Let me rephrase that:
When reading a certain character's line in a certain manga(Not out loud of course) do you use your own voice, do you use someone else's voice or do you come up with an entirely different one?
For example, whenever I was reading Steel Ball Run, for some reason I always read Gyro's lines using Solid Snake's voice and Johnny's lines using Otacon's.
So which voices do you guys use and which characters do you think could benefit from a VA recast?

This is a good question to think about, especially if you are only reading the manga instead of an anime. Usually if it's like that, I'll make up one that might fit the character, or use an actual VA in my head. ouo

Most of the time I just use generic voices. Can't really describe it any differently than that. If I watch the anime first then I tend to imagine them with the voices used in the anime. When I was reading Kyoukai no Rinne (before the anime came out) I was actually using the voices from Inuyasha since the characters kinda look alike.

So which voices do you guys use and which characters do you think could benefit from a VA recast?

Shiragami from Jitsu wa Watashi wa. Her voice actress made her sound kinda like a little kid. Not anywhere near how I imagined she would sound.

I kinda get what you guys are getting at when it comes to characters with established VAs but trying to read English sentences with the Japanese voices feel entirely out of place so unless the VA's voice fits the English version I tend to use voices of well known English speaking VAs and I try different ones till I find the one that fits the most.

A voice that I think matches the character will just develop in my mind as I read.

Reading Shingetsutan Tsukihime, I imagined a very distinct voice for Arcueid; though after watching the anime adaptation, I can't even remember what it sounded like.

Finding the voice you think fits perfectly and then the anime screws it up for you is a real downer.

Hmmm. I don't actually use voices when reading. Is it weird ?

About recast, I think that king kaioh from Dragon Ball Super would be really benefit from one.

For those of you that don't use voices but instead use your own, I don't think that's weird, but personally I think it makes the manga kind of dull. It would feel kind of unnatural. Like I'm narrating more than reading, making it a very uncomfortable experience. I just think that adding different voices to the characters adds more personality to each of them.
Even if I try to read using my own voice I just end up shifting back to a different one without noticing.
And the whole speaking out loud thing isn't what I meant when I first posted this. I just meant imagining the voices.

I like to inmate the voice of women from hardcore porn videos, when I read manga. It's hilarious.

A voice-actor would be my dream job, so I always read them aloud. I read the boys lines in my normal voice, just a bit rougher, but I vary the girls a whole lot more, usually by how high their voice is or certain speech impediments they could have.

For example, when I was reading Madoka Magica, Madoka had a high, somewhat scratchy voice, Sayaka had a high but smooth voice, and Mami had a normal pitched and smooth voice. Kyubey's voice was high but casual, so it didn't sound strained or anything. Why am I telling you this?

This is actually getting more interesting than I expected. It's nice to know some people actually voice the characters or even use porn for reference.

Depends. Most of the time I don't inner vocalize at all, but in some scenes (especially if it's a big discussion or something) I almost act out the scene in front of my computer. Reading all the lines in this epic voice XD

I make up a voice for them depending on their personality and the way they appear to talk, even if I watched the anime I usually still use the voice I made up when I go back to reading.

recent example

ReLife
Yoake.. when I heard his voice in the anime I went like "what!? no! he doesn't sound like that! Yoake has a calmer voice!" lol

I read in english and don't really understand japanese but when I read the voice in my head is japanese

If you don't like Kaneki there's a 90 percent chance you didn't read the manga.

If the manga was adapted into an anime and that anime got a dub that I watched I will read it in the dub voices. If not, I will either read it in the voices of dub actors I think suit the characters or read it in whatever voices my mind makes up. I always read manga in English but I tend to watch anime in Japanese so it's a bit weird.

This casual dropping of bombs must stop... Hey, are u infact a member of some terrorist group? i mean, u are dropping too many bombs across too many threads

anyway OT : Yeah.. A voice, according to the personality of the character just pops up in my head when i read a manga.

And as some1 else said, when i heard Yoake's voice in the ReLIFE anime, I had the exact same reaction.. like 'I imagined a more timid and calmer voice' .. Sometimes the voice actually fits great though, like even Kaizaki from the same anime has an extremely suitable voice IMO.

I just use my own voice when reading anything. I feel like using different voices could distract me from what I'm reading and/or make me read much slower than usual.

I'm also slightly dyslexic, so I don't need to add any more hurdles to reading. :)

I like to have a quiet atmosphere while reading so no voices at all. But if its a short-comedic Manga, I just read it out loud with a voice that might fit with that character. That ends once the mood changes, however.

I understand what most of you are saying and I can relate to it. Having heard the japanese dub then trying to use it in English sentences feels very unnautral and distracting, so in my case I end up switching voices without even realizing it.

I use the voices from the anime if I've seen it dubbed. If not, I either use my own voice or some other anime voice. Sometimes if there's a character I find annoying, I use a really whiny gay voice (no offense) which makes it more fun to read those lines.

Nice to have you join the conversation. I tend to do the same with characters that I find annoying or characters that I hate such as the main villains where I subconciously give them this cringy type of voice and that can get really distracting at times.

Typically I go with the voices I've imagined for the characters, but if I'm reading something I've also watched dubbed then I may rely on the voices the cast provided instead. Both ways are fun.

If I've seen anime based on the manga, the answer is obvious.

If not, I just imagine some seiyuu I love, who would fit main characters, and sometime imagine how they'd say certain lines in Japanese :D It's fun.

There have been times that I look up the dub to hear the actual voice just so I can replicate that while reading. This proves super useful for manga whose anime I don't watch (Naruto, One Piece, Bleach) or even light novels (Haruhi).

In the event that it doesn't exist, I do one of 3 things.

(1) Cast it in my head with existing English VAs
(2) Try to do a one-for-one seiyuu-English mapping if possible (I somehow can do it with Saori Hayami and Hiroshi Kamiya)
(3) Make up a headcanon voice.

Eh?
Lol, I usually do just read out loud and change my voice to fit the characters personality/how I imagine they'd sound appearance wise as well as much as I can, usually knowing that it won't fit 100%. I have so much fun reading manga yo.

If there's a voice I just really don't feel like doing, I'll just imagine the voice I'd expect without attempting it.
Whenever I hear the voices chosen, I usually remember my attempts and think, "Thank gosh, it fits more than my role, lol".

If there's no anime yet or I have not seen the anime yet , an automatic voice reads in my head. Perhaps what my head subconsciously thinks the voice is like. I think it gets cues from the character, the character design, the genre, and the lines themselves.

But if I've watched the anime, the seiyuus' voices, as much as my head can reproduce and imagine.
