As the title implies - how does one start enjoying anime on it's face value?

Often I find myself being drawn to a particular anime because of the gorgeous animation and overall art production quality or overwhelmingly positive reviews, however when I actually start watching the said anime, I can't stop but to roll my eyes, cringe or be flat out bored in first few minutes losing any desire to be invested or interest whatsoever to continue watching the series.

Does anyone feel the same?

It happens now and then.
I pick a series that has postive reviews or is reccomended to a series I liked.
Then it's turns out to unbearable to watch

Find a genre that you like and stick with it. Often, you'll find that you fit into the Slice of Life/Romance/Comedy genres or Mystery/Thriller/Psychology.

If I went by what most people seem to like then yeah, it would be difficult to enjoy. But I tend to run through lists going "neah, neah, neah, oh this looks interesting/could be good" and that seems to serve me better.

That just shows you that you shouldn't watch the anime based off of its art/animation, read the description first, then try it.

Short anime would be good for you, something that's 8-12 minutes long per episode.

With all the different genres and styles of anime how can you just like it on face value, unless you're creating anime yourself or have some other motivation for watching besides it being purely for entertainment. Even then you're not going to like it just because it's anime.

Just to quickly add to the thread - I'm not particularly someone who watches anime on a regular basis, it's the opposite. I guess you could easily go by labeling me a "casual".

So I really have no idea which studios or anime series are the best or which one of them are something I'd enjoy watching.
I can only go by ratings on MAL which can often be misleading.

Well firstly you should make your list public, so people can see what you have seen. Secondly score the anime you have watched, so people know what they should recomeend to you or alternatively you can tell people what kind of shows you enjoy and why you enjoy them. Fourthly maybe try watching it in English Dub, it could be you cringe when hearing Japanese. Lastly maybe anime just isn't for you, so instead of wasting server space with a thread like this, you should just stop watching it.

What you shouldn't do is tell people that you quickly lose motivation, because then why should people waste their time on helping you?

To answer your question, no if I did I wouldn't watch anime that's just basic knowledge. So because of that you don't even deserve the label casual, because even a casual knows this.

I can only go by ratings on MAL which can often be misleading.

1) When choosing anime, ratings and reviews are not the main point. The main point is genre and target audience.

Genres are things like "sci-fi", "comedy", "romance" and the like. A typical anime will have 2-3 of these. You probably already know what genres you like, you just have to check if the anime you plan to watch fits at least one of them.

Target audiences are broad groups of people that might want to watch the stuff. There are 3 target audiences you have to be aware of: Shounen (boys), Shoujo (girls) and Seinen (young men). Most worthwhile/popular anime falls into one of them, but there are a few others, look them up somewhere.
Also, don't let the labels confuse you, many people prefer anime of a demographic that is different from their own.

Once you you start choosing anime based on your preferences, things become a lot easier.

2) If the start is too boring, skip to somewhere in the middle. It gets the "in medias res" effect that makes starting a lot more fun.

3) When all else fails, there is a bit of mental acrobatics known as "shut off your brain". It helps a lot when watching anime that depicts your areas of expertise badly wrong.

Well, now that we see you list, we can see that most of anime you liked were the darker works of "seinen" target audience.
There is quite a lot of anime of that kind in your list. That's unsurprising, as it is the category that is most liked by critics, and thus most likely to get good reviews.
