I wanted to start reading more manga but it's something that's been bothering me. Lots of manga I'm interested in are still ongoing. You have no way of knowing when they'll be finished, or even if they're ever going to be finished at all. I saw many people saying they prefer manga because the stories are more complete than in anime, my problem is - they aren't. I really haven't seen that many anime that end with a huge cliffhanger like Berserk, most of them at least finish cetrain story arcs, give you some conclusion and even if there are still some loose threads left, you can consider them "completed" and tick them off on your list. On the other hand, many manga seen to stop in various moments, sometimes in a middle of an arc, and you have to wait weeks, months, sometimes even years for some conclusion. Sometimes you never get any conclusion at all. And another thing is, I don't like to leave things unfinished so having countess ongoing manga in my "currently reading" section would just tick me off, I'd get lost in all those stories.

How do you deal with it? Doesn't it bother you when you read ongoing manga? How about manga that have really slow updates, like Berserk or HxH - do you even remember what was happening after such long and irregular breaks?

It honestly doesn't really bother me much, as long as the story is actually progressing at any rate at all. Series like Berserk and HxH are anomalies rather than the norm in this regard. It might just be that I happen to have a really damn good memory or something, but juggling these 150~ series I'm actively reading is honestly not that hard for me. I can just jump in and have a fairly good memory of what last happened, even if it's been months.

I do understand the feeling of not wanting to jump into something that'll potentially keep going for ages though, or just something you won't be able to get ALL of right away. It's why I generally don't watch much anime as it airs, for instance. For some reason, I'm pretty fine with it when it comes to manga though, and I can't really explain why.

You are absolutely right.

For me, if it's a continuous story, I stop at the end of the last complete story arc, leave it on hold and move on to a differeng manga. It's easy with Berserk or Hunter x Hunter for example, because their wiki pages mark the exact chapter where a story arc ends. With Vinland Saga on the other hand I took a guess. The official translation is at volume 20 now, and a story arc ended with volume 14 and not sure if the next ends by the time I'd catch up, so I'm taking a break.

For more procedural manga, you can stop at the end of any volume and wait for the next full volume. In this case a volume usually a short self-contained episode of the full story with loose connection to the rest.

Yes, it's a bit inconvenient that I have to put down something for years maybe, but at least I can take my time and read other stuff and I have good memory. I can also flip through the previous volumes to refresh what happened.

I just read manga that are either completed or nearing completion, which is just a wild guess based on what readers say, official news, or just assumptions based on averages of the demographics or genre of the manga in question (which could totally be 100% inaccurate)

When it comes to ongoing series I buy them, like Bloom Into You, A Promised Neverland, To Your Eternity, etc. Yeah I have to wait 2-4 months but I like reading by volume

It is annoying tho, but as another poster said just flip thru the previous vol to remind yourself what happened. I look at arc summaries personally

There's a reason I read only 4 mangas now... (One of them I got myself into after deciding I'm not going to read ongoing mangas..). but there are many temptations out there... I try to stop myself. The mangas I read, except for the new one... One is 500+ chapters weekly (Noblesse) and one is published for 15+ years (Skip Beat) and one for 10 years already (Kuroshitsuji). So... yeah, I had enough.

i mostly read ongoing manga, it can be annoying that your favorites dont have many chapters, but its a good feeling when the latest chapter is out.

The way I am approaching ongoing manga is simply reading them until I am caught up in them, and if something happens that the author is unable to complete those manga, I will just delete them from my list. Sure it may seem like a waste of time to get caught up in a manga just to wind up deleting them, but that's just the risk that comes with reading ongoing manga. At least the stories of what I did read from those unfinished manga will be with me.

There's also the more positive side that if I get caught up on a bunch of ongoing manga, and they actually do finish over time. That will be a bunch of manga that I will be able to add to my completed list in succession.

If possible, I avoid them.

I don't have patience to wait a monthly manga and around 20 pages of weekly manga is still not satisfying.

Usually I wait a couple weeks for manga and then catch up. Webtoons I follow every week. I definitely enjoy a series more when I get a conclusion though

Generally I tend not to start ongoing manga unless they already have a high chapter count, have been critically acclaimed, or have been recommended them. But if I do read an ongoing series, its usually either one of two ways. The first is through physical English releases. For those series I make it a point to not look the manga up online at any point. The second way is that I binge read a series up to the latest released chapter where I will then put it on hold for maybe weeks-months, sometimes even years now that I'm looking at my currently reading list. Rinse and repeat.

It only really bothers me if the manga chapter ends on a cliffhanger, is in the thriller/mystery genre, or if the story is suspenseful. Otherwise I can wait.

The worst is when a manga you like gets dropped from being translated. But thats a different topic all together.

If I stumble upon something I enjoy, I'll read it regardless of its status. Too bad I end up forgetting them later on :< That's just how it is with manga.

I just read whatever interests me, really. Sticking to only completed manga may work for some people, but it seems like most of the things that catch my eye end up being ongoing and, as mentioned, there's no way of knowing when they'll end. It could be years and I'd rather not wait around in uncertainty.

For series I really enjoy, I'll read them weekly/monthly and for others, I'll let them sit and build up 5-10 or sometimes even 20 chapters before catching up.

If something hasn't updated in the last six months, I'll move it to on-hold and consider it "dead" until further notice, whether that's due to the series actually being on hiatus or there just not being active translations. That's the only hard rule I keep for myself in an attempt to keep the ongoing list relatively focused.

There's easily about 100 publishing manga i'd like to seriously read.
But i've discovered that I tend to lose enjoyment with these more than anything else. Most publishing works have sadly ended in my dropped list.

I can't resist from picking a couple of them up but yeah I try to avoid it as much as possible.
Same with manga that is completed but has on-going translations.
You never know if it's going to be abandoned by the groups working on them.

I've already sent HxH to its grave. Good Riddance. And honestly... Berserk better watch itself because Zzzz.

If you are interested in it, read it.
You could always stick to only completed manga if it weights you down that much, but you might miss out. I usually only pick up ongoing manga if they have a couple chapters like 20+, that way you will get something out of the manga and will build up excitement for it. If it's a popular manga it will probably also finish up sometime, for example, I'm reading aot and Yona of the dawn and they both have 100+ chapters and are ongoing and I don't have a single doubt that I will get that ending one day. We always have horrible hiatuses like Nana (year 8 now) but try it. If you hate you can just stop. but don't miss out ((:

i only read an ongoing manga if it has around 50 chapters. then i leave it and wait for a lot of chapters to pile up.

If your new to readin manga then i advice avoiding ongoing ones as they can make you frustrated? well at least they did make me when i was new.

It's honestly a gamble in how much investment you want to put in. If it's kinda mediocre or laid back then I don't really mind the wait, but if it's a LONG series, instead of catching up to the latest chapter, I recommend reading by arcs. Find a good stopping point where something gets resolved and then let it pile up. This makes it easier to remember what was going on once you pick it back up again + more to binge read as well.

I tend to forget most heavily story-driven ongoing manga. Especially of those that are long. It doesn't help that some are dropped in scanlation, so there's little hope of any team picking up and continuing the story, and even if by some miracle it gets picked up again, it would've probably been such a long hiatus since then, so I put it as dropped.
Long series that have immense success ie. OPM, MHA, OP, AoT, etc. would have a more consistent schedule. So, if I want to read a long on-going manga, it has to be successful in the west.
On the other hand if it's a short on-going manga (I know its short because it's complete in JP, but not in translation, or author already announced its official length), rereading the 30-50 ch isn't a problem.
However, if it's on-going with no info about its length and it's not immensely successful, I won't pick it up. Which sucks, because this third category is the most likely, and there's so many manga I desperately want to read. But, I can't read those.

I try to stay away from them, unless they're on a long hiatus(berserk) or I give in to the temptation(Kingdom).

The problem is, they end up filling my on-hold list(that I can live with), but more importantly, that they require me to change my reading pace to one chapter a week, which I hate since I've already noticed by experience from reading One Piece, Hajime no Ippo, Kingdom, that it significantly lowers my enjoyment.

Not being able to binge read when you crave to know what happens next is akin to masochism, and I don't do self-harm haha
So I end up arc reading, which is a good compromise, though I'll admit it requires a fair bit of patience and a mind of steel to refrain from giving in to the temptation of looking up spoilers by pure curiosity.

It depends on the story, some I read as it gets released and some I read when they're complete. Anyways I have so much to read and so many distractions to really be bothered by the releases. I have 2 series that are releases a chapter every 2 months so I'm really used to waiting.

if the story is great & interest me i'll read it anyway. since i like shounen manga mostly they're still on going. but if you want to read a completed one i think the 80s or 90s manga is the answer.

in case for hunter x hunter, i wait it until it's pile up quite a bit and later re-read it around the earlier current arc. i think it's fun bcs HxH never bores me, i even rewatch the anime like 10times. because there's a lot complex plot in there i ended up understand it after reading it several times.

the mangaka works so hard every week until it became a good story and later adapted to anime, i think waiting for the series weekly/mothly is my kind of form of appreciation towards the author for a good stories they gave us :)

most of the manga i read have slow releases so i didn't have any problem with keeping up
the problem i have is when i don't feel like reading them at the moment and stall myself to read something else
they pile up but only 10-20 chapters, no biggie

i only got into Berserk, Jojo, Gantz and Vagabond so i'm a having a hard time starting them since they are long on-going series
i want to read them but i'm not feeling it yet and i still have many yaoi/josei manga backlogs

maybe someday when i really feel like reading them

At this point I usually just like to wait until it's over before I start it.

I have read Iris Zero since its first released in mangafox, maybe about nine years already. But I still can remember what happened in its earlier chapters, even after the series of hiatuses due to creator's health issue. I have re-read it two times or maybe three times since it has only 42 chapters atm.

There's also this one called Dog:Bullet and Carnage. It has been years since it took hiatus but I still can remember the major events in the manga even though I am lost in its detail. I have also re-read it few times from chapter 1 to 101. And it also ends with cliffhanger. So I understand whan Berserk's fans feel.

Doesn't it bother me? Sure it does. I usually hope those manga continue its release. I really want to see what happen next. I am also following a lot of weekly, monthly, and irregular release manga. I have 160s currently reading and there're still more actually. I think I have a good memory span for something I like since despite my huge currently reading list and many of them I started years ago, I still can remember most of major events in most of them I tend to give recommendation in recommendation board by recall it only by looking at its poster. But surely I am lost at few of them. Though, I collect the manga I read physically or digitally so I can re-read or fast-check them when I am lost.

I just read until wherever there's available, or up to wherever I feel like stopping. Then, I do something else and forget about it for quite a while, fast forward 6 months or a year and a pile of chapters will end up waiting for me as I decide to pick it up again (except for Berserk of course, each chapter is like a drop of water in the middle of the desert that you need to consume immediately and cherish it).
