We have all seen our fair share of adaptations that have underperformed the quality of the source material. Whether it be the poor art and animation quality, the pacing, poor direction, or changes to the source material, poor adaptations are often well-known and highly criticized.

So, I wanted to open a thread to appreciate the perfect anime adaptations that lived up to or even exceeded the source material. There are the obvious answers (Demon Slayer, One Punch Man Season 1, Hunter x Hunter 2011), but I am interested to hear what other adaptations you all loved and would like to recognize.

It's really surprising how they managed to fit a 30-something hours VN into a 24 eps anime while keeping everything perfectly intact (with some minor exceptions).

I think Hellsing Ultimate is pretty perfect. I'm not saying the anime itself is flawless, but as an adaptation, I can't think of any way it could be improved. In my opinion, it's better than the source material.

Attack on Titan is pretty good, especially S4 which is a panel for panel adaptation of the manga.

Houseki no Kuni is also a really good adaptation that does its source material justice with the visuals and music.

Hyouka is a good adaptation of the first volume in the Koten-bu series.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is a good adaptation of its manga.

I've been avoiding 0 tbh, I heard some not so great things about it and the original's ending was already very conclusive, so I didn't get around to it.

Clannad is an excellent adaptation and don't listen to anyone who says otherwise.

Little Busters is very good but I wouldn't call it perfect.

Although the 1997 Berserk had to cut out some characters to fit the budget, it's still pretty faithful to the source material and does justice to a lot of memorable scenes in the Golden Age arc of the manga.

I'd say Kaguya-sama. Especially given how the big romcom adaptations lately have been lacking a lot in some areas (ToniKawa, Horimiya) it's nice at least one romcom adaptation doesnt' feel completely butchered

The promised neverland adaptation for 1st season was great, but I think the jaibreak arc in the manga was a bit better because they skipped a few stuff in the adaptation. nevertheless, I find the last 2 episodes from S1 better executed in the anime.

GiTS is the best example. the manga is just pure infodump

Vinland saga anime was outstanding, but I still prefer the prologue in the manga by a tiny margin because the animation had some problems

A wise decision. It never got better--it only got more insulting.

Especially what they did to Rukako. Holy shit.

The most obvious one would be K-ON! Turning an average 4-koma manga into one of the most remarkable cute girls show. Thanks to KyoAni for adding ridiculous amount of details and attention to its animation too.

Hikaru no Go, the best thing about the adaption is the pacing. Every episode ends with a little cliffhanger and it makes it very bingeable series. They also did amazing job with the OST, especially for the matches. Made them very intense and captivating

If you go in expecting OG Steins;Gate quality you'll probably be disappointed but 0 does manage at least justify its existence, not ruin the original ending, and be canon in one fell swoop which is pretty impressive. 0 does leave some things to be desired though as an adaptation.
Don't let others ruin things for you. Even if a toxic fan pisses in your cereal, you could just get another bowl of cereal.

The only one I could say is AOT until s3 pt2 (I haven't read the manga for s4)

Other ones that seems to be "perfect adaptations" to me would be Monogatari (haven't read any of the parts adapted into anime, but I've read the Off-Season) and OPM (read only the first volume of the manga)

Also, I have a question for people who puts Monster as a perfect adaptation:
Don't you think the pacing is kinda bad? I ended up dropping the Monster anime around ep 40 because it was progressing way to slowly but when I read the manga I binged it and it's now my favorite manga of all time

The only time the series felt like it was moving a little too slowly was during episodes, like, 62-67, when it was in that awkward period between the final two story arcs.

Other than that, I thought the pacing was perfect.

Butchering and Romcom go hand in hand.

Just look at Oregairu, is literally the best sold and rated romcom in the LN world(and MAL) but the anime was completely shit.

Kaguya sama is an exception to this rule I can say..

I'm going to say Attack on Titan because I believe it is one of the few anime that surpasses the manga( I still love both) because of way better fight scenes, excellent Japanese voice acting, and incredible animation. The numerous manga cuts are also fine to help with the great pacing.

Source material > Anime is sadly true more often than not. However, some that come to my mind are, Akage no Anne, Kenpuu Denki Berserk (1997), Monogatari and JoJo maybe.

Haruhi Suzimiya was a perfect adaptation. KyoAni took every little detail from the LN such as Nagato writing her name on her shoes and put it in the anime, but made it far better than anyone could have expected it to be.

Been watching Zero no Tsukaima recently, another adaptation from 2006 just like Haruhi. It made me realize that had Haruhi been adapted by another studio, it could have come out looking just as cheap and cheesy as Zero no Tsukaima.

I'm not going to say perfect, but a few that stand out to me as being really good.

Kono Oto Tomare and Beck b/c I felt they nailed the music. Music related manga can sometimes be a little bit awkward to me so I really wanted to see how each of these anime would make the music sound and they both did a fantastic job. Sure Beck might have some of the worst art / animation going, but it also nailed the ending I think despite finishing way before the manga did.

Ao No Hako looks like it's on the right track. The beautiful art is really helping bringing the manga to life. Yubisaki to Renren did a nice job I thought. Again looked pretty and was really curious how hearing the main characters inner monologs would work and I think it worked well. Also Usagi Drop because it did the smart thing and ended way before the manga did.
