| I agree that it's probably just a plot-device, to model a certain situation. But even irl people call anything that makes them sneeze "cold", be it a flu, an arvi or whatevs. Also I think you can get really bad, when you have high temperature, no matter the reason. And many mcs are high-schoolers, so they can rest. Frankly, maybe that's not such a bad idea - it lets you get over without nasty consequences, and you don't pass it on to other people. Btw, nowadays it's become much more realistic. We've currently have an epidemic, and there're like 60 deaths in our city only. |

| I'm no doctor but i'm pretty sure that due to a faster rate of mutation on behalf of some viruses, especially due to the overpopulation on japan as whole, a lot of those colds present much more aggressive symptoms than those experienced by the western population. |

Hope you'll get better soon. We had the same variety last year - being knocked out for a week, two days simply lying without movement, then two weeks of cough. It's so nasty. Now I hate those who go to work when sick. |

| There are some infections that you should stay home for but it's based more on your symptoms. For instance you can't really do anything productively anyway if you are feverish, constantly vomiting, or having diarrhea. There would be no point in going. On the other hand a simple head cold is not going to affect you much other than being really annoying. Regardless, I work around food so if you are sick they tell you GTFO and go home so you don't infect half the city. |

| I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed this. Anyway I think that they make it such a big deal to put a handicap on a certain character, give an episode a theme, have an excuse for that character to be taken care of by another character, or a reason to exclude a particular character for various reasons. Sometimes in anime when somebody gets sick, their love interest will come over and care for them. In a way, giving a character a cold could be a easy and efficient plot device to deepen their relationship with another person. |
