Damn, I couldn't even tell that was Momiji and looks like his bond broke with Akito after he grew up. I really liked this episode because it revolved mainly on Momiji but I wonder what that beginning was.

This ep corresponds to the chapters I most awaited its adaptation. Momiji is by far one of my favorites in the zoodiac (not counting Yuki and Kyo)

On one hand, there's a lot of too loving and foretelling moments of the beginning of the end. Ayame and Mine reaffirming their bond, Yuki and Machi advancing little by little (Machi all blushed pls!) and although it's not romantic but Thoru and Kisa hug was to cute

On the other way, there's the climax of Momiji's development, its growth that seems superficial cuz it's still silly on the outside, it actually has an impressive maturity. And if we rewatched, from the beginning Momiji was always transparent in his feelings towards Thoru and was always direct with Kyo (maybe laughing kawaii-ish but scathing) And now he says it more moving and concise than ever: yo podría tenerla but she wants to choose you, don't give up. Akito being convinced by his father that he was born to be loved is seen once more. But now the second broken curse Momiji decides to be free, although it scares him, instead of holding the bond that no longer exists

I held back the tears when he left smiling after the talk with his mother, if the ED had been Eden I'd have let out all the cry. but arigato, sayonara

Agreed. I'm surprised people didn't see Momiji had feelings for Tohru. He never hid it. I too was looking forward to this episode.
totally, almost everything in furuba was always there.
in another way, but kinda the same thing happened with Yuki, which could be read as a shiping with Thoru if someone didn't pay attention. And when he finally has that talk with Manabe, all the pieces fit together and there's no doubt his intention was always the search for maternal kindness. Just like Momiji, with laughter and nonsense but with sincerity, always showed romantic displays of affection

I thought that this episode was overall very interesting to watch. I was very surprised to see that Momiji physically changed over the course of a season. I'm still wondering how he was able to break the curse though. Before the rope breaks, they show footage of Hatsuharu fighting with Akito and then Snap, the rope breaks. I was a little confused on that part. But I thought it was very satisfying to watch Momiji stand up to Akito the way he did. I think that he has matured a lot and is a lot more cheerful in a sincere way than a naive, crying through the tears way. But I'm still interested to see what will happen next and what Shigure's next move is.

Damn... they really changed Momiji into a hottie in just one episode. He grew up really fast. Once again, we got to see the past or what they're thinking about their curses. Got to see Akito going mad about everyone leaving her. Welp, they can't stay beside you forever.

I found it interesting that Momiji likes Tohru as well, I always thought she was like a big sister to him. But, whatever. Kyou still not sure about Tohru. Papa Shigure is still funny as ever. I love him. LOL. The last scene where Momiji's mother told him to Take care made him so happy. I hope he finds his own path in all of this.

momiji changed a LOT physically oh my god. but his personality, the things he do, is still the same. his voice is also a lot deeper now but his figure speech is still the same. and his curse is broken. just like that. no cause, no warning, just. like. that. he's free, just like that. but what'll he do now that he's free?

and we're really uncovering akito more, how she gets this "im a god. you all live and die for me, you must love me, you will obey me." mindset, the trauma she went through because of her mother, and just how she became the twisted person she is

i can't believe how this season is delivering things. it's truly amazing.

momiji becoming a hot damn piece in a single episode, i'm here for it lmao

i love how kyou didn't deny anything momiji said to him, but instead gave us his own perspective of the matter. he really is unsure about tohru, but i hope he comes to resolve his feelings soon :peepocry

i LOVED THAT MOMIJI'S CURSE WAS BROKEN. FUCKING WAY TO GO, MOMIJI

You forgot that Takaya sensei is with them on these decisions.

They can still not be happy about them. I’m not very happy with them either. As long as they’re not being rude about it.

I think the episode was great for what it was, but I feel like it’s missing things by coming before other scenes and by being pushed together into one episode instead of separated by a few episodes.

So far in the series I had been able to appreciate the series as Fruits Basket, now I find I’m having to remind myself that’s it’s not exact, it’s an adaptation and there will be changes. (And before someone says, “they changed stuff earlier”, none of those changes had the significance that the changes this episode could bring.”

I completely agree with you and Danae. I really liked this episode but as a manga reader, I can't help being a bit disappointed about the things they cut out due to rearranging chapters and rushing things.

Momiji's curse was broken? That came out of nowhere! I'd have expected Hatsuharu's to be broken first but I guess we don't know what breaks the curse so it didn't pay to speculate.

Hard agree here as well. I mean personally I wouldn't mind so much if they skipped some things but they keep adapting filler which could easily be removed in favour of these scenes but for some reason that's a no go but adapting filler and cutting the actual story/character moments is? Idk I'm not understanding their mindset especially with it most likely being 1 cour.

they squandered insight into Kyo’s character. So many small things were cut like his flashbacks/thoughts during the first and then the second conversation he had with Momiji this week

I understand the mangaka is involved but I've gotta say, depending on how the rest of the season goes, I dont agree with her decisions at all and I hope they haven't dropped the ball. assuming the extent she is involved that much in the final season is large.

Oof, I’m not a fan of some things they did this episode. They adapted the Momiji part very well, but I am disappointed by some of the stuff they cut off, especially the interactions between Kyo and Momiji. There was a small part I wanted to see animated, especially cause I thought it was cute and funny, but I guess they decided to keep it more angsty.

Also, I’m really wondering why they decided to animate that Machi and Yuki scene in the beginning? It was very confusing when I saw it because their relationship isn’t that close yet, and it makes me think they might actually rush quite a few things now. When I saw those beginning scenes I thought they accidentally released one of the ending episodes at first, rather than it being actually episode 5. I’m even more confused on why they decided to animate it so early when it also lead to nowhere in the episode itself, considering that Yuki and Machi were not the main focus for this episode either.

Furuba’s adaptation has been going so well so far, and I honestly hope that they don’t ruin it with how much rearranging they’ve already been doing.

Yes there was a time skip actually! For a more detailed look on that I would suggest picking up the manga! I think it was like a year maybe time skip or something around there? My memory is a bit fuzzy on the exact time the skip was since I haven't read the manga in years.

nooo ... there is no time skip, lol. the only time that has passed between this episode and the last was graduation>new school year, which in japan isnt much time at all. we just havent seen momiji in a little while.

As some people said, this Momiji's growth also bugging me like wtf... did i miss some arc or smth, Momiji is a great character overall tho, really like him. There is some things i feel rushed as well like Yuki x Machi pair, i don't think they are that close to feel the chemistry.

And is it just me or everyone is starting to change and more mature except Kyo himself? idk he's starting to become bland compared to everyone else's development, probably not his turn yet.

This is one of the most painful parts of Fruits Basket imo; Momiji's freedom from the curse makes you realise that the Sohma's issues & problems don't end with the curse. As Momiji said - he can't go back to the time when things weren't broken. He still has no family and nothings really changed. BUT to be free is a beautiful thing because he has hope for a bright and happy future.

I think he hasn't appeared since episode 2, and it's not clear how much time has been between these episodes. Sudden growth spurts can happen in just a few months, and the time difference between ep2 and 5 could have been long enough for a growth spurt to happen, I think?

We saw Momiji in Episode 3. There has been about 3 weeks to a month or so between Episode 3 and 5. Sometimes teens do just shoot up in height during that time frame. I worked at Japanese junior high schools and definitely saw that happen before.

I find the curse thing to be incredibly stupid, no one is tying them to Akito, they can leave and live separately like Yuki and Kyo. Also the curse simply breaking makes no sense. Momiji's sudden growth is yet another thing that makes no sense.

Yes, a great episode.

But what you mean you don't know why? I concluded that it was purely because he came to terms with his attitude towards Akito, realizing he can't be tied to her forever.

Wow did Momiji grew up fast. He's so tall now.

I never thought that Momiji would have feelings for Tohru. The stare Kyo gave him was intense.

This time, Momiji's bond broke. It's really sad that his own mother doesn't know him because of that event and now he is following his own path.

That was quite unexpected. Momiji grew up - by a lot - and the curse was broken for him too? I was spoiled to this fact in season 1 or 2 because I read the wiki but I wasn't expecting this at all.

It's still so unfair how Momiji was basically thrown away by his family. I dislike his father and mother equally. His mother for rejecting him as a child even though he did nothing wrong. His father, for promising him love equal to both of them, but not giving in the end. Basically treating him like an afterthought, and prioritising his own happiness.

But it was great to see Momiji be broken from his chains, to be free. I did not expect him to like Tohru in that way, but in a sense it was fitting. And though of course I ship Tohru x Kyo, I can't help but feel bad for Momiji. If Tohru were to be with Momiji, that's not something so bad either. Momiji is great. I'm sure he'll find his happiness, away from the curse of the Somas.

One thing I might've not liked so much was how sudden he grew I think. To be fair, they didn't exactly show how long it'd been since the last episode, so for all we know it could've been several weeks. If that's so, it would make more sense I guess, and based on the reactions of the people around him I'd say that this happened sometime ago (whether it's several days or weeks I can't say either though).

Also, Tohru and Kisa hugging and exuding hearts was really cute and funny lol

Nothing more needs to be said.
The last time he appeared, on this season ep2, he was definitely smaller than Tohru, this grown spurt felt too drastic and unnatural, but maybe that was also the case on the manga.

Enjoyable episode otherwise.
Also, in the beginning, Yuki was contemplating telling it to Machi, I find that weird because that means he cares more about her than the other people around him, and the show has yet to make him be aware of it.

I cry so much for Momiji. Next to Kyou and Rin, Momiji's story is by far the saddest.

His family literally erased him as if he never existed.

My personal familial story is rather similar to Rin's, and, in my mind, the only thing worse than having a parent despise and abuse you would be for them to completely disregard and forget your very existence. The opposite of love is indifference.

Sweet, innocent Momiji......

If not for Kyou, I would be happy for Momiji to win Tohru. He would do absolutely anything for her.

Please let him find his future family soon... I can't take it anymore ༼,☯﹏☯,༽

Damn. Momiji changed a lot — from his physical appearance up to his thinking process. He becomes more mature and that makes him more hottie — Yuki can now retire as the prince lol. And bro, I'm so proud of him T_____T he chose a new path instead staying to Akito's side — yes man! you deserve to be happy even things are not the same anymore. you deserve so much Momiji-kun!!! Additionally, I'm shocked — he has feelings to Tohru??? I didn't expect that — also their serious conversation with Kyo. like damn. But overall, this episode is really good. I'm looking forward to Momiji's journey.

Anyway, i'm still confuse how their "bond" got broken? like how? can someone explain it to me.

Finally! Momiji's development. Despite choosing not to be alongside his family in the end, he still found happiness—and I'm happy for him for that.

Also not surprising that Momiji's in love with Tohru since it could easily be seen through his actions ever since season 1

Momiji is best boy in this entire series and deserves the greatest happiness. Yes, many of them suffered and they all do but if I could only choose one, it'd be Momiji.

He's tall and handsome and it's sad he has a crush on Tohru which will never come to fruition but he has moved on and that just makes me happy. He is growing up not just physically but mentally and emotionally. Honestly, I liked this episode the most.

Random, seemingly overnight growth spurts happen in real life too (I worked as a teacher at Japanese junior high schools, and there were definitely times when students shot up over vacations / breaks, so between two weeks to a month, about the same time period between Episode 3 (the last time we saw Momiji) and Episode 5).

That being said, in the manga he gradually grows taller, but the anime has to use models to keep consistency among all the animators, so they couldn't depict that detail as clearly.

As for his feelings for Tohru though, those didn't come out of no where, they've been shown, hinted at, and heavily implied numerous times. It's just that, upon an initial read through of the manga or watching of the anime, we read Momiji's interactions with Tohru as that of a child and a teen, because of his appearance, instead of the reality, which is that he was a teenage boy with a crush. Tohru does the same thing with Momiji.

It's an interesting way to play with the audience's expectations based on character appearance.
