Man, this arc is definitely reinforcing Dezaki as my favourite anime director. Goes to show how talented he was.

That's a tragic development.

It seems like that out of guilt Joe lost his fighting spirit.

Joe remembering the past with Rikiishi, realizing how important he was to him, the only person that really treated Joe as someone normal, the closest to him, feels and more feels.

This episode shad the light on how complex the rivalry between Joe and Rikiishi is. love and hate intertwined together, making it hard to define their relationship by using one word only. as a rival, Joe hates Rikiishi more than anything. but as a person, Rikiishi gave a meaning to Joe's life. so in a way, one can say that Joe love Rikiishi more than anything. that's magnificent writing, right there.
Also, Osamu Dezaki did a remarkable job here, too.

Falling into a depression blaming himself for the death of Rikiishi, Joe, thinking that he must return to the streets, where he came from and where he should never leave... But that is not entirely true...

Man, that scene when Joe says that Rikiishi was everything to him, and that it was like a father figure or an older brother, damn, the feelings hitting me again and with more power... Impressive the way they animated this episode to express perfectly to Joe.

The song of Rikiishi continues giving chills.

Joe on a self-journey to figure everything out; a tragic self-journey. Well, I'm not surprised that he's blaming himself, while it was objectively due to Joe that Rikiishi died, it was just boxing, you gotta punch in boxing, stuff like that happens, it was more like Rikiishi died because of boxing and not Joe in specific.

Honestly, I'm damn glad those assholes beat Joe up, otherwise Joe would've actually murdered them...

This episode solidified Ashita no Joe as being art like no other to me. Dezaki is excellent. Holy shit!!! Quite a neglected anime if you ask me.. I wish more people would watch this.

I understand it was intended as a joke, but it would have been free if he had not been beat up afterwards

Finally an episode without those annoying brats, and it just so happens to be one of the more decent ones

What an amazing episode. The last 10 or so of this series really have been incredible. I was kinda disappointed for a while but the actual boxing and the character writing of Joe in particular has improved a lot. Seems the trauma from Riikishi's death has brought out a very sentimental side of him that perhaps even he didn't know he had before due to all the years he spent alone. Although I don't know how high I'll be able to rate s1 with all it's warts, I am extremely excited for s2. And yeah, as others have said, Dezaki's work on this show has been truly next level.

Joe and Rikiishi's dynamic wasn't explored nearly as much as needed for me to find Joe's behavior in this episode to be believable.
