In pretty much every way, this episode did not go down the paths I expected it to. For one thing, Echidna was a lot stranger than I imagined her being, and far less malevolent as well. At the very least, you can tell that she has been craving someone, anyone to interact with, hence her excitement at Subaru appearing before her and her frustration at his cutting the conversation short. Then, the nature of the Sanctuary - almost prison-esque and described as a "testing ground" - caught me by surprise as well. It was made out to be this safe haven of sorts, but it definitely doesn't seem it now. And, frankly, finding out that it's built on Echidna's graveyard is not at all reassuring, even ignoring the trial business. Speaking of, I didn't expect the trial to serve the purpose of breaking the barrier, and I still find it hard to believe that is its primary or only function; that may be how Garfiel and co understand it, but it surely can't be that simple given the presence of Echidna's soul in the ruins. And then there's that ending. Though it was in the OP, I was not expecting Subaru to be returned to the real world, and I'm curious as to why this has happened/why Echidna (who is almost certainly in control of the trial) would force Subaru to return like that, even if only temporarily. That aside, it was interesting to get some hints about the nature of the other witches, not least because that was the only glimpse we were given of Echidna's malevolence. Also, the fact that Roswaal's family have long had ties to Echidna - and his insistence they call her that rather than "Witch of Greed" - kind of confirms my suspicions that he has at least some connection to Witch's Cult and was perhaps the least surprising part of this entire episode. The only other question is the nature of blood required to take on the trial. The initial suggestion that it was based on having mixed blood is almost certainly incorrect, given Garfiel's implication that he couldn't take it on and Subaru's ability to do so. Of course, this raises the question of what's special about Subaru's blood to apparently allow him to take on the trial as well. |

What if i think the show is good but the writing gets worse and i am dissapointed? Is that a concept too hard to grasp? Nah don't take em seriously. They trolled because they felt you commented on stuff already mentioned in Season 1 or previous episodes. But yeah, I gave some reasonable explanation. So chill out. |

Maybe after this they will start using them and hopefully slow the pace a little bit. Probably their main concern was to get to the interesting part a little faster so they don't waste too much time with the boring exposition and the everlasting replies of "OMG SO MUCH DIALOGUE WHERE IS THE ACTION??". That's what atleast i think. |
Ushiromiya Battler, right now, on this island, no one exists except for you. You're the only one alive in this island. However I'm here right now, and i'm about to kill you. Who... am I? |

It felt really stupid from Subaru to not ask anything of Echidna. He should have taken the opportunity to gain some knowledge there. Then again, he has many qualities but being intelligent really isn't one of them. I did not expect a real world twist at the end. This show has been so immersive that the concept of Subaru having a life seemed distant to me. |

Echidna gave him the "qualification" to challenge the Trial. |

Moreover Frederica had warned that Sanctuary is a dangerous place. This was simply not a good time to ask questions. Besides, he mentioned "I'll come back for this Tea Party" which means he'll go back. |

Most people are fans of the series so they've re-watched stuff 10 times and remember all the small details. So they get annoyed sometimes if people make sarcastic comments on stuff already made clear. So don't take any offence seriously. But with that being said, there's LOTS of small details, foreshadowing and information sprinkled throughout the 1st season and these 3 episodes. You'll have to re-watch and re-visit stuff if you want to get a full experience. |

Since you are already dead, can i sak something to you about this magic skill or whatever?" Come on, there are a lot of other protagonists who in the same situation would explore this. Just because you and the author preffer/want Subaru to be like that, it dont null the right of anyone to compare and complain. look, i get that you read part of the light novel (or manga)and have been ranting about this for the past week while waiting for the episode to air. But he was not going to ask about Lore in the situation he was at of being teleported away on his own with Emilia fainting especially after the several warnings about the Sanctuary, as a plus Subaru mentioned he d be back some other time so yes he will ask some stuff later , now just wasnt the time especially now that he knows Return by death s checkpoints can backfire. As i said, it is "spoiler" reasoning that you woudnt be able to say if had not how to know the future of the history. It is really annoying in every discussion about not original anime. Another obvious questions. "Since you knew Satella personally, could you tell how Satella was and any hint about what she wants from me?" Looks like for some people here, in their real life, the things are so boring that they never had to face situations where you need to do lots of questions to people around even with the least chance to know something... Or even more casual situations, like to ask for directions to random people in the street. Maybe the person dont know, maybe will be angry, maybe will ignore you, but you have to ask. Ah... I forgot we are in the middle of anime fans (and japanese novel authors) who hate to speak with people. Now that makes sense. |

Her informations could be very outdated or just plain uninteresting for him to know....heck i bet he really wanted to know whats the biggest star in the universe lol. You are the reader/viewer with meta informations who already even got spoiled about the rest of story. Your reasoning cant be applied to the character. Subaru is a protagonist who the audience expect more, and legit can complain if he is not proactive or more interested in the misteries of the past around him, for example: what is the function the friggin "Witch Factor" he just drink and Beako mentioned earlier? Only be able to do the trial? What are these trials? It is ok to complain when it looks like the protagonists act stupid, and more annoying are the novel readers who came in arrogant way to reason with facts in that moment nobody, in story or in audience, was supposed to know yet. I just know some moments that doesn't collide with this moment. I haven't read the light novel yet and i just know as much an anime only (with some additions about what powers each characters has because POWAH ofc). Also as i said he clearly stated IN ANIME that she is locked there for over 400 years (logically when Satella devoured them) so how could she know things outside her cage? She can't because she doesn't (and even if she does she stated clearly to him that she doesn't know how things are outside and from his perspective her informations could be useless or as i said outdated.) I added there some obvious questions: "Or.. WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED BETWEEN SATTELA (btw, the presence that is with me all the time) AND YOU and other witches? Why did she killed you all, who is Sattela exactly? Who is the witch that, after the events until now i may know, summoned me and gave me the RbD? Just because you and the author preffer/want Subaru to be like that, it dont null the right of anyone to compare and complain. Edit: even more. " Since you knew her personally, could you tell how Satella was and any hint what she wants from me?" Well now we are talking...the problem with him is that he is not everytime into details or doesn't care about them (which is a big flaw) but some of these questions may be already answered by him in a dumb way in his mind but they are still kinda answered in a little manner (thats what i least i can thing of) like: what happened to her and between you and the other witches? (first part of the question is really interesting and he was dumb here i can admit that...he has no excuse for this one....the second part of the question may have been interpretated by "she wanted their powers so she ate them" or maybe "because he is envy she wanted her powers aswell" but this is only a quess) "Why did she killed you all, who is Sattela exactly?" - as i said before...envy and she s witch of envy haha ( i know its kinds dumb and vague answers but maybe he didn't really care that much to get the in depth or the details about it). "Who is the witch that, after the events until now i may know, summoned me and gave me the RbD?"- Satella obviously and how could she know about RbD? Yes she is with of "all knowledge" but how could he have guessed that she would knew about this? He got the experience of heart stabbing when he tried these kind of questions in the past with others and maybe he didn't thought about this at the moment or simply didn t wanted for the fear of being "stabbed" I don't know about the magic things and maybe puck could help him in the future so wasn't that necessary to know this right know " Since you knew her personally, could you tell how Satella was and any hint what she wants from me?"- that s is an indeed a very good question but as i vaguely responed for those upstairs... he maybe didn't though about it or as the situation "pressed" him he didn't had time for that right there right now and also he said that they would probably meet again in the future when they will have time for a longer chat session Look i don't wanna keep his part here but is understandable that he maybe didn't thought about these questions in that time being or simply didn't cared because as i said he was already stressed with Emilia falling before this happened or maybe he wanted to get out so nothing bad was happening while he was gone (the experience trained him for this kind of moments so he knows he doesn't have time to waste like that.) I see why people are mad for this big mistake and i understand them but also i can understand his perspective in that moment. |

Echidna was pretty adorable if you ask me, she didn't really seem evil, eventho she does say that herself. Interesting dialogue and a lot of it too. All the witches have been mentioned by name and what happened to them. It seems that after Subaru was returned to the carriage, he didn't seem to remember anything he talked about with Echidna, which seems a bit odd. Great episode, that cliffhanger though! We get to see Subaru at his home! No wonder he loves Emilia, his room was filled with "silver haired" figures XD |

Didn't take long for Echidna to become best girl, loved her reactions <3 Even Roswaal knows Echidna is best. Facepalmed hard when Subaru refused to ask her for more knowledge, something about Rem at least but not even that, feel like he'll change that attitude later though.. ...and the trial starts with getting slammed by his ripped as hell father lol, didn't see that coming. |

Loved the episode! The mood during the talk with Echidna was really peculiar and intriguing, but the goofy moments did not hurt at all - quite the episode. It was strange though that SUbaru did not ask a thing, there are so many things to talk with her. The ending was kind of to be expected. Maybe not Emilia failing but of course Subaru gets to try out the privelege he just earned. My fear is that Roswaal is going to be unhappy about the way things developed. Not only did Subaru intervene but him being able to participate as a human is too much to be ignored anymore. |

Real slow episode, kinda was hoping for a longer echidna thing. I watched on CR and she said she put the Envy factor in the tea? Is that true or did the tea suppress the Envy factor in subaru or what? I figured the envy factor is what is giving Subaru his return by death. Just wondering if the translation was accurate. |

Ah ...why? Also he was clearly in a dream, so for all he knew time was probably stopped , and there was no reason for him to belive Emilia was in danger, and gathering information is what he must do.........u know, because of his power, the only thing he can gain is information. You do realise when you are dreaming time still passes in the real world, right? For all he knew time wasn't stopped. The last thing he saw was Emilia suddenly and inexplicable fall to the ground as the gem gave off a ton of light. I'm pretty sure any normal person would be concerned for her safety. So what is he supposed to do? Just ignore his concerns for Emilia, and stay and chat up this shady witch who had him drink his bodily fluids? You think that is normal behaviour? Look, I don't particularly like Subaru all that much. He's a dumbass. But there isn't really anything wrong with his actions in this episode. |

It will be revealed in later episodes why Garfiel can't do it.The only other question is the nature of blood required to take on the trial. The initial suggestion that it was based on having mixed blood is almost certainly incorrect, given Garfiel's implication that he couldn't take it on and Subaru's ability to do so. Of course, this raises the question of what's special about Subaru's blood to apparently allow him to take on the trial as well. As for why Subaru can do it - he was given a special permission from Echidna. Guess it says a lot about how dialogue-heavy this episode was that I missed this tidbit in amidst everything else. Not that it's a bad thing, as Re:ZERO has so far managed such episodes much better than most shows ever manage. Might have to rewatch at some point and see if there's anything else I missed, or at the very least go over Echidna's descriptions of the other witches again, as all I could really catch from that (in how quickly she went through them all) is that the Witch of Gluttony made the White Whale (and maybe Lye, given Echidna's use of the plural "beasts") and that most of the witches seem to have been named after mythological figures (Echidna, Typhon and Sekhmet at the very least all fit that, and I can't remember the others to judge). |

Since you are already dead, can i sak something to you about this magic skill or whatever?" Come on, there are a lot of other protagonists who in the same situation would explore this. Just because you and the author preffer/want Subaru to be like that, it dont null the right of anyone to compare and complain. Thanks for these interesting considerations! About the bold point... I know that is forbidden to came with inocent theories in discussion of not original series, since right after that arrogant readers always come spoiler-nuking from the orbit, but i was believing that maybe the plot twist would be that Sattella did nothing wrong, she didnt killed the witches and menaced the world with the malice or the reasons that the history says, and all that was planned by the so called Dragon that defeated her... Or at least Rosswall would say this Well, i will discover ir later. If somebody have an idea about this which is not a real spoiler, pls share! |

Why did he not stay there to ask more questions from the witch? I hate the dialogue of Subaru and his retarded references to things that have nothing to do with anything, and him caring about things that don't matter in the least, like in last episode where he wanted Beatrice to apologize for bullshit reasons, and how he never takes anything seriously despite the fact that he faces death repetedly. That witch was not THE witch right? Its kinda wierd how we only now find out there were more witches. Ask what? How is the weather outside? How are the flowers growing? She clearly stated that she has NO IDEA about how is the world outside now....she is dead for over 400+ years and that cage dimension is just her grave and now she is just a soul without body trapped there in that tomb. Her informations could be very outdated or just plain uninteresting for him to know....heck i bet he really wanted to know whats the biggest star in the universe lol. Now I m gonna ignore what u just stated about Beatrice and how there are other witches (??????) because it was clearly stated in the first season (around episode 8 or so when Beatrice talked about the history of their world and bla bla bla) so i wound bother with info u just had to know No, Subaru is not thinking all this, its the opposite, clearly he is more like an airhead there in that moment. You are the reader/viewer with meta informations who already even got spoiled about the rest of story. Your reasoning cant be applied to the character. At this point the author could come with any path he wants, even this theory has a minimal chance to be a valid pick for him in the future....this guy is a troll beyond resolve...he would do anything to change the story s flow in that manner that many people could ask themselves "wtf happened" and he likes to do this quite a lot...being a butcher really gives you a nice imagination for this kind of massacres lol (and yes he worked in a meat shop in ?--2016 as he stated in one of his interviews ) |
Ushiromiya Battler, right now, on this island, no one exists except for you. You're the only one alive in this island. However I'm here right now, and i'm about to kill you. Who... am I? |

And so we're starting. Another great episode with Echidna being the highlight for me. If only the episodes were double. 25 min it's way too short. |
A Story will always come to it's end. The thing is, will you move on after it's over? |

I advise you (if you have time) to re-watch season 1 once this season ends :-)Guess it says a lot about how dialogue-heavy this episode was that I missed this tidbit in amidst everything else. Not that it's a bad thing, as Re:ZERO has so far managed such episodes much better than most shows ever manage. I actually rewatched season 1 just before this season started up, just to make sure I was refreshed on everything. Definitely helped with a few new nuances picked up in places, as well as better understanding some of what's been going on so far (such as why the letter was blank at the end of arc 3). I'm sure though that I'll rewatch everything once more before the second cour airs next January (any excuse to rewatch my favourite show, after all). |

Only be able to do the trial? What are these trials? He didn't even know there are trials at that moment xD I mean, from the evolution of a normal conversation it would naturally lead to this. The only thing in favor of Subaru's behaviour in that moment is: He was in hurry worried with Emilia. even more considering that he is obssessed with Emilia, and stupid when under this sentiment. Just as in the most cringe moment of the story so far, in his speech on the introduction of the candidates to the throne. Man, i have to check in the first season forum if the same people was justifying there even the most stupid acts of Subaru based in "oh, in the future arc he will... He was..." You know what, i should have know better... you re one of those ´´Episodic critics´´who thinks everything should be revealed instantly and if its not then its bad writing, okay ill leave you to it then or atleast ill just be relieved you ll actually start changing subjects now that the one part you were pissed about is past. Nope, it is ok to hidden info about the plot not to be revealed instantly. What is not ok, for a not stupid character (and i must repeat: Tappei wants to Subaru be like this), is not even TRY to discover and lose an interesting opportunity. Your "ad hominem" fallacy went really bad. And ok, this is past, specially if consider that Subaru will change violently his uninterested mood about "trying to discover the secrets" when he met Rosswall again, so, why dont act like this earlier? (btw, i just read the LN until this point) Ill reply to your stuff in spoiler tags but its just an answer to your question in the spoiler tag rather than a spoiler for future LN like people have said before,he was worried about something else at the time after being teleported and seeing the unconscious Emilia as the last thing before it happened. He d probably be a bit more Chatty with Echidna if he knew he was in calmer circumstances. |
