesn't know. Jeróme as usual obeys San Magnolia's racist rules of not giving additional advantageous weapons to the 86. After that, it's a breather tone, but I know it's obviously fanservice for viewers who are LN readers. For me, it feels a misplaced scene because I don't see any dialogue of Henrietta saying "Deep voiced guys are always the handsome ones you know." and that would've make sense for me to accept the misplaced blushing scene.

I don't know why, but I got a bit cringed in seeing the romance between the main protagonists becoming absolutely needed to tease unless I can accept the fact Lena FALL IN LOVE AT FIRST SOUND.

I try to give the benefit of doubt to A-1 (along with their former counterpart Cloverworks) that this ambitious project of their is "stable" until the end just like what Jobless Reincarnation Part I did.

The staff have managed to convince me once more to see Shinei having his expressions change during his PTSD scene. Now, that's scary I tell you.

Well, after trapped at the unknown wetland area previously, spearhead squadron trapped under heavy artillery bombardment from the legion inside that locked areas. The legion used a new approaching against them, and easily ripped another casualties from the spearhead squadron. They still used the same 'happy first' transition and 'reaper' foreshadowing like before. The two new victim got a little farewell flashback and screen time before finished their duty here. Interesting that they called the same reaper before really gone. Well, thats the burden Shin should've carried at his empty shoulders. While Saori voice under Anju character suits well with that kind of situation. Welp ....

Also, more Shin backstory. His brother really left a headless skeleton back there and Shin kinda haunted by the trauma. Even though there might be some more hidden story behind it. Lena interaction with Shin kinda break the tension and emotional scene previously. Her pov obviously cute af, and the way the chocolate pointing out that shape. The show already ship them 6 episodes in. Good break, and good luck at the next attacking but risked mission, you both.

Thank for bringing a separate anime to try to win the argument.Mr. Vinland 10 Mushoku 9.
Like plot armor is just shonen thing, exist fun armor and meh armors. This is latter.
Milize had the face to give a lecture to the military academy students and didn't get caught by the MP.Because she is so alone. She thought a lot the 86 situation, as genius with good education, she should at least have a manifesto.
The Republic must give ranks like lollipops.
Now I know what Shin is, just a damn Sasuke.Thank you.
So you are saying that is better the 86s kill themselves with a gun, letting the brain in the field to be used by the Legion, and a self-destruct wouldn't give more meaningful death because at least would take one Legion together and destroy the brain, impeding reuse by the Legion.

Great episode. Sad to see Kaie's appearance again knowing that she'd die four months later. The cherry blossom scene was fun. Should've known it foreshadowed Daiya's death. Such a shame he died, he's one of the few that stood out for me and he was really cute with Anju. Didn't even remember the name of the girl who died until this episode, but wow the way she had to kill herself after shutting down her Para-RAID hurt. I definitely did not expect two people to die already in this episode, and so quickly at that. So uhh, does that mean the anime cover already spoils which characters are going to survive by the end of this season? I hope not, that'd kind of piss me off...

Not really sure how to feel about the Lena blushing scene. It was cute I guess although a little out of place imo. I mean I know how the para-RAIDs work and how she's a sheltered maiden who's rarely interacted with guys, but damn girl calm thyself. Well anyways, looking forward to next week's episode as always. The episode title sounds ominous.

Wow, that was a really great episode.

Seeing Lena get so flushed and embarrassed towards the end was really cute. The animation looked amazing during the battle scenes of this episode. I loved the tiny bits of backstory of the Undertaker we got in the beginning of this episode.

New to this quote war, but i don't rly get what u meant in the last bit. Do you mean like it's bad for the 86 to choose to shoot themselves? Why, they don't want to be used by the legion innit? Sorry your wording just made me a bit confused.

As for the scene you mentioned about Lena lecturing the military academy, you're overthinking it too much. I'll let you know from a LN reader that the scene was purely anime-original. It was actually a brilliant way to briefly explain the overall situation of the war and 86, the only other alternative would have been to have a shitty narrator talk over it which would ruin the experience imo. So yeah there is no concept of 'being caught' or wtv since it was just a way for the studio to explain what's going on without a narrator.

Lecca died how? Shooting herself according to the episode.
From what I understood last episode the Legion harvest deceased 86 brain, to keep functioning.
And this "The LN this and LN that",just make so hard to even discuss the episode, with all these LN elitists.
