It’s just a question. Why do you watch anime? Because you can do much better rather than wasting your time. I wanted to see what people would say to that. I needed answers like ‘cause we’re just too lazy’ or answers like ‘anime has changed me. I look at things different and anime is special to me. Anime IS the reason i help people’ and the answers like ‘anime has helped me go through depression and not kill myself because i have to postpone my suicide because i’m curious of what will happen in the next episode. Guess i’m living for another week’.
But people took it in the negative way. All i came across was ‘bait’. But i guess i got good answers as well.

And it’s feels so nice to know the meaning of ‘bait’.

I guess i was the only one thinking i’d get smart-ass answers.

I usually watch anime for enjoyment, but when I'm at my lowest low I usually thought of an anime character (usually from a Shounen or Slice of Life protagonist) and how they cope with their problems fill me with determination that I can solve and cope with my own problems. So in short anime is kind of a hope bringer for me but, all in all, it's just another form of entertainment for me.

Enjoyment it is then. Entertainmemt purposes. But there’s more to it than that. When you watch anime, you get caught up in it. It’s something unique and worth spending time on.

Anime serves me as a breather. Never watched it just for the sake of watching it.
I honestly watch it for it's story. I can't get peace of mind till I find out what happens to the characters in the end.
Plus, I'm a pretty introverted person irl. Anime makes it easy for me and pushes me to get into any conversation that includes anime. I can even bring up anime whenever there's a conversation about games and stuff going on. I'd probably have a thousand completed already if I watched anime just to put it in my watch list and brag about it.

PS. You don't need a reason for everything.

Anime is a recreational activity/hobby, there doesn't need to be a reason to watch it other than "it's fun". People can't realistically work or volunteer constantly, they need breaks and what's the point of doing more work than you need to if you would enjoy something else more? There's no universal law that defines what life is for, life is just life. A lot of people arrive at the sensible conclusion that they should try and enjoy it as much as possible, it's not hard to figure out for yourself.

Even as a young teenager I preferred watching cartoons to any live-action productions. I think it's because they felt less commercial. When I found out what anime is, I started to love everything about it: story, art, soundtrack, morals, etc. Watching anime allows me to forget about my boring reality. It also made me a skeptical person. It's fun, informative and inspiring. Basically my hobby and the reason I'm not depressed.

Well, I mean, you're not wrong. But you're not 100% right either. I enjoy anime, I enjoy other things too and so I watch anime and do those other things. Wasting my time? Maybe, but does that really matter?

Like, our life is just a pool of decisions we make, choices we make, things we do. It's easy to say: "well you're wasting your time, you could use that time to help someone, help yourself even". But in the end, who's really out here doing that? There are probably a few saints doing it, I suppose. And I'm sure it's something almost everyone wants to do. But, in all honesty, it's a lot simpler to just sit at home, turn on your laptop and watch anime.

What does it even matter that you're "wasting your time"? Could be said about a lotta things, tbh. Why are you drawing (assuming you don't make money off of it)? Why are you drinking? Why are you smoking? Why are you listening to music? In theory, we don't have to do any of these things but we do. Why? Well there are different answers to each of them but in essence it's because we want to.

Life can't simply be summed up with working and helping people. They are an integral part of our lives but not something that we should let consume us. We all need hobbies, be it watching anime or exercising. We may not gain much from it but as long as we enjoy doing it then what does it matter?

You aren't breaking any laws and you aren't hurting anyone. I suppose one could argue that you're hurting yourself by watching Japanese cartoons rather than doing something productive but I dunno - I'm fine lol.

If you want a more specific answer as to why some people watch anime... Well then, honestly, there are a buncha reasons:

Maybe it's not the story specifically, maybe it's the nostalgia.
Maybe it's the culture.
Maybe it's so you can talk to another friend that watches anime.
Maybe it's the comedy.
Maybe it's just because you want to be different.
Maybe it's to fit in.
Maybe it IS the story - it's generally told in a different way to most Western shows so it's a pretty valid reason, imo
Etc.

Life is about wasting time and anime's simply how I choose to waste mine. But I don't consider it wasting time because I enjoy watching anime. Sure there are some low moments where I'm wondering what the fuck I'm doing but the goods outweigh the bads for me. Whether it's worth the time is up to me, and me alone - and so far it certainly has been!

An interesting question, not one I'd ever ask on an anime site. Even I were to answer it I wouldn't make it as baity as you did. In any case, sorry if I made my thoughts hard to understand - just difficult to put into words what I was thinking. Especially because I'm not really all that great at typing up longer answers haha.
