Its funny how they have no problem with lolis and rape but drugs is a big no no to them. Perhaps there are laws against the depiction of drug use on tv during certain hours?

guess that didn't make it into the anime lol

only instance i can think of is that ex-rock star from clannad after story (anime) shooting up
Ya know the dancing appliances that show up in his room every once in a while? Those are hallucinations brought on by the drug. I'm unsure of what drug it is, though, because I thought that cocaine wasn't a hallucinogen.

he smokes menthols in the anime but that's it so i assumed all that stuff was his imagination
i'm gonna go read the manga now, you've got me curious

I think it's implied it was all his imagination. But, there are many drugs that can cause such effects. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychedelics,_dissociatives_and_deliriants

Not sure how accessible they are in Japan though.
The anime leaves the most out and the manga downplays it. The novel which I have not read ive heard describes his drug use in much more detail and no the anime doesnt say its his imagination it actually more hints that he has schizophrenia to some level so he really is hallucinating and having paranoid delusions for a reason.

Ahh, another reason I hold those two anime in high regard. It was already mentioned, but I do believe there is some regulation on drug use shown on television in Japan. I remember reading something to that extent a few years back and just kind of brushing it aside. I could spend a while looking this up, but I am waaay too lazy for that.

But Japan's drug laws are much, much more stricter than in the ridiculous USA, where you can weed without breaking a sweat. Well, if you know the right people anyway, but it isn't that hard to get in touch.

Even for the smallest of drug abuse... For a foreigner, I believe it's deportation and 5 years of no-entry, while for a citizen... it's around 10 years of sentence. Or so I think, I might be wrong.

It could be worse, drug possession of any kind in Singapore gets you hanged (no joke), Europeans and Australian travelers get hanged for this a lot.

wow, had to find scource myself before i would belive it, they really do hang ppl for it, though they need to carry a certain amount to be killed.

If you read the novel he explains that what he's snorting is a psychodelic drug that's actually legal if you order it online. They're called research chemicals and they have one for just about any drug you could ever want. It's some nasty shit though and I wouldn't recommend it. If you want to learn more look up stuff about JWH, or 2C-E.

In Malaysia,
You could commit crazy offences and get maybe 10 or 20 years in prison or maybe even life in prison.

But if you were to smoke weed, you get a death sentence?

Fuck logic.

drugs are REEAAALLLY taboo in japan, so theyre not really talked about openly in pop culture. theres still a lot of drug use in japan tho, its just less casual and has more of a moral stigma to it.

It definitely shows in the quality of their product. 0.6 grams of shitty Japanese reefer costs the same as one gram of quality New Zealand reefer.

It was the Americans who introduced the stigma surrounding drugs to the Japanese.

Sorry for bumping old thread. I was googling the same question and wanted to contribute my two cents.
Try to find Mondaiteiki Sakuhinshu (Confidential Confessions). IIRC, second chapter is dedicated to a young schoolgirl who becomes a drug addict and heavily uses amphetamines and psychedelics. Not going to tell much, read that, it's exactly what you're looking for.

There is a big part near the end of Shibatora with a drug ring and you see some teenagers taking speed. There is also a girl that used to sniff paint thinner. Like some said before; drugs are really taboo and associated with the yakuza in Japanese society. I feel like you see more characters that drink and smoke if you compare with western media though.

They're both fictional, but there's a street drug in Serial Experiments Lain as well as in Kara no Kyoukai. To be honest it's one of the reasons I like anime so much. I can't stand alcoholics, druggies, or smokers (even though there are tons of drunks in anime).

I really haven't seen too many anime characters use drugs, smoking and drinking for sure, but not drugs. Maybe drugs just aren't an essential story element in most anime series like they would have been in something like That Seventies Show. Who knows though, maybe someday they'll make an anime Kids On The Dope, instead of Kids On The Slope!

I don't think the authorities would be too happy with a show openly depicting drug use airing on TV since they're pretty uptight about that kinda thing as far as I'm aware. I guess it's also why showing teens drinking and smoking is a no-no. Hell, they even censored Jotaro's cig in an episode of Stardust Crusaders lel.

That being said, it is referenced and even shown in some older movies and shows.

Seconding the NHK manga.

Another one would be Cowboy Bebop. They eat magic mushrooms on one episode and then there's the "Red Eye Reprisal" episode where the villains take drugs to turn their eyes red to gain power.
