I was thinking..Is it just a waste of time? I'm not new to them but this is a passerby thought..Can you name anything useful, you learned from anime or manga and mention the name of the series if possible.

NB: I'm not asking if I should continue or not watching/reading

probably about as useful as watching hollywood tv series and movies or listening to music. there ae some exceptions though - certain manga-like book does teach you stuff, so in that sense, reading them is useful.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

Hobbies don't have to be useful, but I guess I am learning a little about Japanese culture and stuff through anime.

What do you mean by "useful"? For me "having fun" is already useful.
But if by "useful" you mean "can I make money/ become healthier/more clever by watching anime?" - then no.

listening to music.

Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory.

Beyond simply making you feel good, however, there's evidence that music can even be good for your health. Research has shown that listening to music is associated with upticks in immunity-boosting antibodies and cells that protect against bacteria and other invaders. Music has also proven to be effective across a variety of treatment scenarios for conditions ranging from premature birth to depression to Parkinson's disease.

It is already said, a pastime does not need to be useful, maybe something like developing a critical thinking, or learn from the teaching that transmits an history, nothing in addition to the own mentality, do not expect to save lives.

Yes, they're quite useful for staving off boredom.

If we're talking about actual useful knowledge I've learned a couple hundred words of the Japanese language from watching subtitled anime.

I say yes. I got a lot of inspiration and different points of view of certain things and even random knowledge.
How should i say this... it's like it made me grow with more maturity than others overall? Maybe that's just because i'm a logical type of person that likes to analyze and look into the dept of all the stories i came upon to ahah idk
Sometimes it also makes me forget how shit my life is so just for that it already deserves to be considered an useful hobby.

Anime and manga are barely useful.

But it's fun, and it's a great way to pass time. In that sense, it may be useful.

The goal of a hobby is to enjoy time doing a specific thing.
Watching anime is a wonderful hobby for me, but I have to admit that there is some hobbies that could entertain me as much while being useful socially (playing sport, mastering a music instrument).

Simply put, anime is a great hobby, but it provides nothing other than entertain

I dont think hobbies need to be useful. If you have fun while reading and watching anime that is already a useful. It is all about enjoyment for me.

Hobbies are a form of entertainment, if it makes you entertained, it serves it's purpose, Oui?

And other than that, if you do keep in mind the vast array of lessons you can learn from any medium, I'm sure you'll find a useful lesson one way or another.

Depends how you define useful.

If you need something to do in your free time, perhaps to wind down from thecsttress of daily life, sure.

But if you mean that it is a crucial piece of your life, certainly not in almost all cases. Unless your hobby is closely linked to your job (in which case lucky you), it's not exactly useful in that sense.
If your favourite character is Tsutsukakushi Tsukiko, you are my soul mate.

Been a long time since I've been here, I'll continue expressing myself freely and believe everyone should too.

To me, manga and anime are never a waste of time. They keep me entertained and I have learned many concepts from it. Sailor Moon taught me about the power of friendship, Pokémon taught me about believing in yourself, and so on. Plus I have caught a glimpse of the Japanese culture, which further pushed me to research more about their culture and traditions. Though manga and anime are hobbies, I always learn something from them. Furthermore, hobbies are suppose to be fun, since reality can be cruel at times and hobbies can take us away from that for a while.

You can't possibly call something a waste of time if that something serves a purpose, in this case entertainment media has a purpose of entertaining people. It's a fact that people have a need to be entertained in one way or another . Just because it's not vital to their life doesn't make it any less important than their other needs. There are many people who admit they are able to go through hard times because of a book, an anime , a movie or even a song. In other words, one could find the support he/she needs from the entertainment media when they can't find it anywhere else. So, next time before you make some bs claim try to think it over before making that claim. Capiche?

Other than keeping us entertained, it has no other practical value or purposes. Same goes for video games, book, novel, movie. And there's nothing wrong with that. That is why I value entertainment value of anime more than deep social message, theme of the anime that have to offer since deep social message, theme are meaningless and have no practical value. It's not like watching anime will help improve your grade or CGPA in tests/academic or help you in interview to get you decent job.

Anime teaches you a lot of things and it also introduces you to a lot of things. Too many things to mention but, yeah it's "useful". Same thing for manga. Both are one of the most creative mediums of entertainment I've ever seen.

Also, a hobby doesn't have to be useful or anything. You like doing it- that should be reason enough to have a hobby like anime/manga.

Well, this hobby is actually pretty useful to me.
I want to become a comic book writer in the future, so reading manga helps me a lot, since I can observe a plethora of different styles and ways of telling a story through images and dialogues.
Anime, especially Shokugeki no Souma, inspired me to start cooking. It may not seem like a big deal, but my stomach will be thankful when I'll get to college.
And it provides me with plenty of entertainment, which is something that other sources of entertainment, such as books or TV series or movies don't often accomplish.
