This happened between me and a relative recently, but I'd rather not go into the details.
Anyways, have you ever been insulted or treated negatively because someone either found out or you said that you watched anime?
I mean there are some people who actually be dicks over shit like this even if you are a casual watcher.

It happened in elementary school. I was always made fun of because I watch anime. But that was in a freaking village. Now when I'm in the city nobody actually gives a crap about somebody watching anime.

I'm not you or can control you but if there is something you don't like you gotta deal with it, at least that is the way I was raised. To me situations like that just will keep happening if you do nothing.

People don't really insult me on my face, but sometimes when I am watching anime they give the "ehh, watching cartoon, so immature" kind of a look or that's what their thought process or way of judging me is.

Not personally, but there was a situation when I met people from my university for the first time: someone casually mentioned anime and everyone started talking how lame it is and how everyone who like it are losers, and they were bashing anime fans for like 20 minutes. We just met so ofc they didn't know I watch anime.

No, but I have insulted someone for watching hentai.

*queue story*

It's happened long, long ago. In a place called "Middle School".

One day, I was sitting in class, talking with a few peers. There was nothing particularly "out of the ordinary" about this day.

Then, seemingly out-of-nowhere, I hear a commotion near the back of the classroom. I was interested, so I turned my attention to the group of people who was making said "commotion". After assessing the situation, I figured out that it was a few people who were pretty much picking on one of my classmates.

Now, this wasn't unusual. This particular classmate wasn't the most "normal" of fellows. He had greasy hair (every day), was a tad-bit on the chubby side (he was fat), and he wore the same dirty hoodie every day (through hot and cold, rain and snow, or sunny and clear, he wore the same hoodie). That being said, I'm sure we can all see why this fellow would attract negative attention (especially in a public middle school)

So I listen to the conversation (one sided) that the group at the back of the class was having. Eventually I hear (from the greasy boy), "Yeah, I like Hentai". Now, middle school me had no idea what "hentai" was, so out of curiosity I asked "what's hentai?". The reply I got was "basically cartoon porn".

Cartoon porn!?! *middle school me thought*. That's disgusting!

So I got involved in the questioning of this fellows "interest" and by extension, became one of the bullies.

*fast forward to present date*

Sure, now that I'm a little more mature and have some of the same interest that the boy from my middle school class had, I feel a little bad for bulling him. I still think that he brought it on himself though. I mean, come on, you tell a bunch of middle school kids (boys and girls) that you watch cartoon porn and their gonna flame you. That's obvious.

I will say this though, if I ever have a chance, I'll definitely apologize to him.

I have, but it's because I'm not ashamed of the things I like. I'm a gay man as well, so I'm no stranger to being shit on for being honest about myself to others. I'm not a hardcore weeb or anything, I just think that it is a worthwhile art form. Usually people aren't such assholes to straight up insult you to your face, but there are definitely a lot of people who don't understand it and will talk shit about it. It was a lot worse before though, nowadays anime is somewhat mainstream so there has never been more people who "get" it.

Don't let that shit get to you though, just be yourself and if others don't get it then that's their problem. Some people are just intolerant of people who are different than them, and they're the assholes, not you.

I have indeed been insulted for watching anime by my former stepdad, who seemed convinced that all anime fans are pedophiles.

As tempting as it may be to keep it to yourself, I'm in favor of being public about one's anime fandom. Most people I've met have been cool about it, and it's been the trigger for some of my closest friendships. Maybe not flash it to your employers, but if you're not on the job, you be you. It's worth risking being insulted if you meet some other anime fans irl. Plus, by refusing to be shamed for it, you help to make it less shameful.

For specifics, yes. I have been branded an elitist for liking Evangelion several tomes as well as a casual for liking Attack on Titan, One Piece, and the Evangelion movies. For anime in general, a few times by my parents, I've maybe been called a weeb once or twice by my also weeb friends.

They weren't trolling, they were being edgy in a self aware way, in contrast to you being edgy in an unintentional way. They have an account and watch anime regularly as seen on that account. The joke wasn't to start a flame war, it was to be the exact opposite of what was expected in a jarring way, thus the humor. And don't just try and turn it around by saying it was a bad joke and that he/she needs to try harder, as that is what salty people say to cover up their mistake of assuming.

I never speak of anime in real life and with strangers, that's why i've never got problems for watching them.

But on the internet, i can't go past a single youtube comment section without reading the word "weeb", and that's the reason why i stopped using anime profile pictures, there are very, very immature people there who care about it a little too much, like it's some sort of organized hate movement like the KKK but with chinese cartoons.

Never. But I didn't really start watching anime until my first year in college and basically once you leave school, no one really cares unless they like the same hobby/interest as you do whether its anime, football, wrestling, books, films etc etc. So they don't bother insulting or negatively reacting to you (at least to your face). So I've never been insulted by other people for watching anime since college students are more open-minded than school students.

Never in real life (cuz I don't have one), but definitely on the internet.

There's no issue when it's just a reply on a non-live comment section cuz you can just ignore them...

The problem comes you're:

1. On a stream.
2.The comment section is not flooded (so people can actually hold long conversations).
3. There's no mod to oversee the things (or they doesn't care).
4. You're the only anime fan on the chat.
5. The host doesn't seem notice or care about what's going on in the chat.

Please pray to not encounter a anime hater in this situation. He's going to bash and downplay you the whole stream. And even if you can just leave, maybe the stream's content is something you really don't want to miss.

Not that I can recall but I don't really talk about any of my hobbies unless it comes up in conversation. Pretty much everybody I've talked to randomly about anime likes it or is curious, not openly hostile.

If that happened, depending on the situation, I'd either try to correct the ignorance or just tell them to "fuck off".

Great minds think alike. Although I do have friends that have told my other friends that they watch anime, they dont have any problem with it, but I have this thought in the back of my head that their way of thinking about me will change drastically, no one knows that I watch anime apart from my immediate family, people I chat to via discord and 1 friend who recently moved away.

I've never been insulted about watching anime in person, although I will tell anyone that will listen that I watch anime, but I have been insulted a few times on line.

Some of the insults were rather out there. One insult I recall is that I was a child molester for watching Girls und Panzer. Oh, and I am a member of the NSDAP for liking Girls und Panzer! For some reason that anime attracted a lot of flak.

Several times I have been told on line that all anime is degenerate, which therefore would make me a degenerate. I don't let such retardation bother me though.

Up until around junior year of high school, I hid my interest in anime out of fear of this. But then some friends found out anyway and they didn't care in the slightest. Sure, I would get the occasional "You still watching that hentai stuff?" comments, but I took those to be in good fun. I remember the friends I was with on Xbox Live saw me playing Blazblue and found the title to be absolutely hilarious and constantly asked me if I was playing it.
