*Before starting this review/opinion, I would like to declare that these are my own ideas and opinions, opinions may differ, so please keep that in mind. Enjoy!*

Hello good people of MLA:
Today I have decided to discuss the genre mix between Harrem and Comedy. Most Harrem have included in them comedy to lighten up the mood or attract more viewers. A good example of this mix, which I think makes a good anime is "IS Infinite Stratos". Infinite Stratos displays the moments of tension between the girls and the boys, but to lighten up the mood they need to input something fun, and this is where the comedy comes in. Now, this is not a discussion about series, but of opinion. What do you guys think of this mix in making an anime good? (There are other genre, and this is on it's own.) Please let me know and if you have negative opinions on this, don't be hesitate is post them.

If you want my honest opinion, harem anime in general sucks. IS: Infinite Stratos in particular is one of my most hated anime. It isn't because it was just a harem though, I didn't find the characters to be very likable and the chemistry of the harem just wasn't very good on the whole. Generally speaking, I didn't find the comedy to be all that funny. However, as it will be implied with my next paragraph, comedy is subjective. What one person finds to be hilarious, the next person might find to be stupid and poorly written.

With that being said, that doesn't mean all harem animes are bad. I think there are a few shining gems that do a nice job of mixing comedy with harem. My favorite example is Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi. The comedy was downright hilarious, the harem didn't have any forced romance between the MC and love interests, and all-in-all, it was a bittersweet story that mixed and matched the genres perfectly.

I think shounen and harem is a genre that CAN work but doesn't usually work either. For this example, I thought Campione did a pretty decent job of pulling it off. Of course, that series did implement comedy as well, but it was more about the shounen elements and the harem.

In my opinion this is the worst kind of anime. Infinite Stratos reminded me of some 10 year old anime that was put on the shelf and the project revived by some kind of philanthropist that has a hand for bad investments. It had that old school ecchi feel that made Love Hina look like a masterpiece.

Well...I guess this is compared to harem+drama? Or are you saying playing sexual tension for laughs is better than being all serious about it? Well, it's fine when it works. Breaking the tension is for giving the viewers a breather and readies them for the next series of dramatic events. This is something that I really like about Key - awesome comedy followed by hard drama. With regards to harems though...There's a lot of harem/ecchi/comedies that rely a lot on fan service for their source of laughs, or maybe that's what it feels like nowadays. Rather than breaking any tension, it feels more like, for a lack of a better way to put it, straight up pandering. At least, I think that was the question...

But yeah, when it works it works, and when it doesn't, it becomes another scapegoat of the "anime sucks now" crowd.

It depend in the individual anime. Some can funny and some can anoying. Also depend of the story. If it take to seriously sometimes it will have a backward effect.
Kickstarter for Rokujouma is fully funded. Good work everyone. Lets wait for the result of our hard work together.

I'd say they're good about 40% of the time and aren't the remaining 60%. It depends on if the main character actually picks somebody or not.

Depends, I found some to be good, and some to be bad. Generally because they are too short to allow characters to develop and the stories feel rushed, due to having to introduce each new girl an episode a time. And they are usually forgotten and left in the background as extras due to the studio's choosing to go for the normal ending, rather then the Harem ending. Infinite Stratos is the obvious example alot of people have pointed out since the main character went for the childhood friend over (I think was the public favourite) Charlotte.

I found Hayate no Gotoku (Technically is a Harem and comedy) To be quite enjoyable, and the manga is still on going and decent. Not focus on just romantic entanglements so it was good.

Airantou is also another I enjoy, Even though through out the show there was only one male character, It was still enjoyable, Because the Island itself was interesting, including the creatures such as the chute mini ball like sheep.

Ranma is technically a harem, since he has 3 fiancee's (though according to the show he supposedly had probably thousands due to Genma his father, making promises for food.) But its comedy and martial art aspects put it in a different league, plus character development over the course of 161 episodes, plus ova's and 2 movies.

All in all, I reckon Harem Comedies need to be longer, Slice of life is good, but it needs to be extremely different on the setting and scenario, And a decent length as well to allow character development to take place.

In my opinion some are quite enjoyable and don't even start off as a harem but just a love triangle at max. But after more and more characters are added to the harem it usually just gets annoying. One good example for a decent harem imo is Nisekoi, though its anime adaption will be aired in the future, which also starts off as a "complicated love" triangle.

I just enjoy its comedy and art, not exaclty the harem part, it's not even close to my favourites. Though I read mangas most of the time anyways. There are just way better rom/coms to be found in mangas such as Taiyou no Ie.

It depends on its humor. Harem genre doesn't really matter to me.

I liked rosario vampire and kampfer, they were really good.

I'm not a fan of romance.. so... Yeah, putting comedy in these kind of things is a really good idea lol
sexual incest in nisomonogatari - no one bats an eye
romance incest in SAO - everyone loses their minds

It can be good, but I'm not a big fan of neither comedy nor romance/harem genres, so it's no for me.
The only thing you can rely on is that you can't rely on anything.
