This is what i think it takes to be a veteran/expert in anime

  • 700+ anime completed

  • Atleast 500 of those completed are tv series

  • Hentai/Doujins doesn't count

  • Being able to tell what studio made an anime after a couple of eps

  • Able to explain an anime/manga on the spot if asked about it & give a non spoiler synopsis of it

  • Watched/Read half of everthing major that's has over 100+ eps/chapters (fairy tail,fma,dbz etc)

  • Has half the amount of completed manga from anime completed(like if you have 400 anime completed then you'd have 200 completed in manga)

  • Still has time to have a life outside of anime

Im not so sure. I would say it would be a combination of the amount of time you have been an anime fan and the variety in anime you watch.

Somewhere in the realm of 12,000 if I remember right. Including tv series, music videos, movies, ovas, specials, etc. Not sure if all of them are translated or if that's just all that are translated.

i believe you can call yourself a veteran when you've watched atlas 200+ or so anime, and that you can almost figure out what might happen next in the episodes.

While it's true that after 200 watched TV series, you can often predict entire dialogues and events, but that's far from being veteran-tier. As someone mentioned earlier, you can easily watch 200 anime in 2 years if you have enough free time.
A veteran would be someone who has suffered trough endless piles of moetrash and who has seen most of the good anime and recognizes a studio just by artstyle alone.
I think most of us here still have a long way to go.

I have no job and dont got to school. sill. My list including drops is aroud 400 over the course of 20 years... been NEET trash for 7 years. Still have not managed that many anime in that short of time. Might be too busy going to the doctor or i donno really what I am doing. definitely cannot watch that much anime. Husband thinks I am obsessed already and thinks it is annoying that all I want to watch is anime.

Probably at least 300+ or more. You need to have years of experience with the medium. Experience in general animation and history of anime. Important, essential, influental works, directors, studios, franchises etc,. Watch different genres and anime from 60's, 70's, 80's etc,... not just modern anime. Nobody can be an anime veteran without watching some Osamu Dezaki works. If you completed more than half stuff from here you are on good way

I think I have and more. Missing Rose of Versailles and Oniisama e... which I believe he worked on as well. :) Kinda impossible to not watch something from him in my time. but now that he is gone, you have to be a classic lover.

I think to be a veteran anime guru, you would have to watch at least 200 anime series. And not just in 3 or 4 different genres. It would have to be a balance of all them, or at least more than 10, you know?

The ability to do these things is somewhat independent of the number of titles you have seen. I've seen fewer than 100 TV shows but it is very easy for me to discern which studios are probably behind a production.

Jesus Christ, some of you guys have a ludicrous idea of what's considered a "veteran". 1000+ shows...really? Do you even realize how much anime that is?

Say someone is just starting out and watches 10 new shows a season, which is quite a bit imo for the average working adult, it would take them 25 years to have watched 1000 shows.

With some of the numbers being suggested here, it makes me wonder if you guys are referring to veterans of the history of anime itself or veterans relative to the average anime viewer.

Everyone keeps saying that... Makes me confused. I think you are talking about School Days right? Watched it in anime club. It was honestly one of my funnest experiences watching anime.

And I am not a true NEET as I am disabled as determined my doctors and government but still, I have no real life outside anime video games and my dog and husband.

If you have seen every single Gundam, you might just be a veteran. Lol, jk. But my goal someday is to slowly but surely make it through them all (excluding future series that have not aired yet).

But really, the whole "veteran" talk is kind of interesting and like some have said, some of the requirements are ridiculous. I don't consider myself a rookie. I've been on the job for a good while now, but relative to the community at large I'm probably not a "veteran".

But I have been around the block, and my tastes have evolved immensely over the last ten years the very least. I mean I thought Ninja Scroll was the best thing ever in the 90s when I was coming up. Anyway, the episode count requirements make me lolz a little.

No I think someone can be considered a veteran after about 100-150 easily...Believe it or not thats a ton of anime and hundreds and hundreds of hours even thousands and thousands of episodes watched is enough to be considered experienced or "Veteran" if you want it to be considered that.

what you're asking for is extremely retarded.
why would a person want to watch the same series twice, first subbed then dubbed and vice versa.
You also realise that alot of people watch anime raw, right?

Pullman has already said most of what I would here. However, if we were to solely talk about the number of shows a "general vetern" would have watched in my perception, I'd have to say at least 500. Over 200 seems roughly par for an average anime watcher, with less being newb/casual territory.

To break it down even further, I tend to mentally separate at watch counts <100, 100-200, 200-500, 500-800, 800-1000, and >1000. (Yes, I do realize the groups are irregular throughout. I don't really have an explanation for that though.)

Consistency, longevity, and variety in watching have far more weight than completed title count. I consider someone who has been watching anime of various genres from different decades for a long time to be more experienced even though he/she may only have completed under 300 series than someone who only started watching post 2010 and completed 500+ shows with less than twenty episodes in them.

Veronin said:
I consider anyone with under 500 completed to be new to anime, personally. I guess the 1000 mark is where I'd say someone is a "veteran", so to speak.

People in this thread greatly underestimate how many anime there are. 200 is nothing. You can watch that in less than a year.

Anyone can watch a total of 600 shows in the last 3 years and can still be considered new to anime if half of that is comprised of 1-4 episode OVAs, specials, side stories, recaps, or movies.

While I agree that there is an overwhelming number of anime in existence, I think you are greatly underestimating how much 200 anime can be. I've been watching since '99 with barely 200 completed shows (more or less 10 are shorts and movies, and 34 of them are re-watches) and around 50 dropped or on-hold. I'm not necessarily implying I'm a veteran, but I'm definitely not new to anime either.

its a mix of completion number and time.. although time is probably more important

i don't consider someone who got into anime 5 years ago a veteran.. and i don't consider someone completing 400 anime after just getting into the medium 3 years ago a veteran just cause they decided to spend 3 years doing nothing else lol

i'd say at the very least 7 years, but 10 years is probably the standard and even if its only 100, you're still a veteran, you just haven't seen that much

i grew up watching all the anime i could on American TV, i've been watching online since early/mid 2009 and im now past 800 completions, so i'd definitely consider myself a veteran

My views for this have changed to a degree I still feel 700+ completed is needed & more than half have to be tv series but I also feel time is needed more so 5+ years everything else I put I take back

When you become jaded / cynical as fuck and you don't necessarily hate all the shows coming out but you get more excited when one tries something different from all typical tropes you've seen all the time.

feel like you kinda have to be well diverse in all sorts of genres spanning over a couple of years to be considered a "VET" not to say you can't be in one specific genre but it helps.

soft easy number if were talking about someone brand new is about 200-300 over like 3+ years.

How long you've been in the community; how knowledgeable you are about certain aspects of the medium; studios, seasonals, directors, etc.

100 completed is a decent goal to go alongside how much you know; but I don't think it really matters as much as your length of experience with the anime medium.

OT: I don't really know how to become a veteran but it really shouldn't matter and you shouldn't aim for titles otherwise you'll lose the enjoyment in watching anime. I'd rather enjoy watching and let other people acknowledge me than to watch to get acknowledged.
