Because the topic is made by Comic_Sans. I find him a generally disagreeable person.

Here's a TLDR for you: anti-elitists attack forums! Discuss.

haha what the hell?

comic_sans = young lady

Also, why is this seen as an attack forum? And why would someone be anti-elitist when the topic has to do with anime? It ain't that serious.
Who do you see attacking other people? Everyone is just talking about how stupid the whole elitist vs casuals debate is, and that many people usually fabricate this idea of certain users or anime series being "elitist".

I mean, if you've had a self-proclaimed elitist start some shit with you then I'll admit that's pretty damn petty on their part. But there are a ton of threads that are already made (on MAL at least) that talk more shit about elitist then so called elitist talk about "casuals".

And he/she isn't even born yet, according to his/her profile. His/her list looks feminine enough that I can believe you.
Anyway, I just defaulted to male gender because sexism. (and, probably, because comic_sans had a male avatar at the moment when I first noticed him/her)

My TLDR was a TLDR of Comic_Sans's initial post, not of this thread.
In this thread, some people try to provide insights into anti-elitist's mind, or call for peace, or try to sweep the whole thing under the rug.
Thankfully, heated SAO discussion is in another thread.

Those SAO debates are caused by ALL types of people, even people who get called plebs and shit. Idk maaan, it's weird how passionate some people are about their SAO hate more than their love for other shows.

But honestly, what does it mean to be anti-elitist when talking about MAL? Obviously there is an actual definition to the term, but it seems like the use of the word "elitist" on this forum is often used as a way to describe someone with different taste and then call them pretentious for it. This has been my experience as well as the experience of many other users I have known, even some users with "casual" anime in their favorites.

For me personally, I don't think it should be a big deal if someone doesn't like an anime that you consider your favorite, unless they try to correlate it with your personality or intelligence.

Elitism thread again? Well I'm just going to left this.

-Elitist should recommend casuals some more thought provoking anime that's still enjoyable.
-Casuals should be more open to watch any animu
-Both should just have the sense of respect each other, cmon don't we have an attitude education?
-You can't blame people that rates SAO 10/10 when they haven't watch something like LoGH or any other anime that most elitist loves, especially if they've watched less than 50 anime.
-How people rates anime differs, there's one that uses 100% enjoyment, there's one that use almost 0% enjoyment, and there's someone who rates like me.

Saying that someone is an elitist / hipster / hater is far more convenient and easy, than recognizing the flaws of SAO for instance.

Edit: nice post @You.

Haven't seen you in a while Comic ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

OT: It has probably to do with crowd mentality. When you see a growing presence of a minority in opposition with the general consensus, the culture of discrimination becomes evident.

Recognizing the flaws of SAO is easy. Accepting that these flaws make SAO bad is impossible.

This doesn't sound like elitism to me, at least not how people describe it. Most people describe elitists as those with some superiority complex, generally using something ('intellectualism') to justify it.

In general, any time I've seen anyone being called an elitist is because they had the appearance of intellect. Sometimes the appearance was bullshit, sometimes not.

People who bully others are just bullies.

That's why I'm saying lol, most of the time those being accused of being an elitist aren't even elitists anyway; people misuse the phrase all the time.

In my experience, elitism is associated with a specific type of bullying. It's people who bully others because they're not intelligent. The anime they love are often meant to be intellectual and deep, like SEL and Texhnolyze.

It's just that if you feel threatened by elitists, maybe you don't have a very coherent basis for your opinion.

I agree that it leads to the misconception about which anime are considered elitist and whatnot.

The last sentence - do you mean me specifically, or 'you' in the general sense?
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

If you look at most elitist ratings, they're all pretty much the same. Tatami Galaxy, Cat Soup, Evangelion, Lain. And yet they act as if they are anime intellectuals, even though they're just going along with the group.

Same as movie elitists who watch a few Bergman and Tarkovsky films, and suddenly think they're film experts.

They act as if they're an authority on anime, and constantly bash "less intelligent" shows, but in really they don't know shit.

Pretty sure that this is a trend with just about anything...popular is the word I want to use. Where there are haters, there are anti-haters.

And now with this thread dawns the arrival of the anti-anti-haters.

More people should chill out and not feel like they need to always pick a side - but who am I kidding?

Also the elitists need to chill when posting a thread or bringing up a topic and then following it with "Oh and if you like [anime] than your opinion is not valid" or "if you think [anime] is good than you're hopeless" (especially if it's Clannad... I'll fight you brah) Not that I'm some anime sage or anything but I like to help casuals by recommending something along the lines of shows they like but just a little more... "acceptable"

The on-going tug of war between eltists and casuals, oldfags and newfags, hipsters and everyone else.

I mean, these arguments always existed when we gave people the freedom to express their opinions. It develops classically into we vs. you arguments, overgeneralizations, minimizing other view points, and the occasional "who gives a shit?"

When there are dissenting opinions, there will be pointless arguments. Internet is a superb outlet for this sort of stuff, and I'm not at all surprised it's ongoing. Been there, done that, don't give a shit anymore.

The same goes with music tastes. Sure, I can appreciate music when it's full of deep messages reflecting society and current issues, but doesn't mean I can't enjoy the simple party song with nonsense meaning everyone's been into every now and then.

Things would be a lot better if everyone chose what they actually like over appearances and categories. Why are people afraid of saying they like silly stuff if they admit they like something different first or vice versa. People are been dishonest with themselves to appease others that don't even really care (unless you're on the internet where everyone really really cares what you like and will grill you for been inconsistent) I see people who pretend they hate something or even miss like a film premier or a music concert because they don't want to be seen admitting they like it.

I mean I love films like Glengarry Glen ross, American beauty and to some that should mean I couldn't possibly enjoy something like Armageddon or Face off but I love those movies.

As for music I love the classical stuff even Opera but I also love freaking Kanye west. So maybe I just like been confusing.

Also, funny thing is that Shakespeare catered his plays to the common crowd back then, the every day, uncultured folk.... but now he's known as a classical icon.

Woaw thx for the thread Comic_Sans, I was tired of writing the same replies in every "Elitists do x" threads. I guess you said it all, not sure why anime fans are so obsessed with "elitism", especially since they got it all wrong and think it means watching "complex" shows.

"WHAT? Me, an elitist? You must be mistaken, I only watch the most brainless and uninspired shows I can find."
^The average MALer who makes an anti-elitists thread.

Funnily, those "anti-elitists" are often the one who are plaguing the community with their fucking elitism by saying stuff like "I don't watch mecha because there's no skill involved" or "I don't watch pre-2006 because the animation sucks" or "Ping-Pong doesn't look like an anime" (really, fuck that one and everybody who thinks this).

- elitist dont have anything any more to do, the recommendations for the casual viewer are already well circulated and haven't really changed in the last years.
- casuals if left to digest their favourite sphere of interest, once done, will reach outside of it on their own.
- I've rated sao 9 most of the run then 8 because of the ending while having watched easily over one thousand titles spanning many decades, styles, genres, mal_rattings. at the same time I've rated lotgh 3 after trying to watch it 3 times only to drop it every time over the years, starting when I had less than 200 titles and ending when I had 1200+ watched titles. am I a casual or an elitist?
- the most important point, and evidently glanced over in the discussion. even the most closed-minded individual, in his twisted view, can see that some random title is better than another and can probably articulate a reason - good or bad. too bad that it is also the hardest to even tackle. also it wont happen because it means work has to be done by the user and the dev.
- completionist - been there, done that. time is a finite resource. if you value your time so little that you accept watching a bad title over a potentially better one, you are a kid.

-Completionist is master race

So basically you're implying that there's already no problem between this casual-elitist stuff? Well maybe that kind of like that in your perspective, but I don't think so.

People should try to respect the others POV, I think. Welp I use my spare time for watching it. And judging a thing before you digests the whole thing feels incredibly wrong for me. I need to complete literally everything before can finally gives my judgement.

basically, yes. just attention whores or trolls remaining. you suffer a bit from selection bias, simply these 2 categories are too well represented here and coupled with the fact that a forum is a bit more public that the information bubbles most new users are used with in other places (facebook being the most prominent) you see an issue. just lurk a bit more outside of mal and things quiet down (not that this is a good thing, some degree of conflict stops the community from turning stale).

I somewhat agree with watching it all to give a fair assessment (just recently I was extremely pleased by a title that I previously dropped) but in the grand scheme of things, imo, the rare hidden gem is a small price to pay just to avoid a sea of shit. I may love the medium but that doesnt mean that I have to give it my time again and again if in return I get garbage.

I never took any ranting behaviour on the internet seriously, and I hope that most people are like that too (although most people in my country are easily got offended emotionally if met someone like that.) I agree in this case for the most part of it.

Welp I usually watch anime in the fashion of watching some random seasonals after finishing those so called 'rare hidden gems', well you can say that I wanted to keep my MAL ratings inbetween 4.50-6.00 also takes part of it. But I usually never prejudge, as you can see my ratings for School Days is somewhat higher than most people. If you wanted to asks on why I give such rating on every anime I watch, at least I can give some proper explanation. I really wanted myself to can describe the pros and the cons of every anime, basically.

I am not gonna bother on who is elitist and not and who just some faggot that can accept their shitty anime getting criticized and all that.

What i really liked about the op's post is the mention of those annoying fucking rhetorical questions where they pretend to supposedly wonder about something while predetermining the responses by stating something as a fact.

Holy fuck, that escalated quickly.

If you watch anime, you are a kid. We are all kids.

Anyway I don't know why is this thread still going when it's clear from minute one that elitism is a matter of attitude towards people and not of taste refinement. The rest are either misconceptions or overreactions.

It happens when a word is used to mean something else and now you just gave me a new meaning too. None of this shit would happen if people just picked up a dictionary once in a while.
