By now it's beyond clear that 2020 Higurashi is a sequel to original Higurashi/Kai anime and all VNs. It is absolutely not an alternative version like "Related Anime" section claims, I've tried submitting the change a long while ago but it's still the same and might/will confuse a lot of people who are not yet deep into Higurashi/Umineko ^^

Agreed. Especially after these last few episodes, it’s just dumb to have it as an alternate version.

For some reason, I feel that the more people ask the mods to change the status of this anime to a sequel, the more stubborn they are in letting it as an alternative version. If people still had doubts after Nekodamashi, they have been completely cleared by episode 18.

Seems about right.
I don't know how many times I submitted the change by now. Someone is being either extremely stubborn or they are so busy with other shows that they just didn't see it yet.

Because there are some people who still believe it’s still an alternative version

So is it the sequel of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei?

Cuz Kai is the sequel of The first and Rei is the third so is this the 4th is that what everyone is saying?

because I know in the first it kinda felt like Groundhog Day but better then Haruhi’s infamous episodes because Higurashi episodes they may repeat but they all felt different because the version of the episode change to like a new pathway instead going to the same one and that how the 2020 started making it feel like an alternative version like he’s walking a different pathway again seeing a different story but also the same acting as a sequel to it (it’s what I believe but I could be wrong I don’t really care much if it’s a sequel or alternative it’s still a great to watch

I did watch in this order (just in different year when it was first aired)
1 When They Cry (2006)
2 Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Nekogoroshi-hen (2007)
3 When They Cry: Kai (2007)
4 When They Cry: Rei (2009)
5 When Seagulls Cry (2009)
6 Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira (2011–2012)
7 Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak (2013)
8 Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou (2020–2021)

To know the truth we need to listen to

This is 100% a sequel. It was mismarketed. I'm shocked Ryushiki himself said this could be watched without seeing the originals.

After episode 14 definitely becomes a sequel and the biggest sin is that this thing requiers Umineko knowledge aswell which is bad even for the OG Higu readers/watchers. Without that context this is as confusing as it is as confusing for a newcomer as it is for an OG fan which is also bad. Fate made that I could read Umineko (at least the context I needed at the time) in order to get what is happening and for myself this is very enjoyable but for someone that doesn't understand whats happening this must be pretty atrocious to witstand which is understandable.

Wow that is a lot of time investment to watch this show.

Thats why I can't recommend it even to those who saw the original. I only have a friend who is a big fan of the OG and Im providing her with some context that at least she could understand this or to not fell totally off...of course I didn't spoiled her with Umi info (because its kinda impossible without full context) but as long as she enjoys it with the context I provide its enough to support it until she reads Umi for herself. But yeah this "remake" CANNOT be understood without Umi context sadly.

What? So far it requires no Umineko knowledge at all.

Umineko knowledge allows you to get some foreshadowing they've done, but I'm pretty sure when it actually becomes relevant, the Umineko elements will be introduced as new concepts, rather than assuming the viewer knows them already.

Umineko? Pretty sure you don't need it. There's only five episodes to go so it's very doubtful they'll introduce anything from that.

You'll miss a few references at the most.

Im not talking about the core of Umineko but mostly about the details and interactions from it. Mostly about the Lambda/Bern duo gimmik, the entire gameboard showoff and other details...at least for me this is far more entertaining and interesting rather that if I only watched Higu and thats for sure

Didn't know this was a thing.
Did the thing you had implement and also placed Kai as the prequel.
Maybe they'll now start finally waking up.

Yep, it's definitely ruining peoples experieces as some watch this thinking the previous story isn't required. And thanks to this the mean score is so low, because of course you wouldn't like it if you can't understand what is going on.

I'm certain the marketing was done on a purpose because Ryukishi is a troll.
You all need to watch Nami.

Well that's fine with me, what I pity are the low scores given because people lack knowledge of the previous story.

I have my doubts that the score would be meaningfully higher (if higher at all) if more people were aware of the previous story.

the low score is because this is garbage, at best half of it is interesting and even that isnt really good enough to make it overall a good show

After the latest episode some comments here aged poorly

Rei should be other since we dont know if it happened in Gou....And why is the original in other anyway, if Gou is listed s Rei's sequel which is a sequell o Kai, which is a sequel to OG?

Sigh...You know what?No gonna ask for more.Seems like it is too much for them to ask at this point.

I have no idea why its in other to the original. I guess since it started as alternative to the OG its the change most users put in? It certainly is a sequel to Kai and if Rei is even canon at all considering its half comedy anyway than its also a sequel to Rei.

Anyway Im glad this isnt listed as an alternative to the first season anymore
