This is probably a dumb question but I don't want to get in trouble for torrenting a shit ton of anime. I know torrenting copyrighted material is illegal in most countries, but here it has Vuze on the list, which is a torrenting program. I live in the Netherlands if that matters btw.

EDIT: Ok so what I have gotten from the comments is that it is illegal but nobody gives a shit, unless you upload a ton of illegal torrents. BREIN (Dutch copyright protection organization) also stated that they don't give a shit if you download even though it is illegal, they only care about hosters/distributers. (The EU forced them to make downloading pirated torrents illegal iirc) Does this mean I shouldn't seed?

ye torrenting is usually illegal since there is no legal torrent service for anime anyway

open source softwares like libreoffice and open source games do provide legal torrent download for their products though

Yeah Vuze is really the odd one out on that list. Maybe there are some legal anime torrents but idk any

Anyway, it might be illegal, that's up for you to read the dutch legislation. You could search for reports of dutch people getting "caught" torrenting i guess.. i can sorta guarantee that if it ever happened, it was for recent multibillion shit or local productions, not chinese cartoons

I'd say that unless you start a big hosting/distribution site, extremely likely no one's gonna care if you download a shit ton of anime.

Its their own fault though for not providing enough good quality reach legally .. You can't get all anime in top quality just anywhere .. Even if you do it does not come cheap..

Of course it's illegal but real threat depends on your location.

I don't know how copyright laws work in Netherlands but here in Russia probably 99,9% of Internet users use torrent without any consequences whatsoever.

No torrenting anime is not illegal at all. The companies just create this illusion that torrenting is illegal so that you pay for their living, and have a sense of guilt.

Ah, seeding ~ the millennia old conundrum; usually I'd say the same thing applies ~ chinese cartoons should be very low on the priority list of the anti-piracy business.
But a short google indicates that BREIN in particular "Declared Anime Fan-Subs Illegal" in April 2017; while unlikely to be enforced, they do seem to have anime on their visor, so you might want to not seed dutch subs or CR rips... though even so, they'd still go for the uploaders first. Since it's a recent development, even if there are no consequences so far, it's too early to tell how serious they are but my prediction is "not very".

torrenting it self isn't illegal, but data that provided and the provider is the one that usually illegal... if the maker legitemaly put it on torrent, then it's legal...

however, anime torrenting is mainly illegal... it doesn't really enforced tho, at least, if you are simply downloading...

back to torrenting doujin in my room...

Unless you're downloading one of ADV's old preview torrents, yes, it is illegal.

Does anyone give a shit? Unless you're downloading a HorribleSubs release of Naruto/One Piece/Gintama, no. Those are the three I've heard people get letters from their ISP for.

Torrenting is illegal as it's a form of piracy. It doesn't matter what you torrent.

Streaming is also illegal unless you stream from a paid service such as Crunchyroll.

IMHO, recording a public TV-aired anime and distributing it should be legal. Whilst the blueray/DVD copies are the ones that should be illegal since these are not available for free in the first place.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case with EU ruling.

Distributing pirated content is illegal.

While downloading a torrent, you are also uploading (no matter how miniscule it might be even if you throttle/ choke the upload rate) and so you are part of the distribution.

Streaming is also illegal if the underlying mechanism is torrent-based, involving your upstream. (not common/ I don't know of an example of an anime site that does this)

Technically yes, but if you torrent something that isn't licensed in your country, then it's sort of a loophole, because you can't legally buy it even if you wanted to.

Torrenting only isn't illegal if you own the original copy. Just the same way that pirating games is only legal if you own the disc.

Everything on my list is torrented or directly downloaded and is on my computer. I also found the logins for 20 premium accounts someone gave away for one of the private anime trackers. The first one I tried worked! I assume the others do as well.

I've never heard of anyone being pinned for torrenting anime. Sometimes people get done for downloading GoT or new movies, as the guys behind these sometimes track to torrents and note down all the IPs. Basically it's all technically illegal (based on a shit technicality as Red_Tuesday explained), but you're more likely to get a warning letter for downloading mainstream western movies/shows.

Short answer: Yes, it is illegal.

Long answer: Yes, it is illegal. There's really no grey area. Torrenting anime is 100% illegal. No ifs ands or buts. Anyone telling your there's a grey area is either lying or making excuses. And no, there's nothing "technical" about this illegality. It's just illegal. However:

I just want to add that everything on my list is softsubbed, too. Even the hentai. It was hard to track down some of these mkv files. That private tracker had softsubbed mkv files for some of them, and hardsubbed mp4 files for others when I needed softsubbed for all.

If you didn't pay for anime torrents/downloads it's illegal, and if you did, it's probably stolen property anyway on some shady website, since anime isn't usually distributed that way, so it's still illegal and you got ripped off too.

Legal domestic physical media releases like DVD and BD are the primary way anime is distributed and legal domestic streaming and the occasional local television broadcast are the only legal means to watch it. Assuming that a distribution company has purchased the license from the Japanese copyright holder to release, stream, or broadcast that series in your country that is.

If your country doesn't have any of that for the title you want than you either have to do it illegally or not at all in order to watch it.

Not necessarily. Different countries have different laws about it. Some will prosecute you for both uploading and downloading you know.

It's certainly illegal. Most anime we saw wasn't meant to be marketed out of Japan, at least the most recent releases and if it was, it was distributed through very limited and very specific way, which is never torrent. Using torrent is automatically distribution of pirated records, software or whatever.

Some countries can have pretty strict laws about content too which means, yay, additional offences.

Whether you should do it, well, technically I should always say "no" to the question as otherwise it is incitement to committing something illegal which is also an offence.

If its public domain anime then its legal to torrent. If you have the permission of the copyright holder then it is legal to torrent.

Torrents are basically files that you download from several sources at once. Those sources are others who've downloaded the torrent and are seeding (uploading) it. If only few people seed a torrent, it's going to be slow as hell. Your internet speed also plays a role, of course it does, but usually, torrents with a decent amount of seeders are faster than direct downloads.

Take for instance an episode of anime. Depending on where the site is hosted, it can take 7 to 15 minutes to download a single mp4 of 280 megabytes as direct download.
The same episode in better quality, thus with bigger file size, takes me only 2 minutes as a torrent, as long as there's enough seeders.

Basically,if it's a new anime you're watching or if the anime is a popular mainstream series, torrenting is the way to go.

The only thing you need is to download bittorrent or utorrent, download the torrent file for whatever show you want to watch and open it in your torrent program. thats it
It's okay to smirk

yeah
but piracy is the jaywalking of internet illegalities, as long as you don't get caught doing too much seeding to the point where it pisses off your isp, you'll be fine.
