"I don't know about you but that Hand 0 (or whatever it's called in English) looked pretty much like a gamma ray burst to me which is infinitely more powerful than a nuke or anything like that."
On the other hand you could also argue that a bullet or a grenade can harm an average Nen user, say, Leol, Gon, Knuckle etc.
Also why not just fire a missile as powerful as that bomb using a satellite or a drone at first minute? If you'll say that they can deflect it somehow, then they could send a thousand. Better than letting the world's most powerful Hunter to die. And if you're gonna say that's expensive then let me say that Netero himself could arrange that... cause you know, letting YOURSELF die isn't the best choice to defeat an enemy. I'd at least want to see him *try* that option.
I wasn't gonna say what has been said in first couple of pages -and possibly many pages more- but that QUITE resembes an "asspull".
Just my two cents.
No. It was called an "asspull" because it wasn't foreshadowed (but many posters argued otherwise, with facts). What you didn't like was that it was a bomb, which is fine because it's your opinion. But what you have to understand is the meaning behind it. You didn't like that they stuck a low budget bomb inside a rather important figure? Good. That's the point. They didn't care about Netero going out like that, they made sure the Hunter Association took care of it so that their own hands wouldn't get dirty. Your idea is too expensive. Humans are shitheads -- that's the theme that's been visited throughout the entire arc, albeit in a more elegant and beautiful manner than I put it.
Netero's last words were: "Don't underestimate the humanity's bottomless capability for malice." for a reason. Even if the translation you read said "evolution" instead of malice, his face should have still given it away.
Well, Netero went out with a bang. pun heavily intended
The last few minutes kinda make me wonder where the name "Hunter" actually comes from. Cause at the moment Netero told the King his name, Meruem trully looked like a cornered beast.
At this point I don't even care that the Rose was a gigantic asspull, when it carries such a powerful message. Now that I've watched the whole episode, I don't even see the Netero vs Meruem as a Mankind vs Chimera Ants anymore, but rather as Mankind VS all other living beings, as the Ant King pretty much represents the ultimate life form and possesses the best genes from a multitude of species.
Like Netero said, humanity really has a limitless potential for malice and destruction: what the nature didn't give us, we compensate with our brains or take it by force. We are hunters, and the world is our prey.

Humans are scary.
You got to be kidding me lmfao "Rose is an asspull" go watch some more HxH please.
The anime industry is dead, the otaku fanbase killed it.
I'm just fine with my 120+ episodes watched, thanks for your concern.
When there's no foreshadowing and the resolution seemingly comes out of thin air I call it an asspull. Simple as that. You can disagree if you want but don't be a dick about it.

I'm telling you to go watch more because you'll then realise it's mot an asspull

Not going to force you to change your mind but there's been pages talking about foreshadowing for the Rose. Just because it was unexpected doesn't mean it's an asspull.

Just to clear things up, it was actually foreshadowed.
But then again, foreshadowing isn't what decides its being an asspull, but explanations do.
Asspulls by definition, have to be unrealistic in the first place and outside the boundaries of the world of the story.
I called it. I f***king called it. I knew they had planned something like this, but Netero had the decency to be semi-straightforward and actually take him to a nuke site lmao.
By far the best episode of the show and one of the best written in anime.
So many subtleties. Netero mentioning Meruem's name not only indicates his admitting defeat after Zero, but that what's to come after is not him personally, but mankind collectively.
That last minute argument was very deep, whether it was malice or evolution, both work imo.
The bomb explains two things:
Why zeno left this to Netero alone and why Netero said he lost the initiative back in episode 112. While it was "natural" for zeno.
Netero had planned to take him away all along, but Meruem asked first. While that helped him, he, felt he was forced into this flow of events rather than leading it.
I loved how this called us back to Meruem and Komugi and how it applied to real time fighting which Meruem exploited in a very smart way.
"subconscious bias toward certain moves"
"Disrupt your opponent's rhythm"
Just great culmination once again, that shows that while past episodes were very good, they also help improve future episodes with unparalleled continuity.
It's not simple callbacks here, it's very fine intricacy.
One thing I felt was weird is why they never decided to use it on the palace months ago before the humans marched in. They could have killed the king AND the guards and maybe Bizeff.
But just a minor issue, still found the episode to be phenomenal.
It was good I held out this long because now I can watch this in one go. I'd have probably started the manga otherwise.

@judals
Why they didn't use the bomb earlier has been discussed very thoroughly and there are more reasons than one. Glad you enjoyed the episode, it was indeed amazing. I shall expect your posts on the next amazing ones :P

THe nuke was a last resort. If you used it on the palace,it meant you had declared a war.No country or the Hunter Association could take responsibility for it.Otherwise, chimera ant was not a big problem to human.
Hunters had no idea what Meruem and 3 royal guard's powers were and where they were.Of course we knew everything, but the charactors knew nothing. For example, they maybe stayed underground....
PS:There are many reasons not mentioned yet. Just read the thread.
Now on topic - actually this fight played out extremely well.
It´s a similiar story to Whitebeard in One Piece. Whitebeard was called the strongest pirate alive and he proved to be worth the title. But he said it himself - that title refered to his younger self.
If he were in his prime, he would´ve wiped the floor with the marine HQ.
Now to Netero, he as well stated that he received that title a long time ago. Age has gotten the best of him and seeing as Meruem got cornered by him really showed us that if Netero were in his prime age, he would´ve probably beaten him.
Now on to the main point of my post - this fight was a battle of humans vs. a new species/animals.
Compared to humans, animals are superior in a lot of areas. They can swim better, run faster, fly, have much better senses, are stronger, etc.
The only thing we have going for us and that saved our existence in the first place is our intelligence.
It´s the ability to create things to make up for our own shortcomings.
If you pit a human against a lion, bear, shark, whatever without any technology or weapon whatsoever, he´d lose.
By using guns, knives and poison we are able to keep them at bay or kill them.
We are not born with the weapons to defend ourselves against predators like that, we have to get dirty and nasty to survive.
Now, in HxH, humans have the ability called Nen. Nen is the art of controlling ones life force and giving it a form. So in fact, next to it´s weapons, humans have a natural power that let´s them compete with beasts and animals.
Now, there is a new species that not only combines the natural abilities of animals and beasts, which are already far superior to our measly bodily abilities, with our human intelligence which enabled us to survive that long against the odds of nature as well as the ability to use the life force in the form of Nen.
Now with all that in mind, pit the supposedly strongest human/hunter at his life span's end against the fresh born strongest collection of animals, beasts and humans of a superior race that absorbs the life force of anything he eats and you can compare it to a fight of an old hunter with a knive vs. a young grizzly bear.
Sure the old hunter has his experience and training to fight against opponents like that, but vitality is at his enemies side. His experience can´t overcome the burden of age, thus letting him lose in terms of agility, strength and stamina.
So how can the old hunter bring down the grizzly bear? How can Netero defeat Meruem?
By relying on something that I already mentioned before - humanities iron will to survive, using any means possible.
Atomic weapons, Biological weapons, Chemical weapons, pick your favourite.
If it was an old hunter against a grizzly bear using a grenade as his last means, it´d be "well, he only had a knive, he fought against a bear, if that was the only way to kill it, why not?"
It´s the same for Netero. Just that the survival of the human race depended on it and his enemy was the ultimate life form.
And to put it into Netero´s own words:
"King of the ants, Meruem. You don´t understand a thing about the limitless malice of mankind!"
If some race gets too large, we burn it.
If something annoys us, we poison it.
If something threatens us, we exterminate it.
So this fight shouldn´t piss you off, but should actually impress you, as it really is above other fights, especially in the shounen genre.
It´s not willpower, friendship, life force or magical artifacts that saves humanity. It´s technology, it´s the unbelievable malice and viciousness to use any means possible to stand atop the food chain and defend it´s title of evolution`s finest.
It´s technology, with the sole goal of killing everything it touches, originally designed to kill it´s creators, namely humans.
This fight showed us that in a world of Nen and other supernatural abilitites and beings, no matter how strong a human is, he can´t overpower human´s enemies: Time and nature.
And to overcome them, we rely on every means necessary. Be it poison, chemicals or something else.
Even the ultimate life form can´t compete with the wicked creations of mass destruction that humanity created. Nature lost to the inventiveness of human´s desire to kill.
perfect
Excellent analysis. I agree.

That was amazing. I know I didn't like Netero's gratitude for the fight, but the resolve he showed was nothing short of awe-inspiring.
I liked how Netero's background with the fist came into conflict with Meruem's learning of strategy from Komugi. Hundreds of thousands of hits?! Netero's sheer stamina in the face of such horrid odds was impressive. When he lost his leg, I was worried for a moment, but Netero shook it off like it was nothing. Losing the arm and still being able to attack was cool too.
The Zero Fist was the biggest show of force I've seen yet. What a colossal attack. After seeing how spent Netero was, I could just feel the dread. I was desperately thinking, "Please let him (Meruem) be dead" over and over. Meruem came out damaged, but alive. What a moment, but as hopeless as that seemed, the kicker took the cake.
The bomb was pure genius. When I saw the look on Netero's face, I had no idea what would happen. The Zero Fist used all of his aura, after all. It all made so much sense when it happened, though. He came equipped with a freakin' nuke! (The fear it instilled in Meruem was a nice detail.)
The thing is, despite being surprising, it instantly explained why Netero only paid Zeno to separate Meruem from the Royal Guards. One, a bomb would have killed Zeno, and two, if they fought at the palace, not only would they have to deal with interference, but it would also endanger all of the people hypnotized there. It also explains why Knov said that the Royal Guard wouldn't get to Meruem in time.... Even that they were in a weapons testing area! So much foreshadowing.
Something else I recalled was Killua's talking about EG dealing in nuclear weapons (which seemed like something odd to include in-universe to me at the time); add the inclusion of tanks and jets... and wow.
It just makes sense. A bomb was truly a creative end. That was just awesome.
RIP Netero. That was one of the best anime fights I've seen.
that was quite a good fight, i prefer fights between equals instead of these one sided fights that HxH has but still i liked it, d ve been much better if the king was trying a bit more though
but anyways finally a fight to the death... im not sure whats gonna happen next, if the king isnt dead with this i doubt someone else can take him down, he is insanely op
This arc started off so slow and now it's turned into some of the best anime I've ever seen. How are they going to top this episode? If the king isn't dead after that we're all fucked.
Always-Hungry said: One of the most badass old man death scenes I've ever seen in anime. The last two I remember were
Whitebeard in One piece and Yamamoto-Genryuusai in Bleach manga.
This!^^
The older chars in anime are sometimes the most badass ones. Unbelieveable this fight. But like someone before said I was also really scared about Neteros face at the end. Holy s*** Oo
I didn´t expect a bomb but obviously that he would sacrifice himself in any way. Great absolute fantastic episode also if it´s sad that Netero died :-(

Wut? Netero had a nuke in his chest? W U T? Well, if Netero did end up killing Meruem then that's good because I would be pissed off if Gon ended up killing him.
R.I.P Netero. That was the most splendid fight I have ever seen in all animes. That sacrifice was incredible. Yup checkmate from the moment Netero and Meruem arrived at the site
Amazzzing last several episodes. The excruciatingly slow pacing of Chimera arc was certainly worth it. One of the best fights I've ever seen in a long while.
HOLY CRAP!!! This episode was ridiculously awesome! These last few episodes have definitely made the slowness of the Chimera Ant arc worth it. So much action in the episode and the animation made it so much more enjoyable.
The battle was too perfect.
Netro is gone and his lucky t-shirt too.
I expected the king to die, however his death wasn't that joyful.
This episode literally reminds me of the saying "All good things come to end" .
I know this thread is old but, I find it funny how a Naruto dickrider is talking about non-existent asspulls in HxH, when the last arc of Naruto is FULL of them. LOL. So he can ignore the asspulls in Naruto, but can make up one so he can shit on HxH? Nice.

You do realise that you are not looking any better for calling people dickrider.
Ah I see... So that's what "sacrificing someone means". Though the bomb thing surprised me quite a bit, I thought when he stabbed his heart he will launch a secret attack or something.
[size=90]I can't help but cheer for Netero even after he lost his leg and left arm. I had a feeling he still had one last weapon after the zero hand but the fact that he committed suicide caught me off guard. It would be a waste if Meruem got off after that because then who will be able to defeat him if not Netero.
