The term `weeb´is just a more derogatory way of saying otaku. To me they´re pretty similar. |

Not really. They mean the same thing, it's just that Japanese people use the world "otaku" to describe what westerners consider a "weeb". Edit: As the comment below me states otaku can include a wider variety of "nerd" hobbies, when it comes to Japanese stuff though they are the same. |

Well I've been told that otaku pretty much means anyone with an obsessive hobby which can be anything like movies, games, sports etc not just anime. A weeb in its original term reffer to someone who has an obsession with japanese culture not just anime but now nobody cares about those specifics anymore. Personally I see myself as neither of them but I don't mind if I'm called so. |

Nowadays the difference is moot. Otaku for the Japanese simply meant what we used to call nerd back in the 1990s. Weeb is someone who is overly obsessed with Japanese culture. All these terms fell in a single spectrum nowadays. People in the west will use the word weeb for any otaku. Old western people barely know the word otaku, weeb/NEET, so they still use the term nerd. And, maybe I was a weeb but I don't think so. I like some aspects of Japanese culture, especially the street racing culture(drifting, touge), and some of their car culture, in addtion to anime. I may be a little obsessed with it but I like other countries' automotive cultures as well, including our national culture so I think I was partly weeb. I hate Itashas and Bosozokus though. |

weeb is a funnier slang to write while otaku feels cringy af considering its a japanese word being mentioned to describe something that the west already has (nerd, geek, etc) |

Weebs are non Japanese people who act like they are Japanese, although this days this term has completely lost it's original meaning and is use to refer to anyone who likes anime or manga. Otaku term has two definitions positive western which means Anime/Manga fan and negative Japanese which means being obsessed over something to the point of social determent not necessarily anime it could be video games, idols, etc... |

weeb is meant to refer to people obsessed with anime and japanese culture because of the anime they watched. the meaning has deteriorated nowadays though because normies shitted on it otaku is like the others above said, a wide range of nerd hobbies, but it's still looked upon in a negative light because japanese people associate that word with the otaku killer |

I voted "No", as an answer to the question in the title, but to answer the poll question; yes. If you're unironically using "otaku" instead of "nerd" (etc.), you're already a weeb. |

I've learned that weeb refers to someone (usually western) who thinks they know everything about Japan and Japanese culture. They come across as obnoxious and get called weeaboos. Hikikomori and NEET are different. Hikikomori's are NEET, but NEETs aren't necessarily hikikomori. |

its the funniest thing cuz people get triggered when people call them weebs so the politically correct term for them is otaku yet in japan, people use the word otaku in a derogatory way to insult others. So in truth, they're the same thing. |

Between a weeb and an otaku, one can't get laid on Christmas Eve with Najeeb, and the other one would probably marvel at the flame towers of Baku, rather than bore themselves spending hours listening to gagaku. |

An Otaku is just someone who's very passionate about their hobbies, pretty much another word for nerd or geek. You can be an anime otaku, a game otaku, a train otaku, etc. People tend to assiocate the word "Otaku" with anime related stuff though, at least i tend to. Weebs are like Otaku on acid haha. They tend to be very loud and obnoxious, they throw Japanese randomly into their speech. Basically a weeb is someone who wishes they were Japanese. |

As others have said, otaku is basically Japanese for nerd. Though in the west it's primarily used with anime nerds. Also I don't know how common this is nowadays, but in the past a lot of western anime fans (like 14-year old me) used to call themselves otaku unironically. On the other hand, weeb seems to be more derogatory and I don't think I've seen anyone call themselves a weeb unironically. |

Hikikomori is someone who don't leave the house or do it very rarely because of various reasons. You can ben Hiki-NEET like Kazuma, but it's not always. You can call someone who has rich parents and don't go to school, work or training and just parties "NEET" but not "hikikomori". You would call someone who is working online, but don't leave a house at all "hikikomori" but not "NEET". Wakaru? This is a bit of a tricky question. I think that the words should have separate meaning, but unfortunately the meaning has shifted to the point where they are essentially synonyms. I don't entirely understand why people insist that Otaku must be a Japanese word with strictly its Japanese meaning and that it can not have a separate meaning in English. Or even further that using it is weeby by default. English has plenty of words taken from Latin and French and no one calls people who use them Frenchboos or Latinboos and their meaning doesn't necessarily stays the same either. I would say it's legitimate for the word Otaku to have its own meaning in English, which would essentially mean anime fan (in a more obsessed meaning than just regular casual watcher). While the word weeb would remain as word for someone who is too obsessed with Japanese culture in general and in a way where they actually disrespect this culture because they never actually studied it deeply (but rather took their knowledge of Japanese culture mostly from anime, which as we know isn't always very accurate). And then there is word Japanophile for people who do this in a more respective manner when they actually understand it and don't just use random Japanese words when speaking to someone who doesn't know Japanese as someone who is a weeb might. And that's more or less how this was perceived until maybe 5, or possibly more now, years ago. But as so many other words right now (and possibly ever) these words were increasingly used with disregard for their definition, to the point where, in anime community at least Japanophile is practically non-existed word, and weeb and otaku are essentially synonyms, so I digress. I suppose people will figure out new words for this eventually. Until then we are all weebs here, whether we want to or not. As for Hikikomori vs NEET, the definition still remains fairly clear. Hikikomori is someone who never goes out of their house, be it because of some kind of fear or just because they don't have the need to. NEET is someone who is not in education, employed or in training. But they still go outside. Hikikomori in theory could be employed and work from home I suppose, so it's not possible to say that all Hikikomori are NEETs either. |

a weeb is someone who obsesses over anything and everything japanese, they also add phrase endings to english sentences that make no sense and they say random japanese words instead of their own language’s version an otaku is someone who is just overly obsessed in a hobby, like gaming or exercising for an example. long story short, it’s better to be an otaku over a weeb |

They both are technically the same, but it just depends on who you ask and at what time period you are referring to. Otaku in Japan means someone who is obsessed with something (anime, video games, trains, ect.). In the west, the word is mostly used between fans of anime, and other things related to Japanese culture (manga, JRPGS, visual novels, food, tea, dakimakuras, vocaloids, ect.). Now, here's where it gets kinda complicated: the word "weeaboo" originated on 4chan, after moot word filtered the word "wapanese" to "weeaboo". Wapanese, Japanophile, and weeaboo, all meant the same thing, and it was basically a derogatory word for people who tried to "be Japanese". And that's a very important distinction between weeaboo and otaku. Weeaboos tried to "be Japanese" by randomly using Japanese words with people on the streets, and sometimes even lying about their nationality. That is the reason WHY weeaboos were so despised, because they were insulting to actual Japanese people! Now, all that being said, the "weeaboo" stereotype is more of a 2000s thing. By the early 2010s, most "true weeaboos" had already died out, and the word "weeb" is mainly used between regular anime fans, essentially making it the n-word, but, for anime fans. I can guarantee you that the average person who calls himself a weeb started watching anime sometime after 2013, uses reddit, is between the ages of 15 to 21, and doesn't do any of the cringy things "real weeaboos" from the 2000s did. And THAT is what I think the distinction is between "weeaboo" and "otaku". Otaku is a more oldschool word whereas weeaboo (or simply "weeb" as everyone says nowadays) is the more "modern" way of referring to anime fans. WOW, this is a surprisingly complex topic. |

An otaku is someone who occasionally watches anime and likes to talk about the most popular shows with their friends. A weeb is when you post on an anime forum and have an anime avatar and signature, which somehow makes you think you're better than 90% of the world. |
