Why are MCs with demonic powers and villains as demon kings so common in anime?

Seriously, I've seen more MCs with demonic powers, who is actually a demon, part demon, etc as more common than MCs with holy/divine powers.

Then there is also the ridiculously overused demon king villains that I'm sick and tired of seeing.

I think you need to watch better anime

Also, this might happen because evil spirits are more common in japanese folklore(mazoku, maou, shit like that) .. either that, or just more popular

Maybe you should expand upon the genres of anime you watch.

Deago is that you?

Just avoid them and you'll be happier. You can easily tell them just by reading the synopsis.

Because that leaves an opportunity for the MC to battle his dark side...which I always thought made for good drama.

If the MC is blessed with "divine" powers, there's no danger there.

There's plenty of of possible drama, it's only just because dark side trope is so overused, you're more use to seeing it in action than holy or divine powers.

It's not hard to just set the "holy" side as the bad guys. A common thing with so called light and holy powers is it's generally set to angels and whatnot and when they're the badguys, it's usually them believing they're superior, righteous and almighty gods that look down on everyone else.

Not sure what you mean by posting the picture but Negi doesn't use divine/light/holy, his elements are wind, lightning and darkness.

Chibii's reply was about the MC fighting his darker side and the first person that came in my mind was Negi.

Because in general media the protagonists tend to have good powers, so it's a nice change to have heroes with "evil" powers.

In the end, its just the same thing. Even though your heroes have some kind of "evil power". You don't actually see them doing evil deeds. And it's a cool getaway from a difficult situation. "Oooh, our hero's almost lost but his evil power went berserk killing everyone" (which is more bad guys than good guys anyway).

And, "good powers" sounds too cringey for rebellious teenagers these days. So, they're using bad/evil power just to sound cool. Heck, you can even swap their power term by "The power of Jedi" if you don't like it and there won't be any problem at all.

And their last enemies, their main goal, their end card is always "Kill the God/Evil Overlord". No matter how the series took off, the ending is ALWAYS the same tiring sh*t over, over, over and over again (Not the start is any different anyway. "Boy meets girl, etc ect"). This trope is already craved into Japanese heart since ancient time (oh look, the legend of Momotaro). And thousands of JRPGs afterward until this very day.

Indeed, it makes a boring MC to be a doogooder. I Iike it better when MC have dark side or are a demon of sort.

Yes, I much prefer having the holy side as villains.

As for me, sorry, but 99% of time I've seen and read about the MC is on the good side which is always light/holy/angels and villains on dark/demons side. I think the movie Constantine is the only time I've seen an angel being a villain.

So seeing and reading about the complete opposite is refreshing for me and I view the other way as an outdated concept.

Like I said that may be true for anime, but in normal TV series it's not that common.
