THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I love how it’s Yamazaki who’s saying that they came to Edo the same way they left. I can say that’s true from Kondo, Hijikata, and Sougo, since they’re just as quirky as they’ve always been. But Yamazaki Rambozaki? Oh yeah, he totally didn’t change at all, totally… totally. Lol, now Yamazaki’s the strongest Shinsengumi out there. Lol, we the whole shenanigans from episode 202-203 where people’s real selves are attached to their fake selves. Pfft, what do you mean none of Kondo’s original form remains. He was always a gorilla! “T-shirt wearing gorilla”, lol, what were you, Sorachi? Ahodas, wtf?! Oh well, the silliness of the Shinsengumi is what makes them who they are ^_^

Yay, finally Zenzou’s helping the Oniwabanshu with the war! It’s always nice to see characters like Zenzou and Sa-chan act a bit more serious… and of course that doesn’t last for too long. First thing Sa-chan does is try to get close to Gintoki, obviously. And of course Zenzou gets something up his ass, or he wouldn’t be Zenzou. We even got the Dakini to come back in this episode… though in a much more serious manner. But they also have the Shinra and Yato to fight against with too.

Hah, there’s one character who has made an appearance after so long, Kintoki! After getting his own anime violated, it seems like he’s still willing to save the anime of his enemies, lol. Now it’s time for Gengai to shine, with his all new invention saving Earth… the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon!!!! So all that build up was just for one big sex joke, lmao XD

LMAO, the only was the machine works is if Kintoki and Tama help control it by entering in the two balls of Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon. So the dick cannon needs ‘KinTama’ to actually function, hah! It seems like Tama and Kintoki are sacrificing themselves to stop the war. Tama's really changed throughout this series, as she started off more apathetic, but now she's willing to sacrifice herself for the sake of others. Oh well, hopefully both of them do make it out okay.

3 and a half chapters adapted (606-609 and half of 610). And yeah, this episode was more comedy than serious, and it worked really well too! We got the whole Shinsengumi shenanigans, than the Oniwabanshu silliness, and then a Kintama and Neo Armstrong Cannon joke, all in one episode! Oh well, there’s still a lot more comedy this arc will go through! Next episode will probably also adapt 3 and a half chapters. Animations were okay for the most part. A lot of still-shots during the action in the first half. Second half looked nice though, even though it wasn't heavy on action.

5/5

Great episode again.

I laughed so much when Yamazaki and Kondo were talking about they discarded their 'T-Shirts'. Gorilla football part cracked me up even more. XD

The new rock remix of the main theme just goes so well with this arc. I don't really know how else to describe it but it just fits so well into the context.

Oniwabanshuu finally helping out with the war, I was waiting for their appearance. :)
Gotta save the world by Monday so we can buy the new Jump right? That's what priorities are about. xD
Hijikata saying he like Magazine better was funny too. xD

NEO ARMSTRONG CYCLONE JET ARMSTRONG CANNON!!!!!!!!!!!! They brought it back. XDDD

Pretty emotional ending to the episode, the machines sacrificing themselves to give humanity their fighting chance. :(
If Tama dies next episode, I don't know how I'm gonna take it. T.T

Lol never thought that the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong (Gengai) Cannon would be actually relevant in an arc lmao So Tama and Kintoki became the vessels to control the cannon and render every machine useless. My only query from this is that Matsudaira's fleet was there as well but we didn't see them again after the virus was spread around but only the Liberation Army's fleet falling down. They should have been infected by the virus as well. Anyway, another great episode.

About the staff and animation of the episode:

- Screenplay by Shuu Matsubara (松原秀):
Known by Osomatsu-san, Shuu comes from Gintama ° making numerous episodes for Gintama, as in Porori-hen 331-333 and 340-341, he usually does several episodes in a row, in Rakuyou he did from 324 to 328. He is very good, his work at Homeless Arc is excellent.
- Storyboard by Hirotaka Endo (遠藤広隆):
He did the storyboard for episode 323, which sounded good to me. The storyboard of this episode was also good, even with some static scenes, but it was good overall.
- Directed by Matsuo Asami (浅見 松 雄)
He did the episodes 300, 311, 321, 327, 337 .... His last two works are not very good, we have the evil 337 and the disastrous fight between Takasugi and Oboro in episode 327, I do not really like him, but he right in this episode, was very funny and with a touching end.

Animation directors:

Hitomi Tsuruta (鶴田眸) was credited as "総作画監督", he must have supervised the other ADs. He is an incredible animation director of one of the most beautiful episodes of Porori-hen, 332, plus the great 339. Other examples of his work are as animator of Gintoki vs. Jirocho.

ADs:
This week we had 5 animation directors (OMG, this is very bad).
- Satoru Shiraishi (白石悟) (Pieces of 321, 327, 337)
- Aki Kuki (九鬼 朱) (Pieces of 300, 311, 321, 327, 337)
- Reiko Nozaki (野崎麗子) (Pieces of 321, 327, 337)
- Mayumi Funakoshi (船越麻友美) (Pieces of 300, 311, 321, 327, 337)
- Taeko Ogi (扇多恵子) (Pieces of 321, 327, 337)
What can I say ? The disastrous staff of episode 337 is back!
Probably the worst animation team of Gintama, responsible for the worst episodes of the last seasons, unfortunately, they are back.
However, even though I speak ill of them, I must say that they (finally) succeeded.
The episode this week kept the basic quality of the other episodes, without horrible things like in episodes 327 and 337, I think this was thanks to Tsuruta's work in the surveillance, the weakest part were the static pictures, which were not very good, but gives to relieve.

We must remember that this episode was done by the worst staff of Gintama, and even so it went well! BNP again with a great job.

Extra: Studio Wanpack announced that it will close the doors on February 28, due to the death of its founder, Kouji Yamada. This is a studio famous for outsourcing animation and staff to various studios. This was the studio that helped in several episodes of Rakuyou (which shows that Rakuyou's animation really has many problems, since Wanpack usually works in "emergency cases"). Wanpack will leave a big gap in the industry, and will never again help Gintama's animation.

I knew they were going to chill on the animation for after last episode( I don't expect it to go back to Episode 345 quality until a certain fight in the end of cour 1 of SS arc)

Interestingly enough, Studio Wanpack also helped with the first Gintama season and Gintama'. They're also responsible for a good chunk of the animations in the second Gintama movie. BNP didn't use Wanpack until Rakuyou, it seems like they'll never be able to get them to help for this season.

Damn the Neo Armstrong Cannon is back? Talk about a throwback, it's been quite a while. I have a bad feeling about the fate of Tama and Kintoki based on the end of the episode. And of course, the comedy was good once again.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

Having problems in large productions is normal, however, Gintama. was only 1 cour, problems from that level to only 12 episodes is really disturbing.
I hope that SS does not have this type of problem, since it is going very well.

The animation definitely looked pretty derpy in places but nothing super bad and they generally did well with the more important bits.

Episode itself was hilarious, sadly i already knew about the big tonal shift done this episode from a spoiler a while back but im not entirely sure what happens after this though it seems fairly obvious, id actually be kind of pissed if they dont kill tama here and hopefully keep her dead. I worry cause shes a robot they'll just show her rebuilt in the epilogue, I'd much prefer this be a real sacrifice and maybe they will just rebuild a new robot in honor of her, which i could be remembering this wrong but wasnt tama just that too? I vaguely remember that the robot in her introduction arc actually did die and tama was a separate personality just similar. Got to say though after hearing this spoiler for what the toer does i expected both tama and kintoki to do a bit more before all this, feels kind of odd that kintoki comes back just for this and not maybe help out in the fight a bit first before all this happens but oh well. Hopefully they go all out next episode.

So far so good but yes its a bit worrying, rakyou looked like shit at alot of areas but I didnt know about all of the info he added so this really clears up a ton of why it was so bizzarely under par that cour. The thing that really took me by surprise when rewatching rakyou to give it another chance (still got loads of issues but im more forgiving of it now) was that the final episode of the season was absolutly stunning looking, there was a ton of detail, alot of fluid animation in things that didnt need to be such as water ripples when they are at the dock, and the whole utsuro flashback was just beautiful looking. I really hope if rakyou was some production shitfest of some kind and they were able to pull that episode off even if it was notably lacking any action, then we can maybe get some really great looking parts in stuff to come if they seemingly are more stable in production right now.

not making the penis cannon fire soy sauce was an incredible missed opportunity smh

Comedy was on point but I wish the animation was as well.
Ik Gintama is not a show known for its animation nor can BNP transform into ufobudget overnight, but a small part of me wished the final arc gets consistent good animation instead of the standard rollercoaster where the lighter eps get shafted.

I 100% agree, but I guess we can't expect too much. I mean, this is probably the biggest reason I was so against the idea of both seasons Gintama 2017 airing when they did because, for the final ark of Gintama, I think we would all have wanted more detailed animation with the most amount of attention, but what can I say? I'm not an animator, I'm not part of their animation staff (no doubt), so I can't really say anything, I guess just as long as it gets a boost when the series gets darker again I'll be fine.

I agree, obviously the staff is doing the absolute best they can with what they have, but a guy can dream.
On the subject of dreams, I hope all this budget conversion means the final battle would be choreographed along the lines of the Benizakura movie or something.
Actually I wouldn't even mind if they showed a portion of the fight offscreen and had the characters snark about it. With the nature of the show, I think the staff can get away with literally anything as long it's done well. Which is my primary expectation from this season, that it's done well.

They have not participated in any episodes so far, if they participate, we will only see this in future episodes. They stopped showing their list of works in October, and in September, Gintama was on the list (Porori-hen). With that short period of time, and because we're already in Episode 5, I think Wanpack will not be in SS.

not with that attitude it wouldn't eh negative nancy? sheesh it's just my wish for the final season

What are you talking about ofc it's gonna happen. And as the final battle hype surges within the fans, as they become completely engrossed in the superior animation and brilliant choreography, the onion cutting ninjas hired ostensibly for the finale can also finish their primary job of offing them with that much more ease.
At long last MAL and its top anime list will be freed from the shackles of shit taste.

Great episode BNP! The tama/ gengai stuff made me tear up in the manga and the anime was no different for me. I'm a huge tama fanboy. She's one of the nicest characters in the show, and it's awesome that she has such a great role in the final arc. Aside from that, I thought the directing and VAs were on point this episode, even though the animation was that of a weaker BNP staff. The whole takenikazuchi and NASCHAGC (yes that's the p*nises acronym), was really well done with the special effects.

NOOOOO TAMA-CHAN. PLEASE DON'T. I WON'T BE ABLE TO TAKE IT ;_;

Yet another fantastic episode. Loved the whole comedy segment with Yamazaki and Kondo's t-shirts and Kondo changing his shirt to a football player. What even xD It's great to see the Oniwabanshu again and especially Zenzou. Was a nice moment seeing them being re-united with Gintoki :') LOL at Saachan holding that huge gun and saying she can't handle Gin-san being this big. HAHAHAHA.

Isn't that the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon? It's really perfect
xD
The return of the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon. IT'S FUCKING BACK LOL. I love it!

Looking forward to the next episode :D

A golden episode ! Both the comedic parts with the Shinsengumi and the dramatic ones were on point. The ninjas are finally here, with a cool plan to delay the enemies' fleet. The real MVP of the episode though is Gengai, along with Tama and (now that's a character we haven't seen for some time) Kintoki !! I really hope that they won't have to sacrifice themselves ...

I'm really loving this arc so far. Good combination of comedy and drama. Hopefully Tama and Kintoki survive.

If no TV Gintama has the same level as the Katsura and Gintoki vs Harsume MOVIE fight...then why would it all of a sudden happen now?

told ya next episodes probably won't have good animation.. ep 3 and 4 were good because of the fight between gintoki and utsuro. if they keep this up the show won't take a hit in the middle.

also, this is the last season, gintama is ending after 12 years, why wouldn't they make the last battle perfect? it's a possibility.

I can't believe they brought back the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon joke. That caught me completely off guard.

Damn it. Gintama sure messes with you. One moment it will make you laugh your ass off from that Neo Armstrong Cannon joke, the next moment it will make you sad for Tama and Kin-chan.

The best episode in this season so far..
Dragon Ball's and Captain Tsubasa's(?) parodies/references are funny ...
And suddenly we were struck with feels at the end.. I don't want the best girl in this show to die !

Had Sorachi planned the whole joke when he conjured Tama and Kintoki?

A dick shaped cannon powered by Kin-Tama that fires millions of tiny particles, but only once and malfunctions. That is one heck of an ejaculation joke.

Animation was a little off this episode. But it's fine because it didn't really need it. Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon finally makes another reference, comedy was "Gold" this ep. And damn that ending. I hope everything ends well...

LOOL they brought back Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon!!!!
And then straight after hit us with the feels.
How they masterfully weave together comedy and drama is beyond me.

Tama, Kinnoji, hopefully this is not goodbye :(

Ps. Does anyone know the name of the song that starts around the 19:40 mark>?!

Lol, Yamazaki and Kondo's restraint! They are now named as Rambo and Harambe Gorilla (Literally!)

The Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong (Gengai) Cannon is finally here. Though their ammunition is and shooting this version is not as dramatic as the original one, the nanomachines are more reliable (especially against machines)

Goodbye Kintoki and Tama...
