The underlying tension was so thick that you could cut with a knife.

Hyped for the next episode.

I always loved that moment between Askeladd and Thorkell, when the latter asks the former about the nature of his connection to Wales, and Askeladd hesitates for a brief second, clearly pondering whether it is safe to share this information with Thorkell, but ultimately decides to go through with it. In the end, as cold-blooded and steely-nerved as he can be, Askeladd is still human, and I would say the main reason he uncharacteristically opened up and expressed his true feelings to Thorkell here was simply to experience the relief and sense of fellowship that doing something like that can bring.

As a result of this pacing things out, I'd say this is the first episode since 17 that I would describe as anything less than great, shame the streak had to end but if they do it right the next episode will more than make up for it.

Yep, I felt the same. I supposed they really wanted this episode to end when it did, which I can understand since it is a great stopping point that leaves everything open for the finale. And well, as long as the final episode is as glorious as it should be, the somewhat padded out nature of this one won't be much of a problem.

I'm just worried about how the anime original scenes in this episode might impact future events, but I'll wait and see how they fit into the big picture and trust Wit know what they're doing here (which has usually been the case).

It was just luck. We see in his exchange with Floki that he had no idea about Askeladd's connection to Wales. But due to Floki noticing Askeladd's reaction, he now suspects it.

Wow. By coincidence the king decided to attack Wales. Floki noticed Askeladds reaction. I think it is safe to assume that now the king wants to order Askeladd to lead the assault. ;) Looking forward to the reactions next episode.

Perhaps the greatest testament to the masterful perfomance WIT have put in with this adaptation is that it doesn’t feel like an anime. It feels like I’m watching a live action film or series each time. The music, the acting, the plot, tension, everything is masterfully executed. The scene of Leif talking to Thorfinn in jail is a perfect example. That felt like I was watching a real live action scene. Asekladd’s monologue was also extremely well done. I’ve never seen GOT as I only watch anime, but I imagine this is what it was like in its prime. Only on episode to go which really saddens me, but it will undoubtedly get a season 2 confirmation. I’m really happy to see one of my fave series become so talked about online. For years it was impossible to discuss with anyone. See y’all next week for one more round, Merry Christmas. Onto fairy gone finale.

Looks like Askeladd is having trouble that the King will invade Wales. I hope he'll have a plan about that.

That frame between Leif and Thorfinn was amazing. I still cannot wait for their exploration of Vinland soon. Looks like it won't cover everything in this season.

Last episode next week. Damn.

I hope season 2 will continue this wonderful story, if they will ever do it.

not to be THAT manga reader, but i can't help but be a little disappointed... the other anime-only episodes were amazing, but here they used leif to set up thorfinn's future goals for him, which kinda rubs me the wrong way.

it feels like they know they probably won't be able to make a season 2, so they're trying to bring things full-circle... but i think having all the flashbacks messed up the momentum, since episode 22 was so intense, this episode fell a little flat for me. although i do appreciate what the studio was trying to do, the emotional aspects were great. and the music too!!

here's what i thought the last 2 episodes could've been (big spoilers):

I somewhat agree. There isn't anything in this episode that's outright bad. But from EP17 through EP22, each EP had more tension and/or excitement than the last. But it feels like they took the foot off the gas.

It kinda reminds me of the original content SnK 3P2E7: adapting 1 chapter and filling out the rest with original content + flashbacks + speech pauses.
Maybe, like with SnK, the next episode works best with this EP ending where it did. But we'll have to wait a week to see whether the deviation was worth it.

Askeladd's mind was blown up after Wales came up because

1)Wales is his homeland,he doesn't want it to be burned.
2)Wales's rulers might tell king the truth about Askeladd's descent which gonna be fatal for him.

Which one?I didn't get it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I love the execution decision that leans more towards the movie cinematic direction (quite a few episodes in this series). I believe Fire Force explored that in one of their recent episode as well. Some viewers doesn't think that anime is ready for that yet but I absolutely like it.

The senile old father of a king and the rightful prince of a son are still having their plots against each other for the right to be King...and this is made WORSE in front of the Danish people as the clash between Father and Son as rumours falter around.

As for Askeladd, the battle of wits against King Sweyn and his mercenaries continue from the past. He thought he was close to winning, but when King Sweyn has waged against Askeladd's hometown of Wales, AWE IN ABSOLUTE SHOCK. Floki and the others may have noticed, but it's still a hunch nonetheless.
But the war on Wales before Spring is another mind-war games to stop Askeladd's honetown from perishing into a sea of fire under the hands of the Danes.

Inherently, the anime-original scenes about Thorfinn's search for "paradise" after being brutally beaten up by Askeladd the last episode. Leif still survives from the aftershock of Thorfinn losing his dad Thors to Askeladd and Thorfinn's beating anger, but to break the truth still doesn't give consolement to him. It's nice to see Leif still being very optimistic about fulfilling his dad's last honours, back home, to Vinland.

The back-and-forth scene bantering are already what made this anime special, and between Askeladd and Thorfinn's desire to do what they're required to do.

HOWEVER as Askeladd's luck has unfortunately ran out and the karma onto him slowly, bit by bit. Will he be able to defeat King Sweyn's battle of tactics after wit?

Next and last episode, the end of the prologue. And we're just only getting started, if a Season 2 is imminent.

I sort of lost interest in Thorfinn’s character after his fight with Thorkell. Right now I’m really interested in the development with the Prince and Askeladd. I feel though that in the final episode of season one... the loss of Thorfinn if he chooses to leave with Leif will really throw Askeladd into a spiral... he’s already overthinking enough about the entire Wale’s situation!

Ah yes, “””adjustments””” that are likely to make an entire second arc less impactful as well as the end of this arc.
The Leif talk annoyed me, I kept thinking of the negative implications it would effect future events. I swear if they try to resolve all this because of some small talk with Leif instead of a whole future story of redemption and purpose I will fucking give this anime a 1/10.

Askeladd is in a bit of a bind, isn't he? When he thought that the pieces were falling into place for his plan, it was completely blown out of the water when King Sweyn declared that his army would wage war with Wales. This left Askeladd shocked and it didn't go unnoticed either, since Floki was able to get a good glimpse of Askeladd's expression and then eventually told Sweyn about it. This mental battle of tactics is going to go on for a long time yet...

The scene with Leif making his emotional talk to Thorfinn about wanting to take him to Vinland was powerful and moving. It does make me wonder if Thorfinn will be persuaded to go with him rather than stay with Askeladd in his obsession with killing him to avenge his father's death, but who knows.

The episode ended with Askeladd being summoned up by Sweyn. The last episode has me hyped up already as I have no idea how this scene will play out next time. Afterwards, fingers crossed, a second season of Vinland Saga will hopefully be made. =3

They most likely want to end the story right here, they knew from the very beginning the ending of this season would be a huge cliffhanger for anime only.
there are not gonna be a season 2 unless they will follow the manga, but this episode mostly guaranteed an original ending, but I hope I am wrong about this.
Anime only will not understand what so bad with this development with Thorfinn unless they reed the manga.

Anime Fans : Leif X Thorfinn scene was splendid !

I feel that, if a character "coughs" in an anime and it isn't included in the manga, ppl will rage calling anime shit and vice versa. Some ppl are allergic to originality and new stuff.

Anyways, the Episode is good as always, but I feel that 24 mins won't be enough to end this anime in the finale. Hope they dun rush it.

There have been anime original parts particularly in the first half that Manga readers appreciated.

The problem with the anime original content in this episode is that the best case scenario is that it was filler in the most literal sense of the word and that it doesn't matter at all.

The worse scenario is that it is going to be followed up on in the next episode which means they're changing things in the finale to try and tie things up neatly in the absence of a second season.

And if you're worried about them possibly rushing the finale imagine how worried we are that they might also be wasting time on that.

Although that it's a filler like you say, but for us, anime fans, we loved it. If manga fans watch animes like original animes, forgetting the fact that they already know what will happen next, they'll admire it too. And not only this scene, In ep 17, manga readers complained a lot about it just because of some minor details. Even the director had to apologize for it. VS manga fans are something else I swear.

Even if the events are changed Idm actually if it's well-crafted. If they want to make something original, fine, but make it good, I'm here to rate the anime not the manga. Like I dunno what's happening in the manga so whatever I watch, I'll rate it based on how good it is.
I have to agree with you in the case of the finale's important events being distractedly changed in a negative note. Then yeah not only manga fans will complain, but anime fans will as well.

I think that, the staff behind this anime know how to deal with it better than us, judging that the studio that's in charge is WiT. So I guess that this scene has a significant role in the upcoming episode or even in upcoming season - if there's any -.

Thanks for your reply btw ! I appreciated it.

The episodes directly following Thors' death were mostly Anime original stuff, scenes like Thorfinn being about to kill Askeladd in his sleep and then deciding against it were not in the Manga, and they filled in gaps and enriched the story especially now having seen the contrast between how Askeladd enacted his own revenge last episode.

What I'm saying is, like others have articulated in this thread, if the original scenes in this particular episode weren't filler, it's a bad thing.

If they actually turn out to be important it contradicts a massive arc in the Manga yet to be adapted.

If there's going to be a second season adapted from the Manga the Anime original stuff in this episode cannot matter, it doesn't fill in gaps, it changes Thorfinn's development from how it went in the Manga.

And even if there isn't going to be another season I would much rather they just focus on doing this "prologue" arc justice and leaving it there with at least the possibility of a continuation in future.

I don't think any good can come from them trying to jury-rig a satisfying and final conclusion to a story that was intended to continue for another 150 chapters.

I feel weird about this episode.

It was great. But every time we were back to that original dialogue between Leif and Thorfinn I couldn't help but yell inside my mind "NO, NO, GO BACK TO ASKELADD, WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME". I really wanted to see that scene (manga readers know what I'm talking about) in the end of the episode.

I'm not bashing the director yet, let's wait for the last episode.

As a manga reader, I'm actually worried so much about Thorfinn earlier development. It seems like they want to overshadows that after what will happens, Thorfinn isn't going to be a farmer, but just go with Leaf (well, it's not really a spoiler, since I'm sure almost all people, even though not a manga reader knows that Thorfinn is going to be a farmer). Plus, it they really makes second season, the hype will goes down because of this early development and Thorfinn transition won't impact his character that much. It's not like we're bitching because it's useless and bad, it's because it will ruins the best arc in the series.
