I am told that most ordinary Japanese people aren't really into anime that much, and that anime is just a niche interest there that mainly caters to a small minority. Is this true?

It's true that late night anime isn't mainstream and only watched by a few people.
But there are a some that are well known. And also,Japan has a bunch of animated mascots, commercials, etc So I guess the style of animation/drawing is popular.

And even if it isn't popular in Japan, anime is not really popular in any country tbh.

Some older late night anime are very big in japan, the reason people don't watch them anymore is because they got worse.

And even if it isn't popular in Japan, anime is not really popular in any country tbh.

It's popular in a lot of countrys.

I assume it happens because the general population realizes that the vast majority of anime is not worth their while.

There's also not much reason to watch an anime adaptation of something when it usually already has a live-action movie or TV series.

It's associated with nerds/weirdos/freaks/losers. So most people stay away from it because they don't want to be seen as a freaky weirdo nerd. Being normal and fitting into society is an important thing in Japan, and even though this is slowly changing, most people aren't gonna branch of into niche things like anime.

Also, a lot of it is on late at night and it's also expensive as fuck to buy in Japan. I assume some of that is why things don't really sell as much as someone might think.

So yes, most normal Japanese people don't watch anime. But it's still popular enough. Summer Comiket drew over 500,000 people this year, so make of that what you will.

Probably not. I doubt it's a "woah crazy cultural phenomenal", but it's probably not non-existent or generally disliked by japanese, but I've heard there 'are' people with negative views on it too. And why is that surprising? People will like things and people will hate things.

I doubt it's really a niche interest, but I don't have ratings on me. I don't think there's anything like nielsen ratings for japan television. Everyone tells me that DVD sales are what to look at instead of ratings anyway.

Anime is bigger in Japan than any other country for obvious reasons, by anime I mean the whole manga, anime etc.

You may as well be asking why cartoons aren't more popular in the west though - there are a whole variety of reasons. Even 3d animations which are very popular in the west often get snubbed for being 'for children'.

When people say anime isn't massive in Japan, they just mean it's not like everyone watches it - nerds watch nerd things and normal people tend to watch less of that. Another good comparison which can be drawn from the west is how we get bits of nerd culture which enter the mainstream but that doesn't mean the person who consumes that content would like all the rest of it. Like how people might like the marvel movies but give no shits about comics in general.

I'm sure the same things happen with anime, you can enjoy whatever jumps into the mainstream without being someone who watches seasonal anime a lot or is likely to buy merch etc.

Anime is incredibly popular in Japan, just not the kind of anime that we watch.

Shows like Doraemon or Detective Conan pull some serious ratings and sell merchandise by the truckload.

Japan has SHIT TASTE. They watch crap that isn't good. However what's mainstream there isn't the same here. They let masterpieces go by while they watch love live.
Brace yourself.

Soon as LotGH 2017 comes out. The anime community is going to become so cancerous you will need to take cover and hide.

now THIS has legit credit. i've read about a person WHO LIVES IN JAPAN that can tell you this. but anime still not being popular? just no...

look, just recently there's a movie that reached over a billion yen in under 2 months.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-11-02/the-anthem-of-the-heart-anime-film-tops-1-billion-yen/.94896

then there's an anime that recently got streamed and reached over 5 million viewers (international views included).
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/daily-briefs/2015-11-01/monster-strike-net-anime-views-surpass-5-million/.94885

then there's an anime movie that sold over a million tickets in a month.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-10-28/live-action-bakuman-film-sells-over-1-million-tickets-in-4-weeks/.94733

if ANYTHING, it's america that doesn't care that much.
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-10-30/digital-manga-wonder-3-kickstarter-fails-to-meet-usd46500-goal/.94797

seriously, just go on anime news network and those rumors aren't even halfway believable.

listen, be wary of people saying stuff like that. lots of people (including me) have fallen for it, but just ask for actual proof. i bet they probably won't have any.

that's like saying you don't see your everyday man waltzing around in a superman costume, so comics aren't that popular. or if people aren't running around with harry potter glasses yelling "Expecto Patronum" in london he isn't that popular, even though the franchise is one of the most sucessful movie franchises ever (if not THE).

A lot of the most popular anime in Japan is for children (ie cartoons). Late night anime is part of a niche market. Manga is more popular than anime in Japan AFAIK which may be the reason why there are so few josei anime despite how many josei manga exist.

Anime is popular - just not as popular as you think it is. Probably because of late showtimes, expensive BDs/DVDs and merch, so on and so forth. It's really a market aimed at the people willing to drain their wallets to support their favorite series.

Manga and light novels, however, are much more popular in comparison. Mainly because they're both relatively cheap and anybody can buy them. But it's also because manga and light novels offer MUCH more titles and stories to choose from, rather than specific adaptations. There are literally thousands more titles of manga than there ever will be for anime, and majority of them probably will never see an anime adaptation.

Time is limited in Japan. They don't have the time like we do unless you don't care about school/work. Also for manga/LN, you can read it everywhere whether it be at school, train, bus etc. You can do the same with anime (by download or stream) but who has the time for that? Manga/LN takes less time hence why it's so popular in Japan. But they are shows (mainly kids shows like doraemon and crayon shinchan that are popular.

Animie is mostly considered kids stuff in Japan. And the otaku subculture probably doesn't help, either.

Japan is home to roughly 128 million people, yet the really popular shows often sell only like 20k BD+DVDs. Rarely does any show get past that benchmark. Movies may sell up to a million, but even that is quite rare and usually reserved for Ghibli movies (and even those have had disappointing sales recently).

And the most you'll see of anime ads and merchandise is in Akihabara. If you go beyond Tokyo, good luck finding anything.
