Hello good people of MLA:
Today I have decided to discuss the genre mix between Harrem and Comedy. Most Harrem have included in them comedy to lighten up the mood or attract more viewers. A good example of this mix, which I think makes a good anime is "IS Infinite Stratos". Infinite Stratos displays the moments of tension between the girls and the boys, but to lighten up the mood they need to input something fun, and this is where the comedy comes in. Now, this is not a discussion about series, but of opinion. What do you guys think of this mix in making an anime good? (There are other genre, and this is on it's own.) Please let me know and if you have negative opinions on this, don't be hesitate is post them.
If you want my honest opinion, harem anime in general sucks. IS: Infinite Stratos in particular is one of my most hated anime. It isn't because it was just a harem though, I didn't find the characters to be very likable and the chemistry of the harem just wasn't very good on the whole. Generally speaking, I didn't find the comedy to be all that funny. However, as it will be implied with my next paragraph, comedy is subjective. What one person finds to be hilarious, the next person might find to be stupid and poorly written.
With that being said, that doesn't mean all harem animes are bad. I think there are a few shining gems that do a nice job of mixing comedy with harem. My favorite example is Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi. The comedy was downright hilarious, the harem didn't have any forced romance between the MC and love interests, and all-in-all, it was a bittersweet story that mixed and matched the genres perfectly.
I think shounen and harem is a genre that CAN work but doesn't usually work either. For this example, I thought Campione did a pretty decent job of pulling it off. Of course, that series did implement comedy as well, but it was more about the shounen elements and the harem. |
