Lol Mai-Chan got a live-action movie adaptation. And yeah, Uziga Waita is hard to beat on shock factor.

The same thing.
Also, Gantz was very hard for me. Tried to re-read it, but burst into tears and could not stand till the end.

Yesterday, I attempted to read "Eko Eko Azarak," but it was way too dark for me, and definitely the darkest thing I've ever read, although I haven't read much Manga.

I had to drop it almost as soon as I started the second chapter. It was way too violent and disturbing. I usually make it a rule to avoid the horror genre, but I thought that this would be more tame due to its age, but there was nothing tame about this atrocity.

I haven't read much mangas but for me it is Blame! It was so dark for me (it had some weird pictures too) so much scary and blood! Though it is really scary, still it is one of the best mangas I've ever read!!👍

Shamo!

The MC is an evil martial artist who cripples his opponents and takes advantage of women. There was this one rising Muay Thai fighter from a poor village he was fighting. He kicked him, with his big toe, on the EYEBALL. This burst the other fighter's eyeball and won him the match. About 50 chapters later, he sees a blind, starving, toothless, depressed homeless guy in the street and realizes it's the guy he blinded. He doesn't give a damn, either.

Came to post Homunculus. I couldn´t simply get it out of my mind the rest of the day when I finished it.

Battle Royale is a nice and soft intro on what handgun (!) bullets do to a human body. Reality is worse because grayscale doesn't do justice to that red/pink/white color of gore. The facial expressions are lost in translation as well.

Uhm, also, does anyone else realize how disturbing it is that the same author who wrote Mai-Chan's daily life also wrote Shin Gendai Ryoukiden?

I mean, the same guy who wrote this fetishist story about killing and raping an immortal, compliant innocent, young looking kid....
also chose to illustrate the stores of actual true crime stories? like, stories about people who actually lived and were horrifically murdered?

anyone else, like....picking up on how creepy that is....

(obsv they are both creepy beyond belief without that realization, but....)

Yeah, it's a depressing read but on the other hand, it's also extremely happy at times. Since they know they're going to die soon, some of the characters manage to live their life to the fullest and die happy.

Suck It. It's about a guy who has a fetish for taking POV pictures of people giving him head - and it quickly spirals into something horrifying. Disgusting read, but with a somewhat amusing ending.

Normally I'd say Berserk, but Kono Yo no Owari e no Tabi was highly disturbing/dark at times.

Clearly you haven't read Hako no Naka no Mii, or Akutoku no Sakae,, or... others. Can't remember every single name people mention, but there're far more screwed works out there. I don't like including hentai I stumble upon in these discussions because you'll always find some degenerate shit worse than anything you'd find in more serious manga. Not to mention that one I skim for fapping, while the other I read for the story.

Thanks for the recommendations, I think I read Haku no Naka before but Akutoku is pretty crazy. Have you read Madoguchi Moto's works? I believe those are up there as well.

My first thoughts were both the Sailor Moon manga and the Madoka Magica manga, but damn, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle also really got messed up once it headed that dark direction. And then the plot gets super-twisty-try-to-keep-up-if-you-can for a couple of volumes.

Obvious answer is obvious: Berserk. I'd be able to reread that manga if it wasn't for the Eclipse and the Eclipse alone. But some of these other manga that people are talking about sound worse...

Speaking of other people, some titles that nobody mentioned yet:

Kasane: It's a great psychological thriller/drama/tragedy. Not as dark as what others mentioned though...

Totsukuni no Shoujo: It has a very mysterious plot and a uniquely ominous yet enchanting art style.

Monster: I'm sure everyone knows this one already, but just in case: It's an awesome thriller set in Germany that touches on a lot of moral ambiguity-type topics.

I'd list others, but I've been really grappling with the definitions of "truly dark" and "edgy" lately, and I hesitate to bring them up.

I would have to say Killing Stalking (a manhwa), Berserk, The Scum of Good and Evil, and Prison Lab. (I can't really pick one.) I've read a large portion of Killing Stalking and Prison Lab but I haven't read much of the other two. Despite that, I have read enough to get an overall feel for the atmosphere. All four of these are just...dark.

When I define "dark", I define it as something like 'exposing human depravity and evil' and 'Bleakness with little to no hope", just to give you a reference for where I'm coming from. These are manga where the bleakness and nihilism and trauma are just...they're memorable and make me stare at the wall.

1. Mai-Chan's Daily Life (didn't finish. I don't need that kind of evil in my soul)

2. Berserk

3. Feeding Lamb. Oh bitch. Bitch. This is..this is a flavor of bleak and nihilistic you ain't never gonna forget.

4. Bradherley no Basha

5. Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show

6. Ultra Gash Inferno

Things To Keep In Mind:
  • You shut your mouth when you're talking to me.
  • My thirst for anything humanoid (and legal) cannot be contained.

I started reading manga about a year or two ago out of getting tired on waiting on season 2s. So I havent read all that much but the darkest that I have probably read would have to be either Devilman Lady or Berserk

If I consider the darkest fantasy series I’ve read, I’d choose Berserk. It’s super brutal and the characters have had super dark and tragic things happen to them over their lives. If I were to choose a realistic series as the darkest I’ve read, it would have to be Oyasumi Punpun. The issues the characters face are extremely tough, such as severe depression and immense loneliness, and it can lead to drastic actions and the degrading of their mind. It’s a little trippy in certain cases, but with the main themes of depression and dread I consider it to be the darkest manga I’ve read.
One, "sleep it better than humans," says Shukaku.
Two, burning in fire, Matatabi.
Three, leave the water to Isobu.
Four, hot as lava, Son Goku.
Five, always on the run, Kokuo
Six, taking it easy and not in a, Saiken.
Seven, the flying leaf insect, Chomei.
Eight, "Yeah!" is all it needs, Gyuki.
Nine, "ko-kon" cries the mighty Kurama.
