Well, it gets a pass grade. Seems the kind of junk food I like it.

At least it didn't make me laugh like in SAO II when the goverment hired Kirito as a Sherlock Holmes.

I think this should've been the first episode since we barely knew anything going in. Didn't even expect that she would start out as a pker lmao. It was pretty good chara development and pretty enjoyable. Didn't know there were that many VRMMO's, I wonder if they would ever do another VRMMO anime sans Kirito and the gang. Also LLENN sure is a weird sounding username tbh.

Probably the reason why they started with the first episode as it is, is to attract viewers with cool action scenes, making them interested in the characters and then make them watch the next episodes for explanations. Most people would find background stories boring, so it's not a good first impression to start out with.
From my viewpoint it is a strategy to reel in viewers and try to keep them for the rest of the season.

As for the episode itself, I like the lighthearted take that is not the main series. Kinda like Net-juu no Susume.
Not too serious of a plot with real life at stake and treating a game as just a game.

Having super high Agility status would be ridiculous when you just start out but I'm actually okay with it here. The small stature of her avatar actually makes sense to me for her to have high speed ability.
And I loved that tutorial as well. I actually would love it if there were games to actually talk back and insulting me for doing a bad job even in tutorials.

Seeing LLELN became a PK maniac because of the tutorial chick is hillarious.

Personally I liked how character creation is randomized, I mean. It has been said a couple of time VR is supposed to be a different reality. Do you decide how you look like since you were born until now? Even if it's a game it has a concept of "different reality" same as how game these days use DLCs as a must in game developement. You just gotta look at it from different perspective.

When it was first mentioned in the original GGO I was confused too, what kind of games doesn't allow you to customise your looks? I was always a weird thing back then, looks like it's back again too. Ugh... written by a completely different person but still chooses to entertain aspects of the original that didn't make sense.

Oh well, overall a pretty quiet episode with a little background story to Karen. She also sucks at FPS games like I do, just spray with an SMG. We'll still have to see where the show takes us.
I'm not a lolicon, you're just projecting your tendency to lewd 2D characters.

A decent episode for condensing the introduction, although important few things are left unsaid on the episode like, her family background about her parents that have successful business, she is not allowed to take part time jobs so instead she was given high amount of allowance thats how she was able to buy a lot of games. Though she bought some games with free trial period, iirc from the novel.

I laugh at when rumors spread like Llenn's a hardcore player when she's still a just a newbie and GGO is her first game she played for long, when her pink suit being camouflage is just discovered by her incidentally.

Seems like next episode will be the continuation of first episode's squad jam.

I actually preferred this to the first episode. It helped to alleviate some of the problems I had with the MC. There are definitely still some issues that push my suspension of disbelief too far though. That pink outfit being so good at camouflage that she's practically invisible in the inexplicably pink desert...? Her Barry Allen-esque movement speed...? Kirito was presumably very fast in the SAO GGO arc, but it never seemed so unrealistic that it felt out of place. It does for me in this series. Perhaps it's something to do with the way they're visually representing it here.

No. It's just that, at this point of time the metagame decided that a mix of strength and agility is a winning combination that allows one to wield big guns and be reasonably fast with them.
Of course, LLENN is not the kind of player who keeps track of the metagame - she just went with what worked for her.

"Speed" stat is the most broken stat for all game in SAO universe even she can become PK while she still "NEW" to game.

Everyone can become Kirito using "Speed" and Sword on GGO and yet nobody even think using Sword on GGO until Kirito.

With high "speed" anybody can run as fast as Kirito in a straight line, but the game can't increase your mental speed. You need to have your own high mental speed (like Kirito) to really make use of ability to move fast overall.
Gradually levelling your character to be fast is one way to train that speed, assuming it's trainable, but it's not magic.

Tarotist said:
"Excellent! Never pick up a Sniper Rifle again!" How could you be playing a shooter and never use a sniper? Snipers are fun! So LLENN is the the run-and-gun spray-and-pray type. Well given her speed and P90, she can close in on Snipers easily. Then again, what if there is a stat that speeds up aiming down sights? Dexterity? There better be a character with MAX Dexterity in here! It's the only way to contest a MAX Agility player!

AmuSphere is not mind uploading. It isn't Accel World either. It can only speed up your character, but the player still has to control everything.
VRMMO, by their nature, are more dependent on player skill than normal RPGs.
For example, Alfheim Online doesn't limit speed at all.

Meh, just a backstory episode that gives us the reason as to why she started playing and what got her in the squad jam. Not much happens.

But why can't you create a character in literally any game and instead it's random? That sucks considering that VRMMOS are kinda like a second life.

If you could create / design your character in vrmmorpgs, I think Kirito's harem would mostly be bunch of roleplaying old men.

Have you watched Netoge no Yome? The main character thought so too. Turned out, he was the only real guy in the party, and everybody else were girls.

All the games she tried after ALO allowed free trial.
Which might be the reason they didn't allow proper customization.

Can she just delete and recreate the avatar on same game? she don't know anything about game? there should be "delete" option next to to "create" avatar selection? is there no "delete" option? wtf is this garbage?

"Speed" stat is the most broken stat for all game in SAO universe even she can become PK while she still "NEW" to game.

Everyone can become Kirito using "Speed" and Sword on GGO and yet nobody even think using Sword on GGO until Kirito.

1. "The system makes the player choose one of nine races of fairies for their avatar, each with different abilities and affinities toward magic. Unlike Sword Art Online's system, the player has their game avatar created randomly and only have the freedom to choose their avatar name and select the race of the character. However, for an extra fee, players can reconstruct their characters to their liking. The gender of the player's avatar will match the player's gender in real life by default, and the player cannot change it by any means"

2.About the mechanics is not known, nothing has been mentioned about this in the novels or games but seeing that these games are handled in terms of classes such as FFXI and FFXIV, having more characters is almost useless. Now regarding the other, the girl can not even see options before the game disconnects her.

4. The existence of swords within the game tells that they are for use, even for a niche of players, there you have Pale Rider that uses shotguns, a weapon that has not been seen more in all GGO, the closest thing to a meele combat.

Your brain will adjust itself if you keep using them.

Its same as having really OP char/unit/monster and you can't really use them because its not your current play style.

Tutorial dominatrix was freaking intense. Best part of this episode.

Also, it was a nice setup for the protagonist and showed her inner struggle with her height.

Pretty superficial, as someone pointed out, but understandable since being 6 foot isn't common in Japan.

A nice show so far.

Apparently, you can customize your avatar to the point that is possible "realistically" in-game. That is, Pitohui added some tattoos, and LLENN colored her uniform desert pink, and it's probably possible to style one's hair, but radial changes require real money transactions.
Yes, it's a total cash grab. And it made perfect sense for ALO, because it was made by an evil capitalist.
Everywhere else, it's probably inherited from SEED package that is the basis of most games. (ALO is the only VRMMO known to not be based on SEED)

Asuna is known to have two accounts as of SAOII, so it's possible. Then again, she is rich and might have just paid for that.

After the action that episode one had, this episode was solely dedicated to how Karen got addicted to playing GGO with her character, LLENN. She tried 37 times to get a short and cute character rather than a character based on herself, height included. That's some crazy dedication right there. ^^;

But seeing LLENN progressing during the episode was still enjoyable. Her action scenes were entertaining and her meeting with Pito was enjoyable as well.

On a small note, I noticed that the headphones she used to play music while snacking on biscuits were from Sony. It looks like Persona 5 isn't the only show to use Sony branding this season. =P

I do hope we get to see who Pito is in real life. I wonder if it will be a big surprise or something...

A basic setup episode, which is totally fine. This show looks like it's going to keep things pretty casual. That's basically what I wanted as I didn't want most of the usual SAO shenanigans going on and just wanted to watch some characters experiencing a game.

Also is it weird that the whole time she's trying to find a game based on a character she likes, I'm wondering why none of these games have character creation? I don't think I've ever come across an MMO oriented game that didn't have one other than Sea of Thieves recently and even then, you still choose from a set of a randomized characters.

Looking up at the comments, it sounds like a F2P scam thing perhaps? That would certainly explain why she was able to just randomly run through so many videogames before hitting GGO if they were all F2P lol Still annoys me to hear about the state for our fictional future of gaming lol

lol this is MMORPG but u can't choose ur own character well thats BS, i wished they just retconned it and say this is couple years after the kirito incident and make it u can choose ur own character design. Its clearly the original writer of the series fault not really the one writing the light novel of this series.

u can just read the first 3 chapters then watch ep 1 and really not miss anything however was good animated but the manga did the job also.

My other complaint is really the rules, EXP, PvP how does that come into factor they have to be some buffs right or literally unfair for newbies. SAO 2 hardly explained anything so this could have retconned a bunch and make it a better-realised world not just cool world design.

Besides those 2 this episode is kinda standard however thats not bad if u are comparing to SAO definitely writing is a better because Sigsawa, Keiichi is a decent writer.

PS: Doesnt it make more sense to simply create a new character when its random, rather than to switch games in hope your character wont be the same?

Well, we don't really need to know the rules, apart from the part where it's like a MMORPG.
But if you want, here is a quick rundown of all the parts we need to know:
1) Characters have 3 stats that matter: Agility (speed), Strength (can equip big guns), and equipment (how big a gun you have).
They also have "skills", but everybody has enough of these for their playstyle, and they don't seem to be something that can be better or worse.
2) The game is open-world. Which means you can be ambushed when you're returning from hunting grounds, or randomly get into a fight in any other situation. If you don't like it - get dangerous and fight back.
3) The tournaments like Squad Jam are different, but you still aren't getting any buffs - they are meant to be played by players who are doing well and want to show off how good they got.
Still, GGO didn't exist all that long, so even somebody like LLENN can do it with talent and drive.

Squad Jam... so the MMO they were playing was first a 'regular' MMO, but then the developers saw that Battle Royal was the newest stupid trend and decided to hack out their own cynical version, despite it being completely detached from what GGO was, huh? Wow, that's uncannily similar to reality right there *cough*Fortnite*cough* :|.

but yeah, I'm liking this a hell of a lot more than the original GGO. Granted, the original GGO was the worst arc of them all imo, so being better than it might not mean much, but still. Not bad so far :D

Just watched the first 2 episodes in a row, not bad! I think they should've done this from the very beginning: instead of putting Kirito "the swordsman" in a shooter setting, they should've made a spin-off with new characters.

Don't get me wrong, I totally get why they wanted to explore shooters. It's an incredibly popular video game genre (probably even more than MMORPGs in many regions) and SAO is about getting stuck in a video game, after all. But, still, I think it would've been better to make a spin-off from the get-go.

Anyway, excited to keep watching!

I really enjoyed this episode. It makes you question what happens to Pito and LLenns relationship down the line. Since episode 1 only had LLenn and M participating in the Squad Jam.

I really like how they make use of not involving real world with the game world. Karen plays this game to escape reality and now's shes a small LLenn. I love it.

Pito is interesting though, like will "she" (because we dont really know) turn her back on LLenn? We'll have to keep watching.

Went back to episode one to check some things. Seems like they don't give a date on when the Squad Jam begins. But I did remember Karen had shorter hair at the end of the episode. So I wonder if something happens in game which makes her cute it. She's cute either way.

She also mentions Elza Kanzaki again so my guess is that she'll be in this game eventually or is already in this game. Again comes back to Pito? or that other Blonde girl in the opening? Or maybe nothing at all. So we'll see.

Side note: Is this anime really going to make me choose between Long Hair and Short Hair Karen? Bro shes beautiful both ways!

Most sources describe the novel as "ongoing". Novelupdates says there are 6 volumes out already.
I think this anime will cover volumes 1-3 (same as the fan translation of the novel) in 12 episodes. That would be 2 decent arcs, which is good enough.
It's not like this is Rokka no Yuusha, where the readers/viewers are left wanting to know how it all ended.

Pito is a villain, LLENN is a villain, M is a villain... everybody came to the tournament to kill people, but Pito is the craziest of them all. What's with teaching little girls to name their guns, when she herself changes guns everyday!

Wow this was a surprising turn around from the first episode. Actual character development instead of a bunch of boring action scenes of shooting generic PCs! We know who our character is, we understand what they want, we learn about the world of the game (though really no character custom?) This should have been the first episode but of course they had to start with the action as their first episode because all the adolescent fans of Gary Stu and the Waifu Troupe wouldn't watch otherwise. Apparently brand recognition isn't enough for them to ride off of!

Pito is a villain, LLENN is a villain, M is a villain... everybody came to the tournament to kill people, but Pito is the craziest of them all. What's with teaching little girls to name their guns, when she herself changes guns everyday!

I know they are pkers in GGO, i mean between them, they are in the same squad but seems Pito don't care about this, she drag her close just to gain trust and kill? This is what i suspect from her evil faces, very suspicios or maybe i'm thinking too much into this. :D

So far GGO Alternative is okay, nothing outstanding but it's decent.
Height complex is a very real thing, haven't read the original novel but I want to see her meet Pito irl.

I think regardless of whether or not this show is good people will still bring their bias over from SAO and shit on it.

Did we just saw Kirito on the SaO incident CM?
When someone asks me why I like anime, I'd say Just Because.

I didn't really like SAO so I wasn't expecting much, but I actually kinda like it. The power of Moe compels me, I suppose.

Random characters instead of character customization is fucking stupid.
Outside of that, another enjoyable episode.

Being a 170cm Asian, I would gladly swap for her height.

Usually they show some few minutes of a future event/scene in the first epsiode to allure the viewers with something more intersting than a introduction, but this time they made THE WHOLE ESPISODE the bait!

I dont know why, but that piss me off.

A pretty chill episode that showed us her story. And more importantly, why is she so small and why she wears pink haha
To be honest i didn't expect that she is so small in the game because she hates being so tall in real life xD

I thought this episode would continue where the previous one ended, but it seems that they will show us how she met everyone and how her team got bigger. But let's wait and see :D

Pito's a babe.

When they showed LLENN in real life at the end of the first episode, I thought she was a mother or a teacher. But she's a college student, so that's cool. I like how she's this tall college student enjoying the virtual life as a very small girl wrecking people.
So far, enjoying the show.

This show is great. I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. Hopefully the show can keep up this level of "fun" till the end.

Dat tutorial lady is simply the best. She needs more cameo. She cracks me up with her lines, telling LLENN to never touch a sniper rifle and stuff. And I'm not into such dominatrix type at all. LOL.

It seems like some people feel... irked by the whole (1) lack of a proper character creation for 30+ games in a row, and (2) the MC's obsession with her height. Add in the whole (in)famous SAO connection, and it looks like some of the reactions to this show so far seem rather unusually negative.

Yes, the lack of a proper character creation seems really odd to me too, but whatever... I didn't let it get to my head. It's just one of those "anime-logic" quickie plot device to get things rolling. I mean, the MC doesn't look like someone who'd purposefully choose a "gun based game" as her preferred genre. She seems more like someone who'd go for more... sword and fantasy type? But that's already done with SAO. So there had to be something to make her stay and stick with THIS game. If there was a proper character creation in each game, why would she even play GGO? Yes, it's a dumb and ridiculous reason, but whatever. It made her choose GGO as her game.

As for the height complex, despite all the advantages of taller heights bring... yes, there're actually some people who do have such complex IRL. They may not be common, and I never met one myself before, but I have heard of some people like that in the past... so it's not unreasonable or unrealistic.
To be or not to be... that is not the question. ;3
