Great series but I am disappointed with the ending. Not necessarily because Kaori died but because I think her death was handled poorly. Considering that the series tended to revel in melodramatics it was a rather anti-climactic end. The audition from Kousei was certainly beautiful but the sudden cut to funeral > letter > something something Tsubaki > credits seemed a little shallow considering the gravity of what had happened.

I think I would have much preferred some sort of scenario where they played together, in person, one final time before she slips away. Even if it was just in the hospital room with family and friends. I could understand Kousei having some closure in a situation like that. The way that Kaori does pass--desperate for more time and without picking up the violin--doesn't do it for me.

Oh well, still enjoyed the show and the music.

I think most people here watch anime for the sake of enjoyment...why bother doing things which are essentially pointless (in general, watching anime won't directly positively affect your health is what I mean by pointless) when you don't enjoy it?

It does make one wonder, if the said anime suck so much, why do haters keep on watching?

tingy said:

... I definitely did enjoy the first few episodes, but then gradually I found that I didn't enjoy it that much anymore. ... But I don't think it's nitpicking when several factors that occur again and again, and affects my overall enjoyment of it.

See above - why continue wasting your health when you no longer enjoy it? And if the answer is that it's still enjoyable despite these glaring flaws, wouldn't it be good to share what you like as well?

tingy said:

.Also, characters are very important to people's enjoyment, and proper character development also contributes to some people's enjoyment of an anime. And even then, character development can be really subjective. Some will tell you that it seems forced, while to others it may seem natural (not that it necessarily pertains to this anime). Anyways, you say that this story was about Kousei and his mental growth. Indeed it is the overall focus of the story. Unfortunately it was polluted with unnecessary things like Tsubaki's romantic feelings for Kousei. They spent quite a lot of time on that, yet she wasn't a character that many could feel connected with, thus, she was not a very likable character. I do like seeing Kousei growing past his trauma, yet have you also considered how the portrayal of Kousei's mother and the abuse that Kousei went through did not sit well with some of the audience? It doesn't matter if the production was great, no one's going to tell you that the visuals weren't beautiful or that they didn't like the soundtrack (in fact, I've been listening to it on replay). That alone will not be able to wash away the distaste of the problems that I, or other people, found throughout the series. You found beauty in this anime, but not everyone did. I'm also betting that I will find beauty in some other anime in which you won't find any in that same anime. It happens.

Lots of nuanced points - this is definitely better than many posts that are no better than "this piece of shit is finally over".

Just keep in mind that even with nuanced points, if solely filled with criticism, will make some see you as nitpicking, since you didn't balance them out with positive points.

But that might be what you are looking in a discussion anyway.

You might consider that some people enjoy the act of analyzing and criticizing a show just as much, or even more than the act of watching it. Saying "if you don't like it, why are you watching it?" is a bit narrow-minded, don't you think?
Also, a post similar to "this piece of shit is finally over" isn't any worse than something along the lines of "I loved it! i cried a lot at the ending", which this thread is filled with. Why don't those people share their negative feelings, too? Why are you pointing your finger only at those who criticize it?

Does asking a question makes one narrow-minded now? Good to know some people here don't like questions.

My question was directed toward the previous claim that people watch for enjoyment and will not do so when no longer enjoying... obviously a different claim from yours.

On the other hand, for these people, if criticizing is the main reason for enjoyment, wouldn't they actually get more enjoyment from a show that has a lot to criticize for? Shouldn't they actually rate the enjoyment much higher then and say they enjoy it very much? There is a paradox here.

First, I didn't say criticizers need to share positive feelings. I said "...if solely filled with criticism, will make some see you as nitpicking...". Spelling out the reality of how they will be perceived isn't pointing fingers.

Second, positive messages and negative messages are perceived differently by human brains. If you don't understand this point, just go find some new parents and tell them their baby is pretty versus their baby is ugly and see what happens.

This behavior can actually be seen here - very few people criticize the bland "I love it! i cried a lot at the ending" responses. People simply don't care. Feel free to criticize them if you do care though.

Third, feel free to think of me as someone who enjoy the act of analyzing and criticizing critics, specifically haters who can't formulate anything beyond "a piece of shit". MAL appears to be a ripe place.

R.I.P. Kaori was really hoping there was going to be a miracle or something but I kind of knew it wasn't gonna happen because i accidentally read that it was a tragedy. Really thought she was going to live though when they showed her after the surgery and partially opened her eyes.

Ill give you this series had fantastic art and music, but that is where the quality outright stops. So many people egged me on to watch this super sad ending, and you know what? I laughed. I genuinely laughed at how much it was a let down.

So in the adventures of chronic bitch and doormat, I have yet to see one moment where Kaori's character had one second of positive features. Shes a lying, manipulative, selfish downright spiteful character, who is out only for her own goals, and ignores anything that might get in her way. Remember the 14 year old boy with breaking trauma that basically ruined his only point in life at the time? Screw that I need an accompanist. Ill torture him for a week to get my point across, even though I barely know him. Then when the show goes badly, Ill even blame him. Im sorry, where am I supposed to feel sympathy for her?

As for Arima, I had somewhat sympathy for his character to begin with, an unfair childhood and even his friends turning on him to force him into something I didnt hear himself say he wanted to do. "Ill do this so my mother will get well" isnt a will to do something, its him convincing himself his beatings and abuse are righteous. There is a point however, when everything just gets tired. I got sick of his attitude, his dense as all nature, but on top of everything, his putting up with all the abuse he gets.

I did not feel anything but relief at the end of this. "why did i watch it all the way through?" 2 reasons. I will give everything a chance till the end to give my full opinion, but also because I genuinely thought thered be one thing about this series which i enjoy. To be fair, I did get that out of the soundtrack, but little else. Especially not what tried to pass for "comedy", super forced lets beat up mc because laughs was soo lame I cringed.

Enjoy it as you will, don't let me stop you, but please dont spread that this is some kind of new great must-see series, because its just not. It has its good points, but a lot of bad, if its a reccommendation say its good and leave it at that.

Music was pretty good. Not much character development outside of the main character. I guess a close second would be Tsubaki...? Still doesn't seem like much as everyone remained similar throughout. Even for a show like this, I feel like the pacing was a bit slow in various parts throughout the anime. That "lie" was not very surprising, so not the most gasp-worthy of reveals. The letter at the end was still pretty emotional though.

And to be perfectly honest, I was hoping she would not survive till the end of the anime. One, I felt like it would lessen the emotional impact if she were to survive. And two...I did not particularly like her, and while Tsubaki isn't the most interesting girl, I preferred her over Kaori when pairing with the main character. I just...did not like Kaori.

I was all for this anime toward the beginning when it focused more on the main character and his issues with becoming a musician. As it got more into the romance drama though, it became less enjoyable because of the fairly boring characters. I rate it 8/10. Art and music carried the majority of the score. Plot was decent. Not very many curve balls to make it less predictable. Characters lacked oomph for me. Loved crazy hair boy and stalker girl though.

In no way do I think this anime is bad I just think it's a ton of wasted potential.

Sure the ending was emotional, but I felt like I was just an outsider in all of this. At no point did I care about Kao or what would happen to her. For a character that important I felt they did very little to make us care about her. I felt that even a less important character like Tsubaki was more developed than her.

I'm no master storyteller, but there must be a better way of telling a story than 15 minutes of inner monologuing every episode.

Even tho this post was mostly negative I still enjoyed it, just felt that it could've been more. 7/10

So sad, RIP Kaori. Felt really sorry for Kousei.

A lot of props to the music, I don't listen to classical music much but they were really good.

I did liked this episode, from the music to the letter and then to the monologue. I felt like this is a great ending to this anime.

Lulz, I see many hater comments about this awesome show and I don't know why. This Anime was amazing in every aspect possible and the last episode was the pinnacle of it - best possible ending!
You should ignore those imbeciles who disliked the show and should listen to me only, since if I like something - it's good. And I liked Shigatsu very, very much.

I usually give high ratings for most anime if they are good and fun, but for Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, i think it's the first that truly gets an honest Masterpiece rating. I liked the anime from the first second of the first episode and even though i feel the same as most of us here do (sad, angry, depressed), i can't bring myself to hate it for and ending that made me cry, for an episode that lead me to believe in miracles and then have my hope shattered. I hope i'll be able to watch it again and enjoy the happy episodes and experience the sad ones. Though i saw the drama tag, i wished for this anime to have a fairy tale ending.
I saw this as a story from another level of existence, from the creation of someone's mind, for me it was alive, just like me, you and everyone else. That's why i could feel it so profoundly and experience it like i would my own life.

best confession I have ever seen!<3 when kaori said "I just told a single lie, kaori miyazono likes ryouta watari, that's the lie I told"
then I wondered myself, oh! that's why it's called your lie in april <3

tsubaki's friend looks like oba-chan her face&her voice doesn't suit a middle schooler girl lol.

also I still don't like tsubaki. I'm not the kind of person who root the male mc with his "annoying childhood friend". would be a 10/10 for me if there was no tsubaki or atleast she doesn't fall to arima.

8/10 because kaori is just beautiful esp the confession!! <3

Pretty bad series. It uses the death of a character as main plot device, which is terrible, and aside the music everything is pretty random.

The ending is well executed and thoroughly thought, However I wished there was an an alternative ending where Kaori could of survived.

As an overall series I rate it a strong 7.8/10 which is considered good but there are some downsides which could of been better. I could of given an 8 but guess some character wise were a bit let down due to the fact, All characters were hiding a secret and did not want to reveal such as confession. Furthermore Arima, did not confess his feelings to Kaori, though I think this was intentional as it would create a more sad atmosphere for Arima since Kaori knew her health conditions. It is an anime I will remember due to the end.Furthermore, Arima has finally overcome his fears and can move on becoming a fine pianist than clinging onto his past which was shown from previous episodes.

I felt Kaori and Arima could have performed more duets as there was only 1 song they performed together which I felt it was insufficient to prove their sync as a pianist and violinist.

Edited: I rate it 8/10 after many flashbacks of how the story is told.

I think I just had my soul ripped out, this ending was beautiful but it hurt me so much, I was so afraid of how the show would end that I didn't want to watch it so I avoided it until today. I knew the show could only go two ways, the much better ending that would rip my heart out or the happy ending that came out of nowhere, as much as I think they made the right choice since this is my new favourite series there is still a piece of me that wishes it was happier, needless to say I was in tears from the moment she began to play her violin to the end of this episode. One other thing though, I was fairly certain from the beginning that she was in love with Kousei, but getting that confirmation did help me feel a bit better but also made me even more sad. Rest in Peace Kaori, you will be dearly missed.

great anime, but I didn't get the emotional in the end..
But I think because she ( Kaori ) didn't show more often after she get hospitalize, my feeling fade away..
at the beginning I like Kaori because she always show in every episodes, but as the time running, her presence in the show fading T.T

Great ending though..

The final concert was amazing and I love how his character always used Chopin pieces to portray his feelings. Seriously Chopin rules. His last duet with her was great even though imaginary. The letter made this a very satisfying ending. I didn't actually think I'd make it this far so this ending was actually much better than I had anticipated. I thought the pacing of this show got much better after episode 12. I am a bit curious as to what Kousei ends up doing. Did he win the competition, where is he going to high school, did he become a world renowned pianist so another OVA or even a shorter second season wouldn't bother me. I finally got used to the animation and thought it was decent by the end. Overall the saving grace and what made this anime really great to me was the music. I'd have to give this a 6/10 though for all the other flaws that almost kept me from continuing the series after episode 10.

Man that second half was so painful to watch. The letter was really the ultimate payoff and a tragic yet beautiful end to Kousei and Kaori's relationship and the fact that they won't be able to be with each other even after changing each other's lives so much.... just too heartbreaking. I bawled like a baby at that final 'I love you' I admit.

this show is so difficult to score because .. i will admit - the story bored me
it was predictable, they repeated a lot of their own script, and the characters were occasionaly frustrating because they were indecisive or literally stupid.

But i kept coming back, every episode.

The art was incredible, one of the best drawn animes that I've watched (the piano animation was a little off, but the stills? magic) the sound was also incredible. The competitions, alongside the Op/Eds were all things that I'd come back and listen to again.

So now im finished, and I'm wondering how I enjoyed hate watching a series so much. It wasn't amazing, but I know it will stick with me. 7/10

It wrapped up well, the final half of the episode was good for what the series allowed it to be. Honestly though I didn't like it that much at all as a whole. I didn't like the praise that the abusive mother was given or the constant flashbacks to it, got real tiring after awhile. the dying girl just felt like added forced drama to give Arima something else to cry over and give "will he play?" tension... again. Redundant and wanting tears from me for characters I don't really care about.

I actually liked what the baseball girl (her name escapes me) could have given but she was rather wasted, sidelined too often to mope by herself or to her friend and not adding much to the plot as a whole. Watari and the piano competition duo seemed compeletely pointless and waste of screentime. I'll still get this to 6/10 for even though this is a show with many problems it still entertained me enough... whenever it wasn't trying to force tears from me at any rate.

In my opinion, this series was good, and I don't really know why people are giving so much hate towards it.
There were decent main plot and idea inside, good main character, and good developing of the story. Even though it was pretty clear how it will end, I think they executed it pretty well!

Yes, it goes over drammatic, maybe it's not realistic, but for me, it left something inside of me, that I can look at this anime, and said - oh yeah, it was a pleasure to watch!
You need to keep moving on in your life, doesn't matter how hard it is, or there is a setback to your ambition. Take all the important things from the past and from the present, and bring them with you to the future!

Music was great (chopin fan boy here) as well as art. The only weak point, as I mentioned before, a lot of overdramatic moments, when it didn't really need to be.
But overall, solid 9/10.

The relationship I have with this anime is strange. The series leaves a lot to reflect on. Some of those reflections are violent, wake-up calls to the life we lead ourselves.

An example - after Kaori decided that life is to be lived to the fullest, not only is her personality and outlook on the world refreshing and fulfilling towards herself, she is able to touch the lives of the people around her, allowing them to develop themselves and overcome emotional obstacles. I'm sure we all hear, "live everyday like it's your last!" or something along the lines of that... but it's impact is stale. Shigatsu was able to capture this message, and deliver it in a way which makes you see how that mindset can affect you, and affect the people around you.

There is no doubt a bunch of mistakes and scenes which could've been polished (i.e. loli girl's random tree antics -> suddenly subject of next four episodes, over-use of 'I'm just Friend A' despite obvious mutual affection... she asks you to double suicide with her but you STILL think she's just playin'?), but I feel they can all be waived due to the sheer emotional impact the series left. A feeling where, yep, its sad the main girl dies. But would you think to have it any other way? No, this is exactly how it should be.

I rate this a 10/10 because it presented its motifs in a way which hits you much, much harder. A testament to the ultimate goal of storytelling - this is an anime which can change your world view.

I' not sure I liked the way they handled her death. I need more closure. They didn't show her die, no dramatic operating scene, so during the concert I was wondering in panic if she was actually dead. And I really adored Kao-chan, I didn't expect her to actually die and not even show anything.
Also the last time that the two of them talked was unmemorable and needed something more meaningful happen during it. It just left me feeling empty inside. If only he had as least given her a fucking hug before she died.

Not sure I agree. On the one hand, I agree that if they both knew how they really felt about each other, then the separation would have been more painful. But on the other hand, not confessing their feelings for each other only makes it more regretful, especially now that he knows she had feelings for him all along. It's sad for her that she died never realizing that he loved her, and for him to live with the regret of never having let her know his feelings.

Beautiful ending. One of the very few tear jerking anime out there.

Even though Kaori is dead, a sequel will be great just to see how far Kousei gone in his pianist career.

Bittersweet endings are always hard to pull off, but this was done pretty well.

Sad anime though I gave it amn 8 cozshe was dying. Theirs quite a few like that now somewhere and I think its getting pretty predictable. Knowing it was going to happen after a few episodes was shite and just having that in there was annoying.

I'm usually all for sad endings if they work well but I trhink this should have had a more happier ending with her living though I don't think it would have the same impact asit is so....

8/10 for the entire show

Call me heartless, but somewhere along the way I wanted to see her die quicker.
In any case, I'll just leave it here:

Except Shiji went through much more crap.

Eh, decent enough of an ending to give closure, but felt rather rushed.

Overall series gets a 7/10

Pretty great in the beginning, but then they try to force the feels too many times, just because, plus comedy relief ruined too many serious parts.

Because of the sudden and quick reveal on some of the back story on Kaori, it left me caring less about her in the end.

Also would of been nice to listen to some of the music they were playing rather than hear them monologue.

Real talk: this show was boring as fuck. The art, music and animation are great, but i couldn't bring myself to give a fuck about the characters. Seeing them yelling and crying wasn't enough to move me. The show isn't bad; it felt like a high-quality anime (in terms of production values). But i'm not really sure why this shit is rated so high.

I liked the ending. Although to be honest, the past episodes are quite too dramatic for me to handle but the last episode made me teared up. Well I knew from the start that Kaori likes Arima and she the stuff that she likes watari is just a front. I love the art and the music and I'm wondering what happened to the competition.
