What are some popular anime that are well known among casual fans?

First of all, I know that casual can come off as sort of an insult. I apologize for that, it's not my intention. I just am at a loss for a better term for someone that doesn't watch a lot of anime. If you can give me a better example, please do so.

Also, please, don't overthink this topic.

Let's say I wanna get a group of people to check out some some lesser known stuff, but I wanna start em off with some more popular stuff to not scare em off, but stay away from stuff that's currently running What would you suggest?

Edit: This is what I've got so far.

SAO

Fairy Tail

gurren lagann

Akame ga Kill!

Tokyo Ghoul

Dragon Ball

Naruto

Bleach

One Punch Man

Cowboy Bebop

Hunter X Hunter (2011)

Fate Series

Attack on titan

Wondering if these would work:

Black Bullet

Black Lagoon

Tokyo Ghoul

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

No Game No Life

Elfen Lied

Fairy Tail

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Noragami

Highschool of the Dead

Kill la Kill

Don't listen to people when they tell you that the anime that you want to see doesn't exist, and to quit asking, and quit searching. I found my dream anime, and yours could be out there too. Speaking of which, watch Record Of Grancrest War, you're missing out.

I thrive on fantasy anime, and anime with all adult casts!

That's entirely voted on by anime fans with mal accounts so it wouldn't be entirely accurate

Ex. one piece is probably way higher than ranked 30th in popularity among non/casual-anime fans

Yeah, it doesn't help. I for example BARELY remember what Angel Beats is, and I've seen over 100 titles.

Edit: actually, I take it back. it's a good start with some of these options, Didn' t think of Tokyo ghoul for example.

What does that have to do with popularity? I've seen thousands of titles and I remember exactly what AB was about.

That list is exactly what you asked for. Disregard the ranking, and any title "casuals" can name will be in the first few pages. It does give more weight to older titles though.

You could probably put anything that aired for a significant period of time on Toonami or Adult Swim on the list. Obvious examples like Sailor Moon, Inuyasha, and Yu Yu Hakusho are going to be known to people even if they've never watched anime. Death Note seems to be quite well known and the upcoming live action is only going to add to that. Everyone knows about Miyazaki movies.

I think your approach is fundamentally silly, though. If a person isn't watching anime it's probably because that person isn't interested in the few popular anime they know about. Those popular anime are often very different from obscure shows anyway, so it isn't even going to prepare them for anything. Hundreds of episodes of shounen arcs probably scare more people away than a handful of weird obscure episodes. Frankly I'd just start them off with the lesser known stuff, unless it's Tatami Galaxy in which case I'd start them off with a speed reading course.

I'd take out Elfen Lied for general newcomers and/or casuals. It's graphic as hecky. Gore, decapitation, and nudity are common.

Black Lagoon 2nd season is pretty gnarly (at the start) too, but I'd say the 1st season is a good choice for newcomers who are used to action shows.

"Popularity" depends on age/location I think.

When talking about "popular casual shows" - these ones are pretty common/"casual" here →
Mobile Suit Gundam Series. [Especially Seed/Wing]
To Aru Majutsu no Index.
Toradora.
Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu.
Code Geass.
Bakemonogatari.
Kemono no Souja Erin.

Edit: OH. I almost forgot Touch. This one's pretty important.

If I have to make an assumption from the items I've seen more in manganime cons (in Spain at least) I would say:

Madoka Magica, Elfen Lied, Mirai Nikki, Kuroshitsuji, Shingeki no Kyojin, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Berserk, Hellsing (less than the others but here it is), Death Note, Danganronpa (mostly Monokuma), SAO, OPM, TTGL, Dragon Ball, FMA, NGE, Kuroko no Basket, Slam Dunk (mostly Rukawa and Hanamichi shirts), Tokyo Ghoul. Probably some more but I can't recall right now. Edit: Ok, some HxH, Sailor Moon and a lil bit of YYH. Edit2: A big bunch of things from Haikyuu!! too.

The last con gave me war flashbacks... no Gundam... there wasn't any Gundam to buy... manganime con without Gundam... what the hell.......

Sailor Moon is usually known. It may be due to the (unofficial) merch that has been getting released more these days. But i've seen a lot of non anime watchers and casual watchers-watch it. Sometimes it's word of mouth, but other times it's due to some kind of chance encounter with the series.

I actually watched HSOtD a couple years before I got into anim , the idea of highschool and zombies really fits into that casual field, but yes the fan service was kind of daunting at the time lol.

I think the approach is not necessarily the best; you should take into account who you are presenting these anime shows to.
Judging by your birthday - fellow residents in the home for the aged you stay in? Or to that hot elderly-care nurse?

Like, Akame ga Kill is a surefire way to drive some people away from anime/ reassuring them anime has nothing of worth to offer.

Same is probably true for other titles in your list.
Naruto ? How many million episodes do you want to show them? That number alone should scare some away.

Really, I think it might be better to find something non-anime they agree to like, and then find some anime on that basis.
Like - maybe you lot like to go fishing - there must be anime about/with fishing that is not completely bad.
Maybe there are lots of fantasy RPG players in the group? Then Konosuba is a show that anime casuals can easily approach. Come to think of it - you don't really need to be a fantasy-RPG-player to watch the show ...
But it has occasional jiggly-breasts, that might tick off some viewers. (no nudity though)

EDIT: Oh, and what about dub/sub ? Would they even be willing to watch sth. subbed ?

Ones that a lot of my non-anime fan friends have at least heard of are:

*Attack on Titan
*One Piece
*Death Note
*Bleach
*Sword Art Online
*DBZ
*Tokyo Ghoul
*One Punch Man
*Black Butler (pretty surprising, I know. I wonder if this is just bc I live in the UK lol. Can someone please tell me if Black Butler is generally well known outside of the anime community in their country? I'm curious!)

A recent addition would be JoJo's Bizarre Adventure which sorta crawled out of Japan's wood work, becoming near by mainstream in the West (especially where I am)...mainly bc of the DiU anime, I guess. Now almost everyone I know knows who bloody Speedwagon, Jotaro Kujo, and Dio Brando are.

I'm aware of that. But seems like I did not express myself properly.
I was "listing" shows that are popular among people who are "casuals" [I will never come to like this word.] or usually non-anime watchers. [But I was listing shows that are popular among Japanese "casuals" since I can't speak for western people.]
Also I did not list shows - that were already listed in the OP.

I grew up in a pretty small town in the USA, and literally the only (outspoken) anime fans I encountered were some girls who absolutely adored things like Black Butler, Hetalia, Death Note and Naruto. In fact, when I joined MAL, I was kind of surprised by how infrequently Black Butler gets brought up considering it was one of the few things I heard people off the internet talk about~

OT: I'm gonna second the guy that said there is no universal anime that will help you get people into anime. Try starting with things they're interested in and go from there, otherwise you might just end up putting them off the medium by using something that's "popular" (and usually, by extension, highly controversial).

I also think you shouldn't rule out more recently aired things, since those shows have a lot of hype surrounding them and might seem more relevant/exciting to people who are just starting to get into the medium.

In this case, I recommend not trying to recommend famous or popular anime, and instead look for accessible anime. Meaning anime that gives no problems to casuals and outsiders.
Someone who doesn't watch a lot of anime is more likely to take your advice than to watch something he/she has already heard about. Discuss what they like, give them some good recommendations, and they will gladly try things you recommend to them.

Speaking of your list, gurren lagann is the same anime as Tengen Toppa Gurenn Lagann. Pretty solid choice for somebody who has watched some mecha already, but no guarantees with casuals. You might want to show it after Neon Genesis Evangelion, for contrast.

I don't think Black Bullet is well-known. It is also kind of dark, with child soldiers, discrimination and lolicon, so recommend it to others at your own peril.
Elfen Lied is well-known. For being damn dark and definitely not for children. Likewise, use at your own peril.
Fairy Tail might not be good enough to appeal to people, and the same can be said about Noragami.

And keep in mind that Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail and other shows like Pokemon are famous, but terribly long-running (hundreds of episodes), so it might be hard to get anybody to commit to watching that much.

Ghost in the shell is becoming more well known following the whole hollywood movie adaption people are looking into the anime or at least know its based on that anime

A big contributor to what anime casuals know is Netflix. My friends that don't watch anime usually use it to learn what anime is because its easily accessible on a platform they are already using to watch normal shows ^^

If you're the type that likes drama and fiction grounded in reality (yes, FICTION in REALITY) I suggest ERASED.

ReLIFE is also recommended if you like about of romance. (maybe)

Fairy Tail might not be a good watch unless you are a huge fan of people using superpowers to punch a bunch of other people and monsters in the face. Also, some of the arcs make it seem like you've wasted your time (FT's about 280-290 eps long)

Noragami does seem like the perfect anime for the "casual watcher" but it can be confusing at times.

(And of course Naruto is recommended for those with enough time to spare to watch 500 episodes, each of almost 25 minutes)

There's no Death Note and One Piece on your list, and no Ghibli movies either.

But keep in mind that popular/mainstream stuff might not be the best way to get people into anime. Sometimes it's better to show them that anime can be very different from what they expect and know about it from TV and general pop culture. It depends on their general taste of course, but mainstream titles tend to only represent a few types of shows (your whole list is basicann shounen/seinen/action) that do have a wide appeal, but are generally limited in scope and won't appeal to a certain amount of the population. Action, stylish teenager designs, powerups, One Punch Man memes etc... are already in the public conscious related to anime and see it live up to all these clichés might turn some people off if they've been wary of anime based on these things.

Casuals also have MAL accounts. Tens or Hundred of Thousands even. That's why all the casual, mainstream shows are on the top

And One Piece is probably the most popular anime in some countries (like where I live) but in others (like america and it's huge population) it's overshadowed by other titles, even moreso in recent years. And most casuals from the last 5 years or so won't bother to start Naruto, but they will have seen all the SAOs and Attack on Titans and OPMs out there because they're much shorter and newer. For quite some time One Piece has been known by everyone but not many people start to get into it at this point because of how long it is and because of the reputation of it being slow and everyone recommending the manga over the anime (where it is above Attack on Titan at #3). So I think it's pretty accurate still.
I probably regret this post by now.

Well it's really a matter of preference in the end but I guess you could always give the unholy trinity for anyone into action: bleach, naruto, one piece.
Drama/romance: clannad, myself;yourself
Mature: ghost in the shell, GTO
Comedy: danshi koukousei no ichijou (daily life of high school boys)
Throw in a couple of ghibli movies for good measure and I think your good to go.
