The problem with most of these mystery shows is that you will only know the answer after it is presented because concrete evidence is never shown until the mystery is revealed which is a pretty big design direction. It's whodunit. The challenge has always been on the viewers, they are supposed to solve the mystery themselves before the solution is revealed. Sufficient clues will be provided to aid you even though most of the times these can be very subtle. It doesn't work well if the solution requires in-depth scientific knowledge when you are not an expert in this given field. In some sense, this is akin to your typical IQ puzzle. I love it when the puzzles involves logical explanation on human psychology. The mind games. They may not be as deep and diverse as Thirty-Six Stratagems but it's always interesting to deduce the killer from his restrained/unnatural behaviours. |

Even though I personally have found numerous anime more thought provoking than anything my school has ever offered. I'd say there's quite a few insightful anime&manga out there. A lot(not all) of the ones I rated 10 are because I either learned or confirmed something(about people&life) from them. Just saiyan. |

I think one of the reasons the literature offered in school is no longer 'thought provoking' is because it's not from our generation. When something like The Awakening spout up, it sure did made some light bulbs flicker on. Nowadays, it doesn't really offer the same impact, for obvious reasons, as it no longer inspires us when it's a past issue society dealt with long ago. A more current medium, such as anime, can easily offer a great 'life lesson' because it's more 'in the now'; it's understandable why the stuff you read/watch in school makes you feel apathetic. |

| No more then any other medium I guess. That being said, like any other form of story telling they can give you different view points and perspectives to look at things, but it is ultimately what a person decides to take out of it. |

| Do I feel more intelligent? No, not really. Although any type of entertainment does have the potential to make you smarter. If you think about it enough, and are able to form your own opinions etc...then yeah of course it will naturally increase your cognitive ability. Although it really is no difference then going outside and looking at the grass and thinking about anything, really. Entertainment just gives you a medium to think about. |
| I learned to speak and write in English correctly because of anime. In just barely watching it, you always use your mind in understanding it genuinely, so your mind will not freeze for the time being. It also gives you additional information about something. Well, I'm fond in watching sports anime and in our physical education, it's very efficient. In watching anime, I learned a lot of Japanese words that I can use in many things, like, introducing myself and such. So I guess, it can really make you much more witty. |

| Watching anime makes you dumber, at least as long as you don't realize that all the views presented in anime are straw men of issues that are vastly more complicated in real life, and that you could probably count the number of philosophical archetypes in anime on 1 hand. Today I just finished the Devil Survivor anime, and at the end of it Hibiki says in the narrative some hypocritical shit like "we should let everyone contribute their will for the future of mankind instead of letting one person bear all the responsibility" -- you know, the kind of vacuous bullshit some kid might use to excuse himself from having to take responsibility... (It's hypocritical because by making this decision, Hibiki is forcing his idea of the future upon mankind because he was in the power to do so, regardless of what he thinks is right. Another high-five to our villain for being more consistent!) Anyways, what is my point? Hibiki's conclusion exactly the same conclusion as Akane from Psycho-Pass, which is very close to the conclusion of Shinsekai Yori, and probably a bunch of other anime: the idea that it is "wrong" to decide something for the future of human kind, or that "humanity" collectively shares the responsibility for their future... Anime philosophy is like a feel-good self-help book. If you go into it looking for real permanent knowledge, you're bound to feel fulfilled, but still come out empty. |

| I do think you can get more insightful/intelligent. It depends if you want to engulf yourself in what actually makes you smarter surrounding anime. You can have discussions, analyze things, question things etc. |

Right....You can read a book in a way where you just eat up the information without really understanding it not to mention analyzing it, in which case you gain nothing, but if at the end of doing so you start to think "wow I read a super smart book, I agree with it 100% (because it's a smart book), therefore I must be smart" you did yourself more harm than good, you have become dumber than you were. Edit: there are many people who read tons of books and think themselves to be smart because they can parrot the content of those books, while in fact by parroting they gained nothing, but thinking themselves smart they've limited themselves. |
