I mainly use MAL to keep track of the anime i watched, i'm an anime watcher and never enjoyed reading manga. I dont know why, probably the same reason i dont read Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones books, and prefer watching the show instead.

I've watched One Piece since it started airing, but the anime became so bad lately that i dropped it at episode 730. People advice me to read the manga, but as i said before, i really dont enjoy reading manga as much as i like to watch an anime, so i simply dropped One Piece.

I feel like i'm one of the few people here who never reads manga. Did u start reading manga before u started watching anime? Do u prefer manga over anime? Are u the same as me, and only enjoy watching anime?

Tons of people here don't read manga/source.

In fact, based on user comments, it seems that us readers are actually a minority.

Well, before joining Mal I actually read more manga than watching anime, mainly long runners and Shounen Jump stuff. But thanks to Mal I found a lot of awesome shows and I'm definitely more of an animeman now.

So my answer is yes, I prefer watching.

Although I spend more time on anime than manga, I prefer manga because the story is original and much more detailed. And you can't truly appreciate the artist when you see their works animated; they really shine through their manga.

I've always preferred anime but it's usually not a problem for me to read manga, especially when there's no anime adaptation at all. If I can choose anime vs manga I'll choose anime, but if the adaptation was incomplete and I really liked it I'll check out the source. But if the adaptation was accurate then I won't read the manga. For example, I tried reading SnK but I just can't, I'd rather wait for new seasons of the anime.

No you're not alone, I don't read them either.

Nothing against them, but they're just not appealing to me. And I still have to figure out why not, since it's not that different from reading books, which definitely interests me. I guess it has to do with the fact that if I see some drawings with text on them; my brain tells me they have to be animated and emit sounds in order to be stimulating. Since this does not happen to be the case, all I get from reading them is a soulless experience, which then induces me to just be an anime-only consumer.

And I see no problem nor sin in that.

Both are equally good as long as you're able to get fictions developed specifically for each form.

I kinda want to learn towards saying I prefer anime but I'll say I like them equally.

I enjoy them both the same, it's just I don't really spend as much time with manga. When I do sit down though and read through some chapters, I enjoy it just the same.

I don't really like fighting in manga form though (So I wouldn't read like DBZ for example), I'd rather see it animated.

Well, anime is more passive and has more aspects to it (color, music, movement etc..) so I generally prefer to consume stories like that since I'm lazy. But I do think manga as a medium has the better titles, more variety and is most likely generally superior just because of how much bigger it is. I also started manga before anime, bought my first manga (VOlume 1 of Akira) in 2001 and only started to get into anime (aside from stuff on TV) in like 2004-ish.
I probably regret this post by now.

I like them both equally but I watch way more anime than I read manga. The main reason for that is, I enjoy watching anime while doing other things whereas with manga I cannot really do that. Additionally, anime has been more helpful to me while learning Japanese. Once I learn most of the characters, I'll probably start reading more manga, specifically in Japanese.

If it's about action or adventure, I prefer anime over manga. I think anime gives move emotion because we can actually "live" the action but manga only show some picture. But if it's more about the story than the action then I like both equally.

I definitely prefer the anime over the anime, for me it's easier to understand the story and dialogue better also added bonuses such as music, color, and animation. Even if an anime follows a manga faithfully it still has those added elements and I also find reading manga is much more enjoyable in tankoban form instead of online.

While I absolutely love reading manga, I'd have to say I much prefer anime over it in every single way, even if the manga might be "better" so to say, mainly because I just love hearing the character voices, I love seeing them move about, I love seeing animators have fun with a series, it's just so entertaining.

Plus, there is a downside for me when reading manga. If it's not one of the long ongoing Shounen series like D.Gray-Man, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, etc.. then I have an incredibly hard time reading it. I need to read it in one sitting or just be constant with it. I can't take a week after week break. I need to get in, read, & get out, so I look for series that are complete.

This is the only answer.

But I prefer anime over manga since most of the time I have a hard time discerning some scenes in mangas because of no sound/black&white but I guess this is mostly due to my inexperience.

I used to be an anime only type of guy, but then got somewhat annoyed at all those incomplete adaptations and started venturing into the manga and LN world. And honestly, I start to like manga better. Mostly for the variety though, it's easier to find manga that interests me than anime. Probably because I've already watched most of the anime that is really up my alley, but still.

I did liked anime first so my vote is I liked them equally for their respective attributes; stories and artistic drawing for manga. Animation, Backgrounds, Visual effects and Ecchi for anime.

You might as well post a copy of this thread in other forum site, just saying if you're actually trying to gather data.

Prefer anime because I love hearing the original japanese lines and seiyuu, not to mention it's animated, with sound and music and all.

Reading manga only when:
1. The anime pulls an anime original ending.
2. There is no news on the sequel for years.
3. The anime pulls a Tokyo Ghoul Root A.
4. I love the anime so much I usually go reading the manga too (but not go past where the anime is)

Both have their pros and cons.

I'm more of an anime guy, because things like sound/music, motion and colors add a lot more to the experience and make it more enjoyable. In the other hand being limited to a specific timeframe (episode length and number) might be bothersome, especially in adaptations.

Mangas however are more mobile, aren't bothered by things such as slow internet connection (if read on paper) and I just like having them on my shelf :3
Though in that case you have to pay for every book individually...

I prefer watching anime over reading manga. I have read some manga like some chapters of naruto and tokyo ghoul re and shingeki no kyojin. But only enjoyed reading shingeki no kyojin. I believe most of people will prefer anime over manga bacause anime are colourful contains soundtrack which sometimes make watchers emotional and one can understand the story better by
watching anime rather than reading manga.

I feel like it is a lot easier and faster to read manga, on top of that a lot of anime is unfinished and has inferior art (even if it is animated, I prefer a good still shot over an animated meh sequence). I do think I prefer anime if it is originals tho, and I like seeing some things animated, there is also the sound that manga does not have, and even listening to music does not come close because of timing. Well I think a faithul adaptation with decent animation and art will usually be better than the manga, if all it does is expanding on it by adding animation (without damaging the art, or better if it improves (kiss x sis is a good example, the anime looks a LOT better than the manga)), music and other sounds. But that does not really mean "better" as much as it means "more" but w/e.

But in the end, I do not think I have a strong opinion on one or another, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Despite that I have been leaning towards manga more and more recently, I was thinking of switching to manga completely aside from originals and some stuff I wanna see animated at some point but I doubt this is gonna happen any time soon if at all.

I like to say that I enjoy reading manga and watching anime equally.

But.

I find it tedious to consume both the manga and the anime for the same title.

In that case, reading the manga of the show I've watched is kinda rare. (So far, this only applies to Haikyuu!!, Shingeki no Kyojin, and some yaoi mangas.)

Plus, my genre tastes in manga is different from that of my anime tastes.

I prefer watching anime as there is likely potential to get the most entertainment per second since there are a bunch of things that anime offers vs manga (sound, music, animation, voice acting, color, etc). This is especially true for any action anime.

Another thing is that there are huge amounts of various manga available. I'm very flexible and open to reading anything (just like watching anything) which is a problem in this regard because there's just too much, My line of thinking is, if producers are willing to make an anime adaptation out of the source for profit, chances are, I'm going to be assume the manga is good (of course the anime could fail), but since there is going to be an anime, I can watch that instead. It's a filter system. I realize that some great manga hasn't ever gotten an anime adaptation yet, but when I go down the road of running out of things to watch, I'll consider reading them.

Also, in the case for eating, watching is much more convenient than reading, especially if it involves "hand" related foods.

One more thing, waiting a week for an anime episode to be out >>> waiting for 1 chapter. If I kept up with Berserk manga, I might have suffered with that hiatus news

This one is tough to answer..., I started from dragon ball manga though.

I would say... I actually enjoy reading manga more than I do watching anime, if we are just talking on average. But a well executed scene in anime gives me a greater high than a manga high ever could, simply because of music, animation, time spent building up a climax, etc. Unfortunately experiencing that high is not common, so on average I enjoy manga more overall.

For ex: something like shokugeki no souma. Both are solid (anime and manga), but in the manga I can simply skip all the cooking aspects of the show (when they go into depth about the specialty of the dishes created). I can appreciate the amount of effort they put into providing actual cooking content that might appeal to those that like that aspect, but I don't care about that stuff nor am I trying to learn it. I cook sometimes, but I'm not reading the manga to learn cooking tips or be fascinated by the dishes created. It's mostly for the characters and shounen aspects. It takes me a couple of seconds to skip that stuff, but when you watch the anime it might take like an entire episode or two, or 3, or 6.

Manga allows you focus more on the aspects you enjoy in this case, simply because it's faster and easier to skip the stuff you don't care about.

This also allows for a more complete first impression, where as with an anime that doesn't quickly appeal to me, the pacing is simply out of my hands and my patience wears thin.

Manga is usually less censored as well and kinda leaves me with a sense of a more genuine and accurate interpretation. It feels like there is less restrictions and more freedom, even if this simply is not true (I can't really say because I don't know the process of printing this stuff, but it does feel that way as a reader).
