Take for example

Did their popularity skyrocket because they died? I mean, they were likable when they were alive but after death they somehow became more like legends and waaay more likable.
for me even
is really awesome even though he didn't have much screen time and only appeared in the flashbacks.

I'm talking about the good guys of course. No one cares if the villain dies.

No, the AAST girl from Mars of Destruction isn't popular.

Actually no, fanbases just love to exeggarate the death of le best character, because it´s "oh so sadu". All of these characters were liked before their death. Popularity skyrocketing is nothing more than a reaction to one event in the storyline (similarly to plot twists, finales, whatever).

Also, the only death that got to me out of your examples was the Whitebeard one. He´s literally that extreme, that he won´t die, even if he fucking dies. Epic as fuck, motherfucker.

Just like in real life death grants a boost in empathy for them.

Well that depends on the character itself. If the character was a piece of shit then good riddance. Now if it was an MC or good guy that died, it'd be sad but it wouldnt make them more likeable.

Depends on the execution of the death, really.

Meh, not really. I mean in most cases anime don't even revisit the character after the character dies. So if the character was super likable before their death, it's that time with the character that made them likable not the fact that they died. It's like what @AnimeXHunter said - it's the fanbases that do it because the death was just so saaaaaaaad.

you are wrong, it is popular for comedic purposes... atleast on MoD "fans" LOL

that aside, its pretty hard to like more a character when it dies, i guess its depending on how HEROIC or what he did to die, for Example
or how much it resembles to the story even if it is dead trough the rest of the series

there might be times when you dislike a character but it redeems itself when doing some sort of "Heroic Action" or is just that his death is unfair or sad...
