why was it so hyped? so average

because the game is really popular and has a big fanbase, but this was the tutorial case

This game shines in the emotional moments, as well as intense comebacks, which this episode lacked since it was solved through just one evidence presentation.

This is 100% gonna be a bad adaptation though, subpar animation and pointless use of CG backgrounds, but hopefully due to the low budget this could mean we could be getting a two-cour as it costs less to produce. The only part I got a lot of enjoyment out of was the reenactment of the character's sprite animations, like Yahari crying.

Wow, this was great! The adaptation even went with characteristic game sounds and cut-ins which was awesome.

And to think they even had the guts to kill first woman right off the bat... I'm almost sure I gonna like this series.

People judging this after one episode are being too feisty. Considering this case in the games is like a 6/10 getting through it quickly was the best thing that they could have done.

The OP song is average but the Edgeworth and Phoenix Justice thing with the chain is awesome. This episode suffered due to this being the tutorial case in the game, and they directly adapted it so it felt weird.

That was about as mediocre as I expected it to be.

Then again that case was essentially a tutorial in the game, hopefully things will improve when Edgey shows up.

If they put in cornered i will be a happy man. That song is awesome. I'm relatively new to the Phoenix Wright series but I love it so far(I'm talking about the games). The sweeping CG shot of the courtroom was a little bit jarring and the animation was meh, but apart from that I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I really hope A-1 doesn't drop the ball on this one.

Wow the first few minutes come right of the book of cliche school anime. I'm honestly surprised he didn't run to court with a slice of toast in his mouth. Same goes for the OP. It seems weird having the typical "protagonist running" scene with a guy wearing a business suit.

Compared to the games this relatively short case didn't have much important cut from it, they didn't have Larry/Yahari screaming about how he's going to die, and they didn't meet with him before going into the courtroom. His voice makes him sound like a typical delinquent, which suits him.

Speaking of which, the CG panning around the courtroom was kind of painful. Other than that the animation isn't bad. I know a lot of people hate A-1 pictures, but I think they did alright here.

I like that the characters put on white gloves whenever they're handling evidence. That's something that doesn't get conveyed in the games, so I always think about it.

No toupee flinging. I'm disappointed. The "witness"'s behavior looked very odd in anime form. Definitely should have taken some liberties on that. And what was with that thing where his voice blows Phoenix/Naruhodou back? It's like something out of Yugioh. Very strange.

The ED of course has to be focused almost exclusively on a female character, in this case Maya/Mayoi. Very strange visually, but a decent song.

All in all I'm definitely gonna keep watching, but I'm largely neutral. This isn't the kind of series I thought would translate well into an anime (especially after Dangan Ronpa's anime) but I'll give it a chance.

What is that kind of hate, lmao? I don't give a crap about voice actors so i looked what he was associated with in previous roles and i think he's decent.

I don't hate Kaji at all (I like many of his roles) but his voice is so unfitting for this one, and unlike you, I do care for voice actor choices.

I thought so too at first but honestly I don't think his voice is that bad for the role. Considering he generally is a good voice actor, as long as he flat out doesn't sound like Phoenix (which isn't the case), I can be fine with his voice.

Of all the things to complain abut is the pacing really one of them? I mean, it was bad I guess, but who really wants two episodes for just the tutorial case?

First episodes are what people base their opinions on. If it is paced like ass and misses the whole point of what makes the games good(tension, great build up and mystery solving), then there's no real hope for the whole series.

Tutorial case might be a tutorial case, but there are thousands of ways this could have been made exciting. Direct copy pasta of parts of the game's script is NOT one of the said ways.

What we see here shows absolute lack of any sort of trying in adaptation.

Yuki Kaji does the "clumsy + serious" very well. He did Eren (AoT) and Sonic (OPM) too and I think he got this kind of character in the bag. Wright/Naruhodo falls into that category as well.

Well, the original was meant to be a satire on the Japanese justice system, which has an exorbitant conviction rate (basically, if you're a defendant facing the judge in a criminal case, you're screwed 99% of the time - that's no exaggeration).

That's why it takes that premise and turns it up to eleven, illustrating it with over-the-top characters. The exaggerated expressions also are pretty much a staple of the original VN-esque games.

As for the episode itself: I'm surprised they're recreating the games almost beat-by-beat, to the point where the episode is pretty much a fully fledged walkthrough for the tutorial case.

Not a bad thing per se, I'm just not sure if playing it this close to the game will work for a TV series.

In any case, I enjoyed it though - if only for the opportunity to relive that story with voiced, high-res characters and a more coherently depicted world.

I was really disappointing. Not only were their names original (Prefer Localization ones), which I do not like, the anime was pretty fast, going through Larry's trial pretty fast! And the dialog between Mia and Phoenix seems off at times. Whatever, I guess I am being to critical as a A.A mega fan (Played all games that have been localized so far). Hopefully they will make it more serious next episode, as it is a BIG turnabout.

As a huge fan of the ace attorney games, i literally completed all games in 6 months. I have to say i feel fucked in the but. Everything that was good was already in the game it self. This is a garbage adaption, it almost feels like a-pictures wants to make a joke of it. This franchise deserves much better than this piece of shit adaption, holy fuck.

Loved it, hope they include more music from the games! I recently started playing the first game again too. I'm glad that it seems like they'll keep the reactions from people in the stand when you find the contradictions. Some of those are hilarious, mind you there are some freaky characters too lol.

I'm guessing they rushed through the tutorial case to get to the longer ones. And the first cases of the games are all usually just quick shortened versions compared to the rest. So I'd recommend anyone not keen on the first ep to give a few more episodes a shot.

Quite a few characters I'm looking forward to seeing. Hopefully it will be good throughout.

You just right click their player and select the alternate sub track and it picks the US ones. Unless nobody from horriblesubs uploaded that version, you'll have to pay for it like I do lol

And just in case you're mad that the Japanese anime adaptation is using the JP names, you're a fucking dumbass

They need to make the OST match the tension in the coury room. I thought the art was spot on and the VA's emotions matched how the characters should be feeling, but the music doesn't match. It is too mellow I think. Not enough drama or tension.

Plus, it makes sense to use the Japanese names in the Anime, since it clearly takes place in Japan (Japanese passport, 14-hour time difference to New York), while the western version of the game is set in the US (it's actually a 9-hour time difference there, and the city the victim traveled to is Paris), hence the English names.

okay, so i think i just realized that a lot of the charm of the games came from the localization

the names, maya calling phoenix "nick", the goofy dialogue, the setting being in LA with frequent trips to Japantown (hilarious, and charming)... does ace attorney have a super plain, straight-forward script that got livened up for americans? is this going to continue to be super boring?

Crunchyroll has an alternative subtitle steam that uses the American names and changed the script to reflect the goofier humor in the localized version of the game.

Won't help if you're just listening to the dialogue itself, though. I'm hoping an eventual dub will go for the localized script.

They were originally Japanese world-plays for a Japanese audience, which the game localisation more or less was able to convey.

It was an okay first episode. I think if the cases become harder to solve and feel more rewarding when the bad guy gets caught this show can turn out to be really good. But if every episode is plain like this one this is just going to be another forgettable anime.

Animation was disappointing, however I didn't mind the voice acting and the episode was true to the game.
The OP cracked me up, with the characters running blissfully through the plains to pop music. I thought the ED was cute.

My favourite part would probably be the initial cross-examination, due to the familiar music.
I was waiting for the "Cornered" theme to play, but it never happened... hopefully in future episodes.
This is it below, I'm sure it will sound familiar:

Most of the contradictions were the same. Only difference so far is the defense and prosecution have swapped courtroom sides like in the fifth game. We also get to see Mr. Wright's house. Little disappointed though that Sawhit's toupee didn't hit Mr. Wright in the face like in the game. (Forgive me. I'm so used to the games that I'm just going to use the names from the english localizations.) In the games they don't have the evidence monitors either. Either way, there's plenty of material if this does get a second season. I know I'm going to buy the dvd.

The first episode was fine. This episode was based on the tutorial case and there isn't much to actually animate. I'm sure that starting next week, the series will become more enjoyable and "robust" in content.

The first episode seems "rushed" because they cut out all the: "Pressing the witness for extra testimonies" segments. In the video game you would be pressing every statement to gain more information. Even then it's just the first case ever, you can complete it without actually pressing any statements, which happend in the Anime.
You've just contradicted yourself... You say it's rushed because they cut out the "pressing", yet you also say the first case can be completed without any "pressing".

It's rushed because they've inserted unnecessary things that don't serve to build up any tension, like Larry/Yahari butting in too often, shots of the classroom trial, Phoenix stumbling at the first opportunity to present evidence, the ED, and a long next episode preview.

-Maybe- the next episode will be better with...

but going in with low expectations was a given these Aces games are kinda big time sinks so no matter how hard they try pacing is always gonna be a issue i figured why this first one was so quick and simple was because it was like tutorial level easy.

The ost remix wasn't that good though. but oh well. First case was interesting but I feel like the games do a better jo building the atmosphere.
