I personally think that in general, anime is objectifying all women. But if you think about it, the primary reason for this is that women are being objectified in the society in the first place. To some extent, anime takes on the preferences of the audience, who already perceives an objectified view of women, so in order to satisfy the audiences, the anime industry tends to comply to the audience's demands. And yes, the same goes for other stakeholders like men, food and cats, so in the end, it doesn't really matter. And yes, I do agree that the petition was stupid.
A retard is trying to prove his point, thanks.

i'm pretty sure the point of the art style of anime is generally to make everything more beautified compared to its real world counterparts although there are exceptions among the elite and it does vary from series to series, so by that logic pretty much everyone and everything is somehow objectified, not just women

It really depends on the series and on how the character is depicted. But it's not only women that are being ''objectified''.
Well, if you really want to find ''objectified'' women then just watch ecchi/harem anime.

People see what they want to see.
If they want to see women being objectified in order to justify their victim complex, that's how they'll alter their reality.

I just watch anime to have a good time, that's all.

Here's what it is: Showing someone half naked and portraying them as sexually attractive doesn't diminish the value they hold in context to the story.
Objectification is when the sole reason for their existence is to please the viewer of the opposite sex..

It depends on what kind of anime you are watching, but there are definitely double standards. However, there are so many different types of characters out there so the answer for me is a no.

Am I allowed to ask why you only add BL-titles? I don't see the reason why you would not add all kinds of anime o.o

All other anime is gutter trash that objectifies women. You, me and the vast majority of this website are going to hell for watching it.

Always interesting seeing my own posts from ages ago. My opinion has not changed, all anime other than Boys Love is gutter trash. If anyone wants some recs, my fav BL anime are DRAMAtical Murder, Togainu no Chi and LOGH.

But this is a discussion board, so I will humor the disgusting perverts who watch non-BL anime for now. What anime objectifies women the most, probably harems right? Well, there are multiple ways at looking at this. Your average "trashy harem" hate sink has a variety of interesting and distinctive girls and one plain guy. These girls have personalities, this guy often does not. These girls with personalities all try and "win" the guy, as though he's a trophy. The guy only exists as a "prize" to be one by girls. Conclusion: Harems are disgusting anime that objectify and dehumanize men.

Thank god for anime man...

Yes, it DOES objectify women....or better said, artistic DEPICTIONS of women.

And it caters to men.

GOOD!!!

I want my anime girls to look good, because I'm male and I'm attracted to good looking females.

Japan (thankfully) is a CAPITALISTIC SOCIETY and therefore they will do whatever brings them capital (money) and what sells better than hot sexy girls???

If feminazis had their way we'd have ugly, hairy, and man-hating female characters in a wide variety of anime...

And before anyone quotes me to tell me shit....anime also objectify male characters and as a male I'm perfectly fine with that.

The truth is almost all characters are very good looking and they are made to cater to us (the audience) and we like it that way.

Obviously, some do, but definitely not all of them.

I'm pretty sure there's a certain anime genre which is really good at portraying women as objects and might be the main cause for the controversy.

Still, I rarely see any objectification of women in the anime series I watch, thus it is not present everywhere and is probably limited, in general, to certain genres of anime.

Besides, if you're a moviegoer, you surely know that women are often objectified in movies and those have a lot more people watching and enjoying them than there is anime fans. And, as far as I know, it doesn't seem to be much of an issue in our society, but, maybe I'm wrong.

Plus, I don't want to get into details and make this long, but just take a look at which anime genres are available and you'll quickly realize that it's also a double standard. Though, I'm pretty sure there is way more objectification of women than men, but it's most certainly something that happens to both genders.

Making theads that get a couple of pages of responses is craft. Just say something controversial.
Making a thread like this in an art. You have to consider timing, you have to use just the right words to promote misunderstanding ("objectify" is a great one - nobody knows what it really means), you have to choose the topic right...

That's one thing I like a lot about anime. How can people watch those cartoons about ugly characters like Simpsons?

It's not equal when in every single example men are the ones with the power, and if women exist they are for the sake of men. All of them implicity endorse patriarchy which isn't surprising given Japanese culture.

Objectification doesn't have to be the same for each gender, they can differ but still be objectification. That's like saying racism isn't equal because we say Jews are cheap bastards while Asians have squinty eyes and can't drive. They differ but are still racist.

You want examples of women in power in anime? Look down below.

Akatsuki no Yona, Seirei no Moribito, Tonari no Kaibutsu Kun, Witch Hunter Robin, Black Lagoon, Claymore, Toaru Kagaku no Railgun/S, Ghost in the Shell, Kino no Tabi and many many more.

Out of those, most of them are the men being protected or lead by the women protagonist.

Although it is true that Japan is a sexist country like most of Asia, there are plenty of strong females in the medium.

Meanwhile they powerful remember that some people prefer personality. True about that anime you show is female have some power but they lack some willed not to mention some female character your post is they to easy to overcome challange.

The best i can think is Akatsuki no yona , Claymore , Seirei no morihibito because they have some strong willed female who is trying overcome challange. Toaru Kagako raikgun is good too but sadly after the show is end Mikoto suddenly become more useless and touma who take all of problem not to mention she join touma harem what make me blame author.

Note: Anime with current female main protagonist never can be popular compare to male protagonist because in every year anime with male protagonist more majority than female main protagonist

I think it depends on the anime and the character herself.

Some anime have some really strong, intelligent and likeable female characters. However, in other anime the girls are clearly just there for fanservice.

Once again, people operate with some weird definition of "personality".
Do you really thing women of Black Lagoon don't have personalities? Do you think "Major" Motoko Kusanagi doesn't have a personality?
Misaka Mikoto doesn't lose her personality just because Touma helps her out. She helps him out too, you know.
She doesn't lose her personality by being romantically interested in Touma too. Her personality when he's not present fits her "tsundere" personality when he's around just fine.

Popularity isn't something that can be achieved with sheer numbers.

It's true that in shonen animes, most girls are weak and need to be protected, and all their role is to be beautiful. Though in shoujo it's a bit different. Yes, they may depend on the guy, but it also works the other way around or the guy is richer so he has the advantage.
If you're looking for anime who tries your change the rules (not competetly as it's alternative history and in history men had more importance) and is not shoujo (seinen), watch tears to Tiara.

In modern action films, I see females who have little personality but shoot guns a little. In anime, even if the characters' main purpose is to be sexy they have a personality. Even in a harem, at least tsundere/kuudere are character archetypes.

Visit the thread and you'll see that it's a definite no.

However, to conclude a debate.

Technically "anime" is an object/art so if the question is to define that terminology, then anime "objectifies" any/everything we see in anime.

Talks about "objectification" from a point of view as I mentioned the technical aspect, but that's what it is.

A point of view.

This is an stupid petition. This won't change a thing. Anime Companies will still continue putting out perverted anime. Nothing will stop it. Japan is one of the bigger countries doing so. They are into all the taboo things. And just so you know, all kinds of people watch anime. Not just anime nerds. Regular people watch it too. And plus, guys are treated has objects in a lot of anime as well. Yaoi is made for girl's entertainment and amusement. It's a double standard. Anime is suppose to be fun and enjoyable to watch. But this is why we can't have nice things. People like this making petitions. We have freedoms to make anime, tv series, etc.

This is where I stand. I find this petition invalid.

I found this petition. I find it very double standard because there are tons of anime that objectify men as well.

What are your thoughts on this? Opinions. Let's talk.

This could change the fate of future anime as we know it.

Do you believe anime is objectifying all women? Why or why not?
