So I recently started watching Stiens;Gate and for the first time ever I have actually seen product placement in anime, other than that its usually some weird name change. Do Manga Publishers and Anime Distributers fear a lawsuit from using a trademark? Wouldn't it be better for the company if an anime use actual trademark? If more animes started doing this, would it ruin the experience for you? Also if you have seen other trademarks in anime leave a picture and the anime that its in |

| I actually think it's pretty common in anime... I don't usually notice objects as much but I tend to notice like fastfood chains or maybe something like "Google" and such. It's probably cheaper and faster (for production purposes) to just do like a parody name than to get the trademark/licensing whatever. I don't mind it at all and find it funny sometimes, the name twists they come up with. | when you see something you can relate to in real life, it tends to draw your attention. Seems like that exactly what the writers are aiming at, of course combined with the parodying that can be seen as a form of humour. when executed well and not overdone, like in stein's i actually sort of like it. If the anime is filled with it to the point it overshadows the plot i think its starts becoming disruptive and should be considered toxic |

| This happens all the time in anime. I guess as long as they alter the names, it isn't much of a problem. EXAMPLES!: In Joshiraku: The Online shopping site is called "Jungle", referring to "Amazon" In Hataraku Maou-sama: The protagonist works at a place called "MgRonalds", referring to "McDonalds". In Carnival Phantasm: A battery is called "Enerloop", referring to the "Eneloop" battery brand. And in Persona 3 (specifically the games) if you check the vending machines, the drinks are named after some iconic drinks such as: Dr. Salt (Dr. Pepper) Nastea (Nestea) Moonkist (Sunkist) However, there are some anime that actually do use real names of popular products, stores, and companies. This is usually associated with high-budget anime and movies though and is intentionally done because of sponsorship. I do recall an anime (forgot which one) that had the convenience store named "LAWSON", which is the actual name of a chain of convenience stores located all throughout Japan (LAWSON STATION). Sometimes product placement is intentional to show what companies sponsored an anime. A good example is the very recent movie by Square Enix: Kingsglaive FFXV where the car used in the movie is made by an actual car company... I don't mind the product placements, but I do find it funny when they do show. I guess it's to take a break from all the craziness that happens in the anime. It's what we call a "parody". |

In the VN for Steins;Gate the characters never flat out say Dr.Pepper either they just say Dr.P. I don't think I've ever seen an animu that flat out had real name brands in them. I would rather go to Wcdonalds than McDonalds anyways |

| Pretty sure a lot of sports anime have product placements. Like Haikyuu was sponsored by Mikasa and if I'm not mistaken there were times they wore Reebok shoes. Yuri from Yuri on Ice wore a blue Mizuno jacket. Not sure if that was an actual product placement or not. |

| Bartender is a twelve-episode advertisement for well-known liquors, all mentioned by name. I suspect the individual trademark owners may not have sold them the rights, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear a trade association was involved. After Bartender, the first product placement i noticed was for a vitamin water in Hataraki Man. You'll see it a few seconds into the opening: Nike underwrote part of Basquash!. You'll see the swoosh in the opening credits. And, of course, all the characters wear Nikes. |

| Sometimes there's definitely product placement like Pizza Hut in Code Geass. In that picture you showed they replaced the r in Dr on Dr. Pepper, they also changed the IBM 5100 into a IBN 5100 and slightly altered it's design by swapping various controls and the screen around on it from it's real world counterpart. Despite it being an ancient computer the IBM brand is still around. I think they just try to make all the products in anime look as realistic as possible without having lawsuit problems so they will slightly alter the logo or something. I was watching one anime once and some character started using a computer and I though my media player had suddenly minimized for a second, then I realized that the icons on there computer were slightly off from a real Windows Computer. In many animes I've seen many real cars just with there logo altered or removed altogether and characters going to various fast food restaurants or drinking something and the logos are altered by one letter or so or something even flipped upside down, I saw one anime with a upside down McDonlads logo once. |
| It'd be less amusing, as while it's a novelty to see product placement right now, too much of it could make it all kind of crappy. But hey, I ended up loving Dr Pepper because of S;G, so maybe companies might actually do something like that intentionally one day. |

Yes, this potentially still could lead to lawsuit, but generally it will be a dead case from the start, so nobody really bothers with it. And in that ANN thread they mentioned "Gogol Empire", like it's a parody on "Google". Actually I think they wrong. I'm sure that it's a parody on Kamen Rider. They also mentioned Black Lagoon manga, but, what is even more funny, totally forgot to mention that there was real songs presented, complete with lyrics and singer's/band's names, which were completely removed in anime (and replaced by other, almost equally epic music, but still no cookie). Which leads us to another quite interesting case. As far as I understand, when it comes to manga, and especially light novels, copyright laws seems to be a little lighter than for anime. For example, in Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai LN they really used actual Eva00 unit and Gundam names, while in anime it was changed to usual parodying Bland Names. Which, if you think about it, is quite understandable. You can get away with other's copyrights when you're just starting (all of mentioned above - music & beer in Black Lagoon and mechas in BokuTomo - was in first chapters) - manga market is mainly Japanese, and not even every Japanese read manga, and light novels market is even lesser. But when your product getting so big that it's receiving an animesation - then you need to go all legal, because it's getting a far bigger audience and can even go international. In the end, it's come down to how much you must pay for using copyrighted material. BTW, the same lax approach can be seen case of "questionable content" - in manga and especially light novels, it's much easier to discover smoking and drinking - including underage - as well as nudity (i.e. visible nipples), as in corresponding animesations, talking about censorship. |

Japanese copyright law has no concept of "fair use" like the United States has. However we are talking about trademarks here, and many of the trademarks being discussed are owned by Western, often American, companies. That said, I'm sure trademark owners would also object to seeing their marks used in anime without compensation. |
