Does sakuga make an anime better in your eyes or would you see it as an attempt of style over substance? As a current example currently I find myself thinking God of Highschool is much more style over substance. However when done right like in a current example of one piece's last 2 episodes and when in conjunction with a good or even decent story it is definitely a plus.

Sometimes it baffles me that a series has standard and mediocre animation 99, 9%,while out of nowhere they hire a unique animator that makes a 10 second sequence with totally different animation and character design, which would have made the series the best of all time if it was used even at 50%

well sakuga is not just awesome animation but also means the (unique) animation style of an animator (key animator) anyway

Smooth and fluid animation is treat to the eyes so sakuga is meant to make anime better. You know how marvelous kyoani works especially violet evergarden and liz to aoi tori are.

As far as I am getting it, sakuga is the concept of distributing the resources of your animation team in the best way possible.
This means you need keen insight which scenes are suitable for which type of treatment.

I don't get the OP with his "style over substance" about God of Highschool.
Its substance...or in other worlds its story is quite simple, standard and even cliche (was that a devil fruit?)...at least so far.
The main selling points for GOH now are the action and the style. Without them nobody would watch it. Thus it totally makes sense to invest sakuga in fights and stunts.

I was referring to how the story is almost non existent and they are trying their hardest to make it seem like a good show but fall short of reaching the mark because it just makes it seem like its appealing solely for the sakuga.

Oh and also ty to everyone posting I appreciate your opinions.

I always appreciate good animation quality, so any sakuga is good imo. That aside, an anime with subjectively poor writing and plot is basically irredeemable in my eyes and sakuga really doesn't change that.

It doesn't hurt but no, animation/art/music etc. all get lumped together as one category and it's only 1/5 of my score so it's impact is negligible.

The thing is that sometimes people just want more fun and action instead of soap opera with very little action in it...

Coincidentally The God of High School ep. 4 was exactly that: soap opera with little to no fun.

My original post was made when only the first 3 episodes were out but thank you for your input I will check out episode 4 sometime in the near future to see if it makes a difference.

I think you are missing my point.
This anime (and not necessary the webtoon source) is focused on action. When it furthers the story its not at its best. The "substance" here is the action. So far we were lucky that the animation team had the resources to put some nice sakuga, because without it those battles would be lame.

On the opposite side is Violet Evergarden. It uses too much sakuga. The team could go with the Hyouka approach which also has smooth animation but it's tamer.
They choose to flex some animation muscles which is nice and all but it flashes out how shallow the story is - just a regular tearjerker.
People liked it tho...but people like gimmicks in this case a sakuga overkill.

Sakuga. Sakuga. Sakuga. I LOVE IT.

I don't mind standard/basic animation long as the art is good, but I would love it if the anime I watch had sakuga in it as well. One Piece has been like this for the majority of Wano since Episode 892, I really enjoy the new art style, and while there are its mediocre moments, every episode has standout moments. Not always phenomenal IMO, but still very great, enough to be considered sakuga.

Although, great animation can never save my boredom of a show. Despite its fantastic art and relatively good animation, I found Violet Evergarden to be an incredibly boring show.

It makes the anime better, but not much rather very little. A show with 5 EPICC Sakuga fights can still get a 1/10. When it comes to the visuals Cinematography is what makes a show memorable and in my opinion is a way bigger part of what makes great visuals then the actual animation quality, impressive shot composition over flashy animation.

Depends on the series I would say.

You have to think about quite a few factors.

The genre of the show, how compelling the rest of the plot is to the viewer and the already established fanbase.

I think new shows that are shounen, that have more of a fighting based theme going, tend to rely more on sakuga to make the anime compelling and establish a fanbase. Here i'm thinking GoH, like you said, and something like Demon Slayer (which absolutely made the series explode.)

But shows that have more fleshed out characters, and depend more on the writing may not need it as much. I mean, it certainly is still going to be the cherry on top, but here I'm thinking something like Mob Psycho 2 for example. For me personally the most compelling moments weren't the sakuga, but sakuga still added something to it.

So basically for me, sakuga can be everything from just the cherry on top, to something that can make or break a show depending on different factors.
